The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra (FWSO) announces its 2014-‐2015 concert season, celebrating fifteen years under Music Director Miguel Harth-‐Bedoya and highlighting the Maestro’s favorite symphonic masterworks as well as world-‐renowned soloists, conductors, and some of the best performers in pops show business.

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS
• MAESTRO’S FAVORITE MASTERWORKS: For the 2014-‐2015 season, each symphonic program will feature one symphonic masterwork that is a personal and professional favorite of the Music Director.
• COMPOSER-‐IN-‐RESIDENCE PROGRAM: This critically-‐acclaimed program expands in
2014-‐2015 to feature not one but THREE of this century’s most innovative and gifted composers -‐ London-‐born Anna Clyne, Pulitzer Prize winner Jennifer Higdon, and Adam Schoenberg, winner of ASCAP’s Morton Gould Young Composer Award.
• NEW ARTIST-‐IN-‐RESIDENCE PROGRAM: The FWSO proudly introduces a new three-‐year Artist-‐in-‐Residence partnership with 2013 Cliburn gold medalist Vadym Kholodenko featuring the full cycle of Prokofiev piano concertos. Kholodenko appears twice at Bass Hall this season, and a chamber music performance at the new Renzo Piano Pavilion will be announced soon.
• 15 WORKS FOR 15 YEARS: In recognition of the Maestro’s fifteen years with the FWSO symphony patrons will experience 15 great compositions – from Rachmaninoff to Ravel – that have not been performed by the FWSO at Bass Hall for 15 years.
• BEST OF POPS: Audiences will hear some of the best in show business, with Pops performers like Kenny G, Megan Hilty, Sara Evans, and The von Trapps. Crowd-‐pleasing favorites like Star Wars & Beyond: The Music of John Williams, Cirque de la Symphonie, and our famous Swingin’ New Year’s Eve make their return to complete the talent-‐filled season.
• PIANO SUPERSTAR: Fresh from a daring Grammy Awards performance with legendary rock group Metallica, piano superstar Lang Lang makes his first appearance with the FWSO in Bass Performance Hall for an unforgettable Gala concert event.
• GREAT PERFORMANCES FESTIVAL: The latest edition of the FWSO’s popular August music festival features the strong collaborative friendship between composers Johannes Brahms and Antonin Dvořák. Fort Worth favorite Augustin Hadelich returns to perform the Brahms Violin Concerto in D Major and the Dvořák Violin Concerto in A Minor, while mezzo-‐soprano Zandra McMaster makes her FWSO debut with Dvořák’s Biblical Songs, Op. 99.
• STUDENT PASSPORT: Now in its second year, the Student Passport program, offering high-‐school and college-‐age students twelve months of symphonic music for only $35, continues to create new younger audiences for FWSO performances.
FWSO’S 2014-‐2015 American Airlines Symphonic Season is a musical exploration of classical favorites, new works, and repertoire significant to Music Director Miguel Harth-‐Bedoya’s career as a musician and conductor. Major highlights of the symphonic season include Beethoven’s Triple Concerto in C Major, Barber’s magnetic Violin Concerto, Lalo’s Cello Concerto in D Minor, Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, and Korngold’s Violin Concerto in D Major. The list continues with Prokofiev’s Piano Concertos No. 2 and 5 with new FWSO Artist-‐In-‐Residence 2013 Cliburn Gold Medalist Vadym Kholodenko. The FWSO continues its commitment to new music with selections from all three 2014-‐2015 Composers-‐In-‐Residence, beginning with British composer Anna Clyne’s <<Rewind<<, Jennifer Higdon’s Grammy winning Percussion Concerto, and Adam Schoenberg’s hope-‐filled American Symphony. Along with returning favorites like percussionist Colin Currie, violinist Augustin Hadelich and pianist Barry Douglas, the FWSO also presents new guest artists like violinists Simone Porter and Stefan Jackiw, conductor Carlos Kalmar, pianists Simone Dinnerstein, Vadym Kholodenko, and Katia Skanavi, and mezzo-‐soprano Zandra McMaster.
Highlights of the FWSO’s 2014-‐2015 Star-‐Telegram Pops Series include the symphony’s beloved Star Wars & Beyond: A John Williams Adventure (Sept. 5-‐7, 2014), star of NBC’s television hit Smash Megan Hilty in a Frank Sinatra tribute (Oct. 10-‐12, 2014), and a live orchestra performance accompanying some of the film-‐maker’s most suspenseful moments with Hitchcock! (Nov. 7-‐9, 2014). The FWSO’s family-‐favorite concert Home For The Holidays (Nov. 29-‐30, 2014), superstar Kenny G live with orchestra (Jan. 23-‐25, 2015), Cathie Ryan’s Celtic Magic celebration of St. Patrick’s Day (Mar. 13-‐15, 2015) and the long-‐anticipated return of breathtaking acrobatics and music with Cirque de la Symphonie round out the Pops series (April 10-‐12, 2015). Special Events of the 2014-‐2015 season open with country music star Sara Evans making her first appearance in Bass Hall (Sept. 27, 2014), and holiday offerings like Handel’s Messiah (Dec. 2, 2014) and Von Trapp Family Christmas (Dec. 4, 2014), returning after a sold-‐out holiday show in 2011. The FWSO rings in 2015 with the hottest big band standards of Swingin’ New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31, 2013), and presents extraordinary piano virtuoso Lang Lang in a spectacular Bass Performance Hall Gala debut (Feb. 28, 2015)

ABOUT THE CONCERTS All Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra regular season concerts take place at Bass Performance Hall in newly-‐renovated Sundance Square in downtown Fort Worth unless otherwise noted. Subscriptions for the 2014-‐2015 season go on sale Friday, March 7, 2014. FREE parking in 777 Main Parking Garage is available to all FWSO patrons on the night/day of their selected performance. Beethoven’s Triple Concerto September 12-‐14, 2014 Miguel Harth-‐Bedoya, Conductor Michael Shih, Violin Claudio Bohorquez, Cello Katia Skanavi, Piano The 2014-‐2015 Symphonic season opens with the fresh and forceful sounds of new FWSO Composer-‐in-‐Residence Anna Clyne, followed by Beethoven’s sweeping Triple Concerto in C Major. Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony closes the first symphonic program.

Beethoven & Ravel October 3-‐5, 2014 Carlos Kalmar, Guest Conductor Simone Dinnerstein, Piano With five solo albums topping the classical charts, American pianist Simone Dinnerstein makes her Fort Worth debut with Beethoven’s famous “Emperor” concerto. We feature an all-‐French second half, including Maestro Miguel’s favorite, Ravel’s rapturous La valse. Programming:

Cliburn Gold October 24-‐26, 2014 Miguel Harth-‐Bedoya, Conductor Vadym Kholodenko, Piano The FWSO proudly launches a new artistic partnership with 2013 Cliburn Gold Medalist Vadym Kholodenko in a two-‐year commitment to performing all five Prokofiev piano concertos. The formidable Piano Concerto No. 2 in G Minor is paired in this program with Verdi’s majestic overture to Nabucco and Brahms’ joyful Symphony No. 2 in D Major. Programming:

American Ballads November 14-‐16, 2014 Andrés Franco, Guest Conductor Simone Porter, Violin In an all-‐American first half, violin prodigy Simone Porter makes her Fort Worth debut with Samuel Barber’s lyrical Violin Concerto, following Copland’s Shaker-‐melody filled ballet suite Appalachian Spring. Resisting peer pressure to compose a nationalistic paean to Stalin and Red Russia, Shostakovich’s exuberant neo-‐classical Ninth symphony has become one of his most accessible and loved works.

Grammy-‐Winning Percussion January 9-‐11, 2014 Miguel Harth-‐Bedoya, Conductor Colin Currie, Percussion Pulitzer Prize winner and returning FWSO Composer-‐in-‐Residence Jennifer Higdon makes a welcome appearance in the symphonic line-‐up when percussionist Collin Currie performs her Grammy-‐winning Percussion Concerto. Rachmaninoff’s monumental Symphony No. 2 travels from turmoil to triumph, closing the concert with a blazing fanfare. Programming:

Lalo & Schumann January 30-‐February 1, 2015 Miguel Harth-‐Bedoya, Conductor Adolfo Gutiérrez Arenas, Cello Spanish cellist Adolfo Gutiérrez Arenas makes his Fort Worth debut with Lalo’s rarely-‐performed Cello Concerto, followed by Schumann’s massive Symphony No. 2 with its stunning slow movement and gestures to Beethoven’s influence. Love & Prokofiev February 13-‐15, 2015 Miguel Harth-‐Bedoya, Conductor Pablo Sáinz Villegas, Guitar From the escapades and flirtatious tunes of Die Fledermaus to the sweeping melodies of Rodrigo’s 1939 guitar concerto and Prokofiev’s ballet suite based on the tragic Shakespearean love story, the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra performs the music of romance.

Korngold & Dvořák March 6-‐8, 2015 Eugene Tzigane, Conductor Stefan Jackiw, Violin Best known for his Hollywood film scores, in later in life Erich Korngold turned to concert music such as the gorgeously melodic Violin Concerto. You’ll also hear Dvořák’s loving celebration of his Czech homeland and culture with his Symphony No. 7 in D Minor. Programming:

Two Mighty Fifths March 20-‐22, 2015 Miguel Harth-‐Bedoya, Conductor Vadym Kholodenko, Piano 2013 Cliburn Gold Medalist Vadym Kholodenko makes his second appearance of the season to perform Prokofiev’s boisterous final piano concerto. The FWSO opens the concert with Richard Strauss’ virtuosic tone poem, Don Juan, and closes with Beethoven’s awe-‐inspiring Fifth symphony, whose opening motif is now engrained in pop culture. Revueltas & Rachmaninoff May 15-‐17, 2015 Miguel Harth-‐Bedoya, Conductor Barry Douglas, Piano Energized by the 2008 elections, FWSO Composer-‐in-‐Residence Adam Schoenberg describes his American Symphony as an homage to our past and a forward look to a brighter future. His Copland-‐inspired work is followed by Rachmaninoff’s turbulent Piano Concerto No. 2, featuring legendary Irish pianist Barry Douglas. Described as a Mexican Rite of Spring, the ritualistic La noche de los mayas concludes the concert in a frenzy of percussion.
