grades K-1 A mix of experiences is a great way to gauge each child’s interest and skill level:

Begin with Telling Tales to learn some of the basics

Explore how a play is put together in Shared playwriting

Then learn about the role technical elements (like sets, props, lights and costumes) play in storytelling in Onstage

Or perhaps you are drawn to storytelling with music:

The basics in Dancing Stories

Explore the world of musical theatre in mini musical Theatre Dance

Don’t forget the singing with Sing Disney (among others)

Moving onto Continuing Sing Disney to sharpen those fundamentals

grades 2-3Our focus is on teamwork and exploration while building poise and confidence- to begin to gauge each child’s interest and skill level:

Perhaps you begin with Fundamentals of acting to learn some of the basics

Then strengthen those skills in Continuing Fundamentals of acting

Then learn about the role technical elements (like sets, props, lights and costumes) play in storytelling in Onstage

Or perhaps you are drawn to storytelling with music:

"Good Theatre Makes Your Brain Explode."Grades 6-8 TAT workshop students' definition of theatre

grades 4-5Helping students to make informed choices and discover their role in creative interpretation as well as a continued focus on teamwork and confidence guide our work:

Begin with Fundamentals of acting as we work with scripts performed on CTC’s mainstage as a springboard to learning

Strengthen and apply those skills introduced in Fundamentals of Acting in our Showtime class, as students work together to create a short play

If musicals are more appealing:

To learn basics of acting, begin with Fundamentals of acting as we work with scripts performed on CTC’s mainstage as a springboard to learning

Then explore the world of dance with either Dance glee or Dance Hip Hop - learning choreographed routines and building stamina

Don’t forget the singing with Sing glee for all the fundamentals of harmony and vocal technique

Then learn to blend these skills seamlessly in musical Theatre Jam into performance

grades 6-8Freedom of expression, exercising your imagination, refining basic skills while learning to truly think outside the box are but a few of the focuses we bring to our work:

Begin with actor’s Toolbox as we work with music, scenes from contemporary literature and improvisation for stage.

Move onto acting: process and performance deepening your understanding of objectives and playable actions while working with scenes and monologues

Then strengthen and apply those skills in our Showtime class, as students work together to create a short play

If musicals are more appealing:

Begin with actor’s Toolbox, working with music and scenes from contemporary literature and improvisation for stage

Explore the world of dance with either Broadway Dance Wicked (among others) learning choreographed routines and building stamina

Strengthen your dance skills in Broadway Dance ii

Then learn to blend these skills seamlessly into performance – with a special focus on voice - in musical Theatre Jam: Hairspray (among others)

grades 9-12Our work now includes building critical and abstract thought processes in relation to performance, supporting growth in self-reliance and confidence and helping to envision a more objective world view.

It’s time to focus on building individual skills:

Classical Theatre intensive works with text analysis, exploring tools that enable students to discover a deeper understanding of language while examining vocal and physical characterizations.

Our lab Collective supports the continued growth of writers, directors and actors without the pressure of performance. This pure process approach opens the doorway to the in-depth study of acting techniques and processes, preparing the serious young actor for his/her next steps.

For the musical theatre performer, it’s time to begin developing your true voice – Broadway Voice works with contemporary and classic Broadway songs. Students learn to connect their vocal skills to the dramatic intention critical to the development of musical theatre performers. Then strengthen your dance skills in Broadway Dance ii.

pre-professional lab programs grades 7-12Through our Lab Program, we offer to those who simply know ‘theater is it’ a comprehensive cohesive program that will give the tools needed to compete at a university or professional level. The design of the program is simple - each Lab will work to sharpen their skills in an intensive conservatory-style program. Master classes and artist hours with visiting industry professionals will contribute to their overall experience. Fall/Winter onlyDues: Each Term $60/monthMinimum commitment: 3 months

lab Collective (by audition only) grades 7-12 (Primary instructor: Annie Enneking) This collective, comprised of writers, directors and actors, will initially explore imaginative and fundamental approaches to scene study while establishing a foundation and common language as an ensemble. Through relaxation and trust exercises, sensory work, text analysis and the exploration of techniques for making active choices in the moment, each actor will work to discover the techniques that best support their work. Writers will find their voice, guided by an experienced playwright, as students learn to create rich believable characters, giving life to the stories of their imaginations and dreams! Potential projects include a marathon play creation and performance events (such as 24 plays in 24hrs by 24 actors or car plays which take place in our parking garage) as well as master classes with industry professionals. (Prerequisite: Actor’s Toolbox, Classical Theatre Intensive or similar class)Meets bi-monthly (every other week) for 3 and 1/2 hour sessionsMondays 4:30-8pm

Design/Tech lab (by interview only) grades 7-12 (Primary Instructors: CTC Staff and Others)This program is specifically designed to provide students in grades 7-12 with extensive hand-on experience in the “backstage” elements of the theatre: design and technical production of scenery/props, costumes, lighting and sound. This will be done in a professional theatre setting through practical work with the expert design and technical staff of Children’s Theatre Company. This exploration and introduction to the world of the professional production process and theatre technology will take the form of “master classes” led by industry professionals. Lab students will be invited to view the production process of a CTC mainstage production, as well as working on their own design and technical elements of the TAT senior fall and junior winter shows in the Cohen Stage. (Tech/Design Prerequisite: prior technical experience)Schedule to be determined by CTC production calendar.

april 16 - Dance! Use your body to create a rhythmic circus! Taking inspiration from Stomp and Step Teams, we will create our own dynamic combinations and polyrhythmic choreography. Our emphasis will be on learning routines and creating your own rhythms.

april 23 - Sing Out! Students will work with favorite (and of course age appropriate) Broadway songs, concentrating on the fundamentals of singing and creating characters. Focus will be on imagination, coordination, body and vocal awareness.

april 30 - Onstage Students will explore their imagination while inventing new worlds and creating characters through an investigation of sets, costumes, props and lights. Through theatre games and acting exercises, we will focus on freeing the creative spirit of each child while building a dynamic ensemble of actors.

may 7- musical Theatre Learn the basics of musical theatre, improvisation and acting fundamentals. This workshop will provide an introduction to blocking and movement to familiar songs and scenes as students explore the characters and music from favorite musicals.

may 14 - play lab Experience an authentic playwriting process, from grabbing inspiration, themes and characters out of our personal experience all the way to creating a final draft and public reading. By breaking playwriting down into its most essential parts, students will be able to learn and synthesize with the same tools grown-up playwrights use. This class will also include plenty of movement, acting and on your feet activities to help generate ideas, but is ideal for kids who love to write and/or make up their own stories.

Dance attireThe more clearly the teacher can see the student’s body joints, the more easily the teacher can give the student technical feedback. Dressing in layers is a good idea, but wearing a lot of bulky clothing makes it difficult to give feedback. It can be a bit cool in the studio at the beginning of class and very warm by the end so please shed extra clothing as we go along.

•Hair pulled back and out of face.• Jewelry - large and dangling jewelry is distracting and dangerous.

Please remove it before class.

Creative movement: Children should wear clothing that is easy to move in and that won’t inhibit movement. Sweatpants, shorts and t-shirts work very well. Children are encouraged to dance barefoot during creative movement classes.

•Ballet: Leotard and tights or sweats• Jazz: Comfortable clothing, jazz shoes

• Combo classes: Comfortable, no jeans/tight clothing• Tap: Comfortable clothing and tap shoes
