THECONNECTION July 2, 2020 Issue 53 ONE HEALTH By Vice President of Communications, Tom Varitek Every person and animal deserve my best self, my best service and my best care. For those of you who have been through our service training or orientation since October, those words should be familiar. They represent our commitment to service. It’s an aspirational statement that recognizes that people are partners in our mission to improve the lives of animals. It recognizes that the human-animal bond is a cornerstone to who we are. This commitment also mentions “every” animal. I am proud of this organization’s decades-long commitment to providing food, supplies and veterinary care to families who need them. COVID-19 has led to a gap in some of those services. Spay and neuter was suspended, and the ability to gather hundreds of people and pets at our Protect-a-Pet shot clinics has become impossible. But still, the need is there. One Health is a new program championed by Doug Plant and supported by many of you. It aims to fill this gap in preventative health services and to meet the needs of many people and pets in our community. One Health is a funded program focused on providing spay/neuter, microchips and preventative care to pet owners in need. One Health will also partner with United Way and other organizations to provide access to health and human services! MHS will partner with All About Animals to provide preventative vet services to 2,500 total animals! Dates of Event: Aug. 15, 16, 22, 23, 29, 30, by appointment! This means that the clinics will be closed to other appointments to focus on One Health. Locations: MHS Facilities at Detroit, Westland, Rochester Hills (and All About Animals in Warren) Partners: United Way of Southeast Michigan, Banfield Foundation, Zoetis among others. I heard someone say recently that “our pets are only as healthy as the communities in which they live.” One Health is a response to the current needs of the community and its animals. To me, it fits perfectly with our commitment to service, because every person and animal deserve my be service, my best self and my best care.

Every person and animal deserve my best self, my best service and my best care. ONE PRIDE MICHIGAN HUMANE MUTT MARCH TEAMBy Director of Special Events, Becky Hanel

We wanted to provide an update on our daily health screening process. As you’re likely aware, our current process includes three screening questions related to symptoms, exposure to another person who has tested positive for COVID19, and travel outside of Michigan. Effective tomorrow, we will be updating our travel question to reflect international travel or domestic travel via airplane only. Therefore, a 14-day quarantine period will no longer be required following domestic travel, if you did not travel via airplane. If you are considering domestic travel, we ask that you follow CDC guidelines to keep yourself and others safe - https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/travel-in-the-us.html.

Managers, you’ll see that our existing health screening forms have been updated to reflect this new language. No additional action is needed on your end.

Thank you all for participating in this process, and keeping one another safe. Our staff’s health and safety continue to be a top priority, and we’ll keep you updated on any future changes.

Has your pet taken over your camera roll during quarantine? Well, now is your chance to show off your photography skills while helping to change the lives of homeless animals by entering your favorite pet photo in the 2020 Michigan Humane Pet Photo Contest.

Now through July 26, you can visit michiganhumane.org/photocontest to enter the contest. Contest participants can email friends and family to support their campaign by voting with a donation; each dollar will represent one vote. When the contest ends, the top entries on the leaderboard – those with the most votes by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, July 26, 2020 – will win a spot in the MHS 2021 calendar!
