BOSCH to Celebrate Next Week

Next week BOSCH will celebrate 40 years in Arjeplog and 10 years in Vaitoudden.

The presence of BOSCH in Arjeplog is widely recognised as one of the main reasons why Arjeplog is the biggest winter test centre in the world.

When they opened the new facilities in Vaitoudden, which is situated ten kilometres from the town of Arjeplog, the Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf came to take part in the inauguration ceremony.

Wolf Dieter Jonner, now retired car tester and known as ‘the father of ABS’ opened the Vaitoudden test tracks by driving a Porsche through the ‘Ice.

As a pioneer in winter testing, BOSCH started to test vehicles on ice and frozen lakes in Swedish Lapland over 40 years ago.

Stable conditions make a perfect setting in order to take safety tests to the limit and the BOSCH Winter Test Centre in Vaitoudden is the place for engineers and research personell to test

new systems. The doors were opened in December 2003 and became an important milestone for winter testing activities for BOSCH, their customers and the region.

When the first ‘Germans’ (the name the locals used to denote all car testers at that time) arrived in Arjeplog at the beginning of the 70’s nobody could foresee what it would lead to.

Wolf Dieter Jonner ‘the father of ABS’ drove a Porsche through the symbolical ice at the opening of Vaitoudden ten years ago.

This & That‘Ride and Seek’ is the name of a new form of snowmobile event and for the first time it will be staged in Arjeplog. It is only for people with a lot of experience in back country riding.

The participants will get a GPS-coordinate which they have to find and where they must take a ‘selphie’ (photo of themselves) in front of the sign.

On the sign, there is also informa-tion concerning the co-ordinate for the next place that they must find.

All in all there will be ten differ-ent points along the route which is approxi mately 50 kms. The first person to return with ten selphies will win the event.

Ride and Seek- Snowmobile EventJoakim Armgren and Johan Sadelius from Experience Arjeplog are looking forward to this event, which they call an event and not a competition be-cause there are so many rules involved in motor racing competitions.

They explained that the idea came to them while they were having a beer in the sauna.

The event has been marketed only on Facebook and they already have about 30 people from many different places that are interested in partici-pating.

The snowmobile orienteering event will take place on Saturday first of February.

• Why is it that most car thermometers stop at minus 30°C? ‘Are they not all developed here in Arjeplog?’ asked a disappointed local when the actual temperature was minus 35°C. Does anyone have an answer to this question ?

• A German car tester bought some things at Coop Konsum the other day but realized he did not have any money with him. Gertrude Åberg, (the woman with the bright red hair) who was sitting in the cashier’s desk, offered to lend him the money privately.

He was so surprised that anyone would do such a thing for a total stranger. However, he accepted her offer and said he would return the following day to pay her back, which, of course, he did!

That’s what we call good service and mutual trust between people - which in general is characteristic of the locals in Arjeplog and our visiting car testers.

• The moose called ‘Hangöra’ (Hang-ing ear) died some months ago. In previous issues of The Arjeplog Times we wrote about this half-tame moose that often roamed about near

Ann Engberg is the new kommunchef in Arjeplog. A royal wave to all the car testers?

The new kommunchef in Arjeplog is Ann Engberg. She comes from Arvids jaur and took over this post as highest official at the municipality in autumn last year.

A tunnel through the mountains to safely connect Sweden and Norway is under discussion and is needed.

For years politicians and others have debated the building of a tunnel through the mountain called Tjern fjellet just across the border from Arjeplog. The serpentine roads connecting the Silver Road and Norwegian E6 is very dangerous and a real bottle neck for traffic between the two countries.

A man was killed in December last year when a block of ice fell down from the mountain and hit his car, as

he was driving on the road below the mountain.

Now it seems that a tunnel could be just a few years away. Politicians from Salten region in Norway are going to speak to the government and ask them why the tunnel is not happening.

It seems like most people involved are positive to opening up com-munications but 400 million SEK is needed.

In Arjeplog everybody is positive since it would mean an increase in communications between the two countries.

Hermann Buchner, Knorr-Bremse.

Present car: BMW 3 serie.

Spare time activities: Sports: fitness, running and soccer. Also, agricultural work on our farm.

What is good in Arjeplog?Nature, the landscape and the silence. We have perfect conditions for car testing, and in our case, thanks to Alf Sundström, Cartest, and his team.

What is bad in Arjeplog? The darkness in the winter months.

What music you enjoy?I enjoy a huge range of music: Rock, Indie, Electro and House, to name a few.

What is important in life?Family and friends are most important in life. And your work-life balance is import-ant, so you must take care that work is not the most important thing in your life.

In this aerial picture all the big white areas are frozen lake water. Some of it is not covered by ice because it is a moving river and they are letting out more water, making the ice thinner.

The ice on Lake Sälla between the church and Kraja is much thinner now! Do not attempt to walk on the snowmobile tracks on the ice.

Håkan Laestander, who is in charge of the damming of the lakes, said that they are letting out more water now from Lake Hornavan so the ice will become much thinner. Some of the ice might even disappear completely.

It is NOT OK to walk on the snowmobile tracks, so please take care and stay off the lakes around Arjeplog.

WARNING! Thin Ice on Lakes around the Town!

Greetings, car testers and other visitors! My name is Fredrik Westerlund and I am the

Communications Officer at the kommun (municipal-ity). When the mayor does not write this column herself, I will be the one responsible for making sure that you are up to date with the development in Arje-plog.

Arjeplog is a sparsely populated area, and so is the local government and administration. Therefore,

my job description includes internet, intranet, press, advertising, branding, marketing, social media, public relations – all kinds of communication with every target audience using any medium. I love it. And I would love to hear from you!

What are the needs of the non-Swedish speaking community of Arjeplog when it comes to infor-

mation and communication, official and otherwise? No-one knows that better than you, so please share your thoughts with me. In return, I’d be happy to share my best secrets of Arjeplog with you.

For starters, I really recommend the celebration of the Sami people on the 6th of February. This is an

opportunity to visit our beautiful church and to listen to joik, the traditional Sami way of singing.

Also, I wouldn’t leave Arjeplog without visiting my home village of Jutis for a moose safari. Seeing the

king of the forest is an experience to savour. Meeting the inhabitants of Jutis is special, too.

Next week, I’m going to give you some amazing facts about Arjeplog.

Keep in touch! You can always reach me: Email: [email protected] Phone 0739-815 3434.

Spare-time activities: I do not have so much spare time as I work every day. When I do have time, I spend time with my sambo and I enjoy watching TV series and surfing the internet.

What’s good in Arjeplog? The nature around us is beautiful. I like running my business and meet-ing all the nice people that come into my shop.I took over this business in 2008, where I had been working since 1994.

What’s bad in Arjeplog? There are not so many specialized shops, for example computer shops. For this reason, I often have to order via the internet, although I would prefer it if we had more different kinds of shops here.

What music do you listen to?Rock, pop music and hard rock..

What’s important in life? Family and being healthy.I also think that my computer is important.

A Cool Barbecue - in minus 32 degree celsiusUsually, most people wait until summer arrives before they start thinking about a having barbecue. Recently, however, some locals decided to ignore the cold weather and have a barbecue.

Håkan Laestander, a local from Arjeplog, and his family felt like they needed some cheering up in the cold weather. They decided to have an outdoor barbecue and to try the grill, even though the temperature outside was anything other than conducive to cooking outdoors.

He said that it worked fine to barbecue in the cold weather but that they needed a little bit more coal than usual. Håkan also said that the salmon that they grilled became delicious even though the temperature was below 32° celsius.

We have also heard that some car testers tried barbecueing outdoors on a balcony some years ago. So, do not let the weather stop you from enjoying the outdoor life.

Håkan Laestander did not worry about the weather or that the thermometre showed minus 32 degrees celsius, when he wanted to have a barbecue. He concluded that it worked well and the salmon was delicious.Photo: Arvid Laestander.

BOSCH, Daimler, BMW, Opel and VW were all involved in developing the first electronic anti-lock brake system for cars.

It all revolved around BOSCH and years later competitors and customers alike realised that it was important to be in the same place as BOSCH, so they also came here.

Good weather conditions, excellent service and know-how has since contributed to making Arjeplog the place to be for winter testing.

The Swedish king, Carl XVI Gustaf was one of many distinguished guests when Vaito udden opened ten years ago and he was happy to test drive a car on the BOSCH land tracks. Here he is looking at a book together with the late David Sundström, Icemak-ers, Franz Sehrenbach, Robert Bosch, Germany and Stefan Seibert, Bosch, Sweden.

BOSCH to Celebrate Next Weekcontinued from page 1

In 1989 Hans G Lehmann agreed to having a photo of him published in the local Swedish paper, Piteå-Tidningen, in exchange for a place to stay for a night. This picture, taken by Johan Fjellström, was one of the first ever published of the famous but anonymous car spy.

Last week we had a surprise visit from Christa and Hans Georg Lehmann from Hamburg in Germany.

In 1963 Hans G Lehman got the opportunity to take a photograph of a funny-looking disguised car. He took the picture to Stern magazine for which they paid him a lot of money.

The world-famous spy photographer was born and until his retirement the name Hans G Lehmann was synony-mous with pictures of prototypes from all around the world. To protect his associates, the byline was always the same: Photo by Hans G Lehmann.

At Stern he met photographer and picture editor Christa who has since been his partner and wife.

Hans G Lehmann’s biggest scoop of all was the Volkswagen Golf, caught on a public road in Spain in 1973, the Mark II in Arizona, and the Mark III in Austria. His other best known shots were of the Ford Sierra, and the Ford Mondeo at a gas station in Las Vegas. (info from Wikipedia).

Nowadays the Lehmanns travel the world and publish pictures on a website. They told us that they are now retired and only do what they think is fun.

In Arvidsjaur they met with spy photographer, friend and business partner Andreas Mau.

“It is much easier to be a spy photo-grapher these days”, said Lehmann after

After some hesitation Christa and Hans G Lehman agreed to have this photo of them published in The Arjeplog Times.

driving around with Andreas Mau for a day. “In former times we walked around in snow-shoes, today they sit in the cars with warmers on”, he explained, laughing.
