BUILD SITE UPDATE:

From a second fl oor, to ceiling joists, windows and doors, the Burnaby build site has seen signifi cant progress in the last six months. Th anks to the Roofi ng Contractors Association of BC who generously donated their labour and materials, we were able to ensure that the roof was completed prior to the winter storms. Focus has now moved inside where drywall preparation is taking place and members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers are roughing in the wiring for each home. Before we know it, these units will be ready for their fi rst coat of paint!Th e completion of this phase is projected for late fall of this year. Th is means fi ve of our partner families will experience their fi rst holiday season as homeowners in 2010, bringing our total number of families helped to 21. Th ese families worked very hard to complete their required 500 sweat equity hours to get to this point. Th is task could not be accomplished without our generous donors and sponsors. We sincerely appreciate all of the support we have received to make this phase, and previous phases a reality. Stay tuned in the coming months for your invitation to our next home dedication.

What ‘Home’ Means to MeA house is a place built of bricks and stone,

But a home is a place where memories roam.Houses are something you build and buy,

Where homes are things that have experienced time. When I think of home I think of my family,

Sitting together and chatting happily.Remembering holidays that have passed over the years,I realize home is the place I belong, which is right here.

Forever and always it remains a special place,But I know it’s much more, home is something we can’t replace.

It makes me feel happy and content inside,When I think of when I laughed or even when I cried.

Home is a place where I’ve had lots of fun,It’s the place where my very life has begun!

Home means a lot of things, and some I can’t even think of,But in the long run, the real meaning of home is

a little thing called love.

I’m sitting on the street, with no place to go,Looking down the block, with an expression of woe.

Expressing the emotions, right on my face,Of how I’m feeling about the life I don’t bother to embrace.

Homeless on the sidewalk, sitting all alone. My name, and history, remaining unknown.

Needing a home so badly I might cry,Watching the luckier people passing by.

Sad and lonely, unfortunate and confused,Pedestrians at the bus stop seem amused.

I don’t have a job, friends, or money,But this is the thing that really bugs me.

I don’t have a place to call my own,To relax and sit back, where the real me can be shown.

Th at special abode where my feelings are safe,Where I can feel comfortable, with a smile on my face.

I don’t care if it’s a cube, a pyramid, or a dome,But the thing I need most is called a home.

Th e winners of Genworth Financial Canada’s Meaning of Home Contest were announced in early February. Students in grades 4-6 from across Canada submitted their thoughts on what home means to them through stories, essays or poetry. From those many entries, 24 fi nalists were selected with 4 of them being from BC!

Congratulations to Lauren Friesen of Surrey for being selected as a fi nalist in this contest thanks to her poem submission titled What ‘Home’ Means to Me (included right). Lauren chose the Greater Vancouver affi liate as the recipient of her $1000 Habitat donation, courtesy of Genworth. Kyle Dingle of Toronto, Ontario was awarded the grand prize of $60,000 which he donated to the St. John’s affi liate offi ce. As a result of this year’s contest, Genworth Financial Canada has contributed over $100,000 to Habitat for Humanity affi liates across Canada!

LOCAL FINALIST: Genworth’s Meaning of Home Contest
