THE Theatre Royal Plymouth is a cultural hub serving

Plymouth and the South West region. As a creative centre

of excellence we entertain, engage, challenge and educate

our wide range of audiences. The breadth of shows we

produce and present means there is something to suit all

theatrical tastes and our creative learning work means

that anyone, from any background, can take part.

As the largest and best attended producing theatre in the

country, we collaborate with the very best artists and theatre

producers nationally and internationally, ensuring audiences

in the South West have access to world class theatre.

Innovation, creativity and partnership are at the heart

of our approach in all areas of our work which enables

us to foster and develop new talent, benefiting the wider

UK theatre landscape, and to encourage and develop the

aspirations and skills of our staff and participants.

WELCOME21

I STRONGLY FEEL THAT THE THEATRE ROYAL PLYMOUTH AND THE DRUM IN

PARTICULAR DOES SOME EXTRAORDINARY AND UNIQUE PROJECTS. IN PARTICULAR THEIR COMMITMENT TO NEW WORK OF ALL DESCRIPTIONS IS A GENUINE AND

ONGOING PASSION. I CAN SAFELY SAY THAT WITHOUT THE SUPPORT OF SIMON STOKES,

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, AND ALL THE TEAM IN PLYMOUTH WE COULD NOT HAVE REALISED

SOME OF OUR MOST EXCITING RECENT WORK. IN WHAT IS A DIFFICULT CLIMATE, I THINK THE THEATRE ROYAL’S ON-GOING

CURIOSITY AND DESIRE TO PRODUCE AND COLLABORATE ON SOME OF THE MOST

DYNAMIC THEATRE CURRENTLY HAPPENING IN THE UK AND EUROPE IS ONE THAT,

WITHOUT QUESTION, SHOULD CONTINUE TO RECEIVE SUFFICIENT SUPPORT.

Paul Hunter, Co-artistic Director of Told by an Idiot

NOT ONLY DID WE RECEIVE EXPERT SUPPORT AND ADVICE ON THE PRODUCTION ELEMENTS OF THE SHOW DURING OUR TIME AT TR2 BUT THE TEAM USED THEIR SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE TO HELP US MAKE A PRODUCTION THAT COULD TOUR WORLD-WIDE…WHEN WE ARRIVED AT THE THEATRE ROYAL WE COULDN’T HAVE HOPED FOR A MORE SUPPORTIVE AND ENTHUSIASTIC VENUE STAFF, NOR A MORE WONDERFUL AUDIENCE FOR THE WORK’S PREVIEW PERFORMANCES. ALL I CAN SAY IS THANK YOU TO EACH AND EVERY MEMBER OF THE TEAM AND ALL THOSE WHO SUPPORT THE BUILDING TO MAKE IT THE EXTRAORDINARY FACILITY IT IS - I HOPE WE’LL BE BACK AGAIN FOR OUR NEXT WORK AND MANY MORE AFTER THAT.Hofesh Shechter

IN addition to our own produced and co-produced

work we also present the very best shows available

on our stages. Often by presenting particular shows

in Plymouth we enable audiences from Penzance to

Bristol to see productions that they would otherwise

have to travel to London or Birmingham to see.

By ensuring that we present a truly broad range of theatre,

from the most innovative new writing to the largest

scale traditional musicals, dance to drama and opera to

pantomime, always of the highest possible quality, we

maintain the profile of the Theatre ensuring we contribute to

the appeal, cultural life and positive perception of Plymouth.

OVER 5,000 PEOPLE USED THE FACILITIES

AT TR2 THIS YEAR

OVER 60 TOURS HAVE BEEN CONDUCTED AT TR2 THIS YEAR

A TOTAL OF 20 PRODUCTIONS WERE BUILT (INCLUDING SETS, PROPS AND COSTUMES) AT TR2 THIS YEAR

AS part of the Theatre Royal Plymouth, TR2 is an iconic building

in Cattedown, Plymouth that houses our Production and Creative

Learning departments. The facilities are unique and include three

rehearsal studios (two of which replicate the size of the Theatre Royal

and Drum Theatre stages) and an assembly space that can house two

full sets the size of the Theatre Royal stage simultaneously.

In addition to the shows we have produced for our own stage this

year we have also built the sets, props and costumes for many other

productions in the West End and on national and international

tours. Theatre producers across the globe recognise the facilities and

expertise that we offer and the Theatre Royal’s reputation continues

to grow. Our Creative Learning department is also based at TR2

and many of the workshops, learning and development for our

participants happens alongside the production of theatre shows. TR2

is open to everyone and is an inspiring space that encourages and

embraces creativity, experimentation and learning.

CREATIVE LEARNING

109

THIS year our Creative Learning programme has enabled more people than ever before to unleash their creativity and get involved with making theatre. Our Young and People’s

Companies continue to offer opportunities for anyone to get involved, and a range of projects engage some of the most

disadvantaged people in our community. Through our Young Company Hubs we have consistently worked with young

people in deprived areas of the city, and our work with socially excluded adults includes refugees and asylum seekers, people

with learning disabilities, mental health, homelessness and substance misuse issues. Our work with schools and colleges continues apace with a range of creative projects and events

including innovative work with directors, writers and designers in schools and an extensive programme of activities linked to

the work on both stages. Staff throughout the organisation have been involved in delivering all aspects of the work and we

have forged many new partnerships both locally and nationally. Some of the highlights of the programme are outlined below.

OUR SPACE

Through weekly workshops and visits to the theatre,

Our Space aims to develop confidence and self-

esteem amongst adults who feel socially excluded

due to mental health, homelessness, or substance

misuse issues. The group is experimental and creative,

and deliberately not geared towards attainment or

accreditation. Rather, participants gain new skills whilst

rediscovering their own identities and creative talents.

DOVE TALES

Dove Tales is a creative arts group for isolated refugee

and asylum seeker women who find it difficult to

access any other provision, and is run in partnership

with Plymouth and District Racial Equality Council.

It aims to enable the women to overcome trauma

and adapt to life in Britain by creatively sharing their

experiences in a mutually supportive environment.

OUR SPACE HAS HELPED WITH THE COHESIVENESS AND TRUST AMONGST RESIDENTS HERE… I BELIEVE IT HAS CHANGED AND CONFRONTED BEHAVIOURS AND ATTITUDES ASSOCIATED WITH THEIR ADDICTION Charles Howard Baker, Closereach House

DANCE EXPLOSION

Dance Explosion was a mass participation project which aimed

for every child in every primary school to dance the same dance

at the same time in their schools and in the City Centre Piazza.

In partnership with the Barbican Theatre, Plymouth

Dance and Attik Dance, a special dance was choreographed

and a team of professional dancers taught the piece to all

participating schools. Heart FM played the song on the

radio and the schools tuned in to dance. The project has

left a legacy of dance in many schools across the city.

AUTISM PROJECT

Over a three week period in the summer holidays we ran

drama and visual art workshops with young people with

Autistic Spectrum Disorders. Many parents noted a change

in their children over the course of the project including

a more positive attitude and better behaviour. As a result,

we have now launched a new group as part of the Young

Company designed especially for young people with

disabilities who feel they would benefit from working in a

smaller group with additional support. At the end of each

term the young people perform short pieces to friends and

family as part of the wider Young Company showbacks.

GET STARTED IN THEATRE

In partnership with the Prince’s Trust, this project

aimed to motivate young people towards employment or

training through offering hands on experience of a variety

of careers. Over two weeks the group met and worked

with staff from marketing, design, wardrobe, front of

house and technical departments, whilst working with a

professional director to create their own production. Three

members of the group went on to pursue places in further

education and two successfully gained employment.
