backup band on a Canadian Forces-sponsored show tour.Involving Canadian singers, dancers, comics, musicians

and technicians in a contemporary style, the shows are

presented in the same vein as in the old Bob Hope USOtours. Shows o this nature require much hard work, a lot

o logistics preparation and a lot o travel on various Armed

Forces aircrat including helicopters. The visible morale-boosting aect that these shows have on our soldiers

makes the entire eort unquestionably worthwhile. It is

one way o showing our CF personnel there that they arecared about by the people back home. Don and Dave are

Ater interviewing this onths eturedrtist, I ound ysel unble to sto think-ing nd tlking bout the unique, vibrntintings Lorrine Mrie English is cret-

ing t her kitchen tble in her sll rt-ent in Perth. Te crylic cnvses glowwith lie. Tey re unlike nything I hveencountered in y st twelve yers owriting bout locl rtists.

As described by Gllery Perth in our Jnu-ry edition, Perths own Lorrine English, whois drwn to rich colours, uses hevy lictiono light nd drk to crete jewel-like deictions otrees, owers nd nils. Tere is glowing byz-ntine qulity to her work tht brings to ind theosics o Mogul lces nd the recision o In-din initures the colours shrly dened nds recisely lced s stone in its setting.

It ws Lorrine Mries inting o Cndincorneld tht colesced the colicted ires-sions tht her work de on e. I loved it s soons I sw it. But I wsnt sure why. Lvishly decort-ed sunowers boldly coete with golden ers ocorn ginst n zure nd cyn sky, ll drticllyred by n elbortely tterned, ulti-hued bor-der. Tere re thousnds o dots o brillint, etlliccolour outlining leves nd eticulously drwn bor-der tterns. It took e hours o reserch into EstIndin rt beore it nlly dwned on e wht wsgenerting the esthetic rush I ws exeriencing.

In her own serch or identity, Lorrine Mriehs develoed n originl rtistic voice. Quite un-intentionlly she hs creted new lnguge orexressing her convoluted nd conicted eelings

Lorraine Marie English An Artistic Triumph

bout being n Est Indin/British iigrnt inrurl Cnd.

Four yers go when she ws orced to sto workbecuse o debilitting helth issues, Lorrine re-

turned to her childhood interest in rts nd crtsto ll her tie nd rise her sirits. She set outwith her cer to hotogrh tyiclly Cndi-n scenes, bought book on inting, urchsedcrylic rt sulies, nd st down to work. Te re-sults did not stisy her.

She begn exerienting, striving or whisi-cl interrettions o things tht re lredy beu-tiul. Soon her works grew incresingly elborte,nd she introduced ore nd ore intricte deco-rtion. Te result is strikingly originl juxtosi-tion o brod Indin culturl inuences inoringn cquired Cndin lte. Te whole is greterthn the su o its rts.

Overcoming Adversityby Celebrating DiversityIt hs been reveling nd heling journey. Lor-

rine Mrie nd her ily oved to Montrelro Englnd when she ws twelve yers old. It wsn incredibly dicult trnsition or her nd heryounger brother. Moving to Crleton Plce llevi-ted the lnguge diculties, but the torent shesuered or being dierent is ieditely evidenton her ce when she begins to recount her unh-iness s victi o rejudice. Tirty-ve yerslter she begn grdully cceting nd even e-brcing her culturl inheritnce through her rt.

It is n excetionlly rich culture ro which todrw. Tis quote ro is helul: Indin Art is the visul rt roduced onthe Indin subcontinent ro bout the 3rd illen-niu BC to odern ties. o viewers schooled inthe Western trdition, Indin rt y see overlyornte nd sensuous; recition o its reneentcoes only grdully, s rule. Volutuous eeling

is given unusully ree exression in Indin culture.A strong sense o design is lso chrcteristic o In-din rt nd cn be observed in its odern s wells in its trditionl ors.

It took e no tie to recite Lorrine M-ries rt, nd others re shring y enthusis.Recently won who hd bought two works tGllery Perth clled to tell her how delighted shews with her urchses; the next dy the Glleryclled to tell Lorrine the won hd urchsedtwo ore. She condes tht she is still surrisedtht t show in 2009 t Brush Strokes in CrletonPlce, ll o sudden I ws big success!

It is not surprising. A Canadian sensibility lavishlyembellished with an Indian aesthetic is a brilliant andwelcome addition to our sometimes restrained artis-

tic landscape. Lorraine Maries canvases combine an assured decorativehand with an underlying spontaneity. Like the Indian Miniaturist paint-ers, she represents the real as (s)he has realised it, a thing not as it hasbeen but as it has been perceived, that is, a reality re-cast, or re-modeledrst by perception and then by art treatment.

Her rt celebrtes her love o nture nd beuty, nd her revi-ously unconscious nd unexressed connection to her Est Indinroots. rditionl subjects like Indis ntionl bird, the ecock, ndthe elehnt, recur in her intings. Mny re lvishly, eticulouslydorned with borders nd outlines nd decortions executed in ge-

like colours. Soe re executed so nely they reind e o Crewel-work; others suggest bedwork.

Lorrine Mrie describes hersel s quiet nd hving soewhthidden ersonlity. Pinting gives e wy o exressing yselboldly, nd hs brought to e condence tht I did not hve. It hsreveled soe broken lces in e nd hs been joy to y hert.By ebrcing her culturl roots she nds she is heling the woundsshe exerienced nd disowned long go.

Although her helth constrins her outut, she hs coitted tobe the etured rtist t Brush Strokes in June, 2013. In the entie, soe o her work is vilble there t 129 Bridge Street in Crleton Plce(2538088, brushstrokesrt.c). Its tie to ln tri to your locl sugr bush! With ll the wrwether this winter, sring y coe erly. Historicl records o syr-u king in Lnrk County indicte tht the syru seson usullystrted in lte Mrch or erly Aril. Te seson sees, on verge,

Every yer we hve new visitors t our sugr c who re notilir with the rocess o king le syru. Te ost re-quently sked question is: Do you hve to ut new hole in thetree ech yer? Te nswer is yes. Te t hole begins to hel ssoon s it is de nd, in the course o our or ve weeks, the treeno longer runs s ro it. Te run cn be extended by re-drillingthe t hole. You cn see the heling rocess t work on brokenbrnch. Te s runs ro the brnch on the rst wr dy butquickly stos due to buildu o bcteri on the exosed wood. Iguess the word t ilies, to the novice, tht we cn turn it onnd o. I wish we could.

Te second question is : Is tht s? It looks like wter. Since -le syru is golden brown in colour, ost eole exect coloureds. It is the boiling rocess tht cretes the colour in le syru.

Another question oten sked is: How do you know which treesre le trees? I tell the its esy the les re the ones with

buckets or tubing. But then I ention the le le on the Cnding nd the sreding nture o le brnches. Its not lwys esyto sot the les without their leves. I still being reinded oy istkes in ting n ok, bsswood nd butternut, think-ing they were les. At the end o long dy in the sugr bush,ll the trunks begin to look very siilr nd you hve to look u tthe brnches to be sure o the secies. Most syru kers hve lsoted trees whose tos hve broken o esy to do i you dontlook u t the to.

Visitors see our big s storge tnks nd envision tnker truck-lods o syru, so they sk: How uch syru do you ke? Ourin tnk holds 8000 litres o s, which t rtio o 40/1 will ro-duce bout 200 litres o syru. Tis gives visitors n ide o the workrequired to ke even sll quntity o syru. And nlly Which syru is best? I cnnot nswer this ques-tion. Everyone hs tste reerence. Flvour will vry ro dyto dy during the seson.
