10¶ On the seventh day, when the heart of the king wasmerry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Har-bona, Bigtha, and Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas, the sevenchamberlains that served in the presence of Ahasuerusthe king,†† 11 To bring Vashti the queen before the kingwith the crown royal, to shew the people and the princesher beauty: for she was fair to look on.‡‡ 12But the queenVashti refused to come at the king’s commandment by hischamberlains: therefore was the king very wroth, and hisanger burned in him.§§

Thus shall there arisetoo much contempt and wrath. 19 If it please the king, letthere go a royal commandment from him, and let it bewritten among the laws of the Persians and the Medes,that it be not altered, That Vashti come no more beforekingAhasuerus; and let the king give her royal estate untoanother that is better than she.†††‡‡‡§§§* 20 And whenthe king’s decree which he shall make shall be publishedthroughout all his empire, (for it is great,) all the wivesshall give to their husbands honour, both to great andsmall. 21And the saying pleased

the king and the princes; and the king did accordingto the word of Memucan:† 22 For he sent letters into allthe king’s provinces, into every province according to thewriting thereof, and to every people after their language,that every man should bear rule in his own house, andthat it should be published according to the language ofevery people.‡

21After these things, when the wrath of king Ahasuerus

was appeased, he remembered Vashti, and what she haddone, and what was decreed against her. 2 Then said theking’s servants that ministered unto him, Let there befair young virgins sought for the king: 3 And let the kingappoint officers in all the provinces of his kingdom, thatthey may gather together all the fair young virgins unto††† 1.19 If it…: Heb. of the women; and let their things for purification begiven them:*† 4 And let the maiden which pleaseth theking be queen instead of Vashti. And the thing pleasedthe king; and he did so.

5 ¶ Now in Shushan the palace there was a certain Jew,whose name was Mordecai, the son of Jair, the son ofShimei, the son of Kish, a Benjamite; 6 Who had beencarried away from Jerusalemwith the captivitywhichhadbeen carried away with Jeconiah king of Judah, whomNebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away.‡7 And he brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle’sdaughter: for she had neither father nor mother, andthe maid was fair and beautiful; whom Mordecai, whenher father and mother were dead, took for his owndaughter.§**

8 ¶ So it came to pass, when the king’s commandmentand his decree was heard, and when many maidens weregathered together unto Shushan the palace, to the cus-tody ofHegai, that Estherwas brought also unto the king’shouse, to the custody of Hegai, keeper of the women.9And the maiden pleased

12 ¶ Now when every maid’s turn was come to go in toking Ahasuerus, after that she had been twelve months,according to the manner of the women, (for so werethe days of their purifications accomplished, to wit, sixmonths with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweetodours, and with other things for the purifying of thewomen;) 13 Then thus came every maiden unto the king;whatsoever she desired was given her to go with her outof the house of the women unto the king’s house. 14 Inthe evening she went, and on the morrow she returnedinto the second house of the women, to the custodyof Shaashgaz, the king’s chamberlain, which kept theconcubines: she came in unto the king no more, exceptthe king delighted in her, and that she were called byname.

15 ¶ Now when the turn of Esther, the daughter ofAbihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her forhis daughter, was come to go in unto the king, sherequired nothing but what Hegai the king’s chamberlain,the keeper of thewomen, appointed. 21¶ In those days, whileMordecai sat in the king’s gate,two of the king’s chamberlains, Bigthan and Teresh, ofthose which kept the door, were wroth, and sought to layhand on the king Ahasuerus.§§§* 22 And the thing wasknown to Mordecai, who told it unto Esther the queen;and Esther certified the king thereof in Mordecai’s name.23 And when inquisition was made of the matter, it wasfound out; therefore they were both hanged on a tree:and it was written in the book of the chronicles beforethe king.

31 After these things did king Ahasuerus promote

Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, and ad-vancedhim, and set his seat above all the princes thatwerewith him. 2 And all the king’s servants, that were in theking’s gate, bowed, and reverenced Haman: for the kinghad so commanded concerning him. Esther 3:4 7 Esther 3:12transgressest thou the king’s commandment? 4 Now itcame to pass, when they spake daily unto him, and hehearkened not unto them, that they told Haman, to seewhether Mordecai’s matters would stand: for he had toldthem that he was a Jew. 5 And when Haman saw thatMordecai bowed not, nor did him reverence, then wasHaman full of wrath. 6 And he thought scorn to layhands on Mordecai alone; for they had shewed him thepeople of Mordecai: wherefore Haman sought to destroyall the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom ofAhasuerus, even the people of Mordecai.

7 ¶ In the first month, that is, the month Nisan, in thetwelfth year of king Ahasuerus, they cast Pur, that is, thelot, before Haman from day to day, and from month tomonth, to the twelfth month, that is, the month Adar.

8 ¶ And Haman said unto king Ahasuerus, There is acertain people scattered abroad and dispersed among thepeople in all the provinces of thy kingdom; and their lawsare diverse from all people; neither keep they the king’slaws: therefore it is not for the king’s profit to sufferthem.* 9 If it please the king, let it be written that theymay be destroyed: and I will pay ten thousand talents ofsilver to the hands of those that have the charge of thebusiness, to bring it into the king’s treasuries.†‡ 10 Andthe king took his ring from his hand, and gave it untoHaman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the Jews’enemy.§ 11 And the king said unto Haman, The silveris given to thee, the people also, to do with them as itseemeth good to thee. 12 Then were the king’s scribes

manded unto the king’s lieutenants, and to the governorsthat were over every province, and to the rulers of everypeople of every province according to thewriting thereof,and to every people after their language; in the nameof king Ahasuerus was it written, and sealed with theking’s ring.** 13 And the letters were sent by posts intoall the king’s provinces, to destroy, to kill, and to causeto perish, all Jews, both young and old, little childrenand women, in one day, even upon the thirteenth dayof the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, and totake the spoil of them for a prey. 14 The copy of thewriting for a commandment to be given in every provincewas published unto all people, that they should be readyagainst that day. 15 The posts went out, being hastenedby the king’s commandment, and the decree was given inShushan the palace. And the king and Haman sat down todrink; but the city Shushan was perplexed.

41WhenMordecai perceived all thatwas done, Mordecai

rent his clothes, and put on sackcloth with ashes, andwent out into the midst of the city, and cried with a loudand a bitter cry; 2 And came even before the king’s gate:for none might enter into the king’s gate clothed withsackcloth. 3 And in every province, whithersoever theking’s commandment andhis decree came, therewas greatmourning among the Jews, and fasting, and weeping, andwailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.*

5 Then called Esther for Hatach, one of the king’schamberlains, whom he had appointed to attend uponher, and gave him a commandment to Mordecai, to knowwhat it was, and why it was.‡ 6 So Hatach went forth toMordecai unto the street of the city, which was beforethe king’s gate. 7 And Mordecai told him of all that hadhappened unto him, and of the sum of the money thatHaman had promised to pay to the king’s treasuries forthe Jews, to destroy them. 8 Also he gave him the copyof the writing of the decree that was given at Shushanto destroy them, to shew it unto Esther, and to declare itunto her, and to charge her that she should go in unto theking, tomake supplication unto him, and tomake requestbefore him for her people. 9 And Hatach came and toldEsther the words of Mordecai.

10 ¶ Again Esther spake unto Hatach, and gave himcommandment unto Mordecai; 11 All the king’s servants,and the people of the king’s provinces, do know, thatwhosoever, whether man or woman, shall come unto theking into the inner court, who is not called, there is onelaw of his to put him to death, except such to whom theking shall hold out the golden sceptre, that he may live:but I have not been called to come in unto the king thesethirty days. 12 And they told to Mordecai Esther’s words.13 Then Mordecai commanded to answer Esther, Thinknotwith thyself that thou shalt escape in the king’s house,more than all the Jews. 14 For if thou altogether holdestthy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement anddeliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but† 4.4 chamberlains: Heb. eunuchs ‡ 4.5 appointed…: Heb. set beforeher

15¶ Then Esther bade them returnMordecai this answer,16 Go, gather together all the Jews that are present inShushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drinkthree days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fastlikewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is notaccording to the law: and if I perish, I perish.** 17 SoMordecai went his way, and did according to all thatEsther had commanded him.††

51 Now it came to pass on the third day, that Esther

put on her royal apparel, and stood in the inner court ofthe king’s house, over against the king’s house: and theking sat upon his royal throne in the royal house, overagainst the gate of the house. 2 And it was so, when theking saw Esther the queen standing in the court, that sheobtained favour in his sight: and the king held out toEsther the golden sceptre that was in his hand. So Estherdrew near, and touched the top of the sceptre. 3 Thensaid the king unto her, What wilt thou, queen Esther?and what is thy request? it shall be even given thee tothe half of the kingdom. 4And Esther answered, If it seemgood unto the king, let the king and Haman come this dayunto the banquet that I have prepared for him. 5 Thenthe king said, Cause Haman to make haste, that he maydo as Esther hath said. What is thy petition? and it shall be granted thee: andwhat is thy request? even to the half of the kingdom itshall be performed. 7 Then answered Esther, and said,My petition and my request is; 8 If I have found favourin the sight of the king, and if it please the king to grantmy petition, and to perform my request, let the king andHaman come to the banquet that I shall prepare for them,and I will do to morrow as the king hath said.*

9 ¶ Then went Haman forth that day joyful and with aglad heart: but when Haman saw Mordecai in the king’sgate, that he stood not up, nor moved for him, he was fullof indignation against Mordecai. 10 Nevertheless Hamanrefrained himself: and when he came home, he sentand called for his friends, and Zeresh his wife.† 11 AndHaman told them of the glory of his riches, and themultitude of his children, and all the things wherein theking had promoted him, and how he had advanced himabove the princes and servants of the king. 12Haman saidmoreover, Yea, Esther the queen did let no man come inwith the king unto the banquet that she had prepared butmyself; and tomorrow am I invited unto her also with theking. 13 Yet all this availeth me nothing, so long as I seeMordecai the Jew sitting at the king’s gate.

14 ¶ Then said Zeresh his wife and all his friends untohim, Let a gallows be made of fifty cubits high, and tomorrow speak thou unto the king that Mordecai may behanged thereon: then go thou in merrily with the kingunto the banquet. And the thing pleased Haman; and hecaused the gallows to be made.‡

1 On that night could not the king sleep, and he com-manded to bring the book of records of the chronicles;and they were read before the king.* 2 And it was foundwritten, that Mordecai had told of Bigthana and Teresh,two of the king’s chamberlains, the keepers of the door,who sought to lay hand on the king Ahasuerus.†‡ 3 Andthe king said, What honour and dignity hath been doneto Mordecai for this? Then said the king’s servants thatministered unto him, There is nothing done for him.

4¶ And the king said, Who is in the court? Now Hamanwas come into the outward court of the king’s house, tospeak unto the king to hangMordecai on the gallows thathe had prepared for him. 5 And the king’s servants saidunto him, Behold, Haman standeth in the court. Andthe king said, Let him come in. 6 So Haman came in.And the king said unto him, What shall be done unto theman whom the king delighteth to honour? Now Hamanthought in his heart, To whom would the king delight todo honour more than to myself?§ 7And Haman answeredthe king, For the man whom the king delighteth

Esther 6:10 13 Esther 7:3bring him on horseback through the street of the city,and proclaim before him, Thus shall it be done to theman whom the king delighteth to honour.§§ 10 Then theking said to Haman, Make haste, and take the apparel andthe horse, as thou hast said, and do even so to Mordecaithe Jew, that sitteth at the king’s gate: let nothing failof all that thou hast spoken.*** 11 Then took Hamanthe apparel and the horse, and arrayed Mordecai, andbrought him on horseback through the street of the city,and proclaimed before him, Thus shall it be done unto theman whom the king delighteth

to honour.12 ¶ And Mordecai came again to the king’s gate. But

Haman hasted to his house mourning, and having hishead covered. 13 And Haman told Zeresh his wife and allhis friends every thing that had befallen him. Then saidhis wise men and Zeresh his wife unto him, If Mordecaibe of the seed of the Jews, before whom thou hast begunto fall, thou shalt not prevail against him, but shalt surelyfall before him. 14 And while they were yet talking withhim, came the king’s chamberlains, and hasted to bringHaman unto the banquet that Esther had prepared.
