AWAULFIELD KNOCK NORTH OUT OF,PREM IERSHIP FIGHT

Kew too strong for Old TrinityNarrow wins to Fairfield, Power House

By GEORGE McTAGGART

Caulfield Grammarians finished too strongly for North Old Boys in the FirstSemi-final last Saturday, and knocked North out of the fight for this year'spremiership.

Old Trinity could not match Kew in the second half and faded out of thepicture.

Both C Section Semi-finals produced exciting finishes to high-scoring games- Fairfield beat Old Melburnians by three points and Power House "pipped"Parkside by two points .

It was even closer in the Old Hailey-bury - Fairfield Reserves game, whichended in a draw . The game will bere-played today.

Caulfield and North gave nothingaway in a tight opening in which theback lines of both sides were on top,and the scores were level at quarter-time (2 .2 each) .

North broke away for a couple ofgoals against the breeze early in thesecond term and looked like gettingon top, but Caulfield fought backwell, although they missed many op-portunities through inaccurate kickingfor goal .

Caulfield took charge shortly beforethe interval, and kicked three quickgoals to go to a 20-point lead, a handyadvantage at the half-way mark .

North were unable to break througheffectively in the third quarter andadded only 2 .4 while Caulfield kickedtwo straight goals and led by 16points at three-quarter-time .

Caulfield kept the pressure on inthe last term despite North's strongresistance, and went further away torun out winners by 37 points, and gointo the Final next week.

'Kew jumped away to a 4-goal leadover Old Trinity in the first quarterbut Trinity hit back to be only a goaldown at half-time .

Then Kew added 5 .7 to 1.3 in thethird quarter and held Trinity off inthe last to score by a comfortable 33-point margin.

Old Melburnians led Fairfield nar-rowly practically throughout, exceptwhere it really counted, and wentdown by 3 points in an excitingfinish .

They were 14 points ahead atquarter-time and three-quarter-timebut Fairfield finished a little toostrongly for them .

Power House slammed on 10 goalsin the opening term against Parksideto lead by 50 points at the firstchange ond it looked as if it was onlya matter of how much they wouldwin by.

But Parkside fought back stronglyand gradually reduced their leeway- to 31 points at the interval and 16points at three-quarter-time, and thenshot to the front shortly before thefinish.

Power House still had a little inhand however and kicked 2 goals towin by 2 points .

State Savings Bank beat LaTrobeBlacks by 11 points in a high-standard,high-scoring, see-saw game .

LaTrobe led by 3 goals at quarter-time but the Bank side kicked 7 goalsin the second term to lead by 14 pointsat the interval .

LaTrobe hit back with 8 goals inthe third quarter and were 23 pointsup at the final change, but Bank wereequal to the task and added another7 goals in the last quarter to take thegame .

Marcellin offered little resistance toAlphington in a rather disappointing,one-sided game, and Alphington werenot troubled to win by 15 goals .

Poor shooting for goal robbedElsternwick of their chance to beatAMP Society, who scored by 3 goalsalthough they had seven less scoringshots .

Elsternwick were a point in front athalf-time but A.M.P. kicked 5 goalsin the third term.

Old Ivanhoe were in front through-out against Old Camberwell and werein a sound position at the interval, with a 34-point lead . It was a greatthird term with Camberwell kicking 7goals and Ivanhoe 6, but Ivanhoeheld on to their lead and won by 32points .

LaTrobe Reds were no match forSt . Bede's who went to a 29-pointlead at half-time and finished morethan 9 goals in front .

Fawkner had little difficulty inbeating Monash Whites who weremore than 10 goals behind at thefinish. The first quarter was fairlyeven but after that it was all Fawkner .

In the Junior Section games, MonashUniversity beat North Old Boys by 19points and Ormond were much toostrong for University Blues, winningby 12 goals .

Page 4 THE

Beverley Hills' straight kicking(13 .4) gave them a 7-point win overOld Paradians and Coburg beat Park-side by more than 9 goals .

Apart from the draw between OldHaileybury and Fairfield, most of theReserve games were won by decisivemargins, the only exceptions beingSt . . Kilda CBC's 7-point win overParkside and St. Kevin's 8-point vic-tory over Old Geelong.

Power House, Alphington, Old Ivan-hoe and Fawkner, and Coburg Juniors, winners of the second semi-finals intheir respective sections last week, have gained promotion to a highersection next season .

SNOW'SSTORM

Dunno wot 'ap-pened to me storylarst week and theweek befourreckon George Mc-Taggart was sore onme gettin' me teaminter the four, an'jest left it out .

Wooden put it pas t'im yer know. (No comment-Ed .)

Well, we did make the four, an' wot' smore we won the last 'ome-an-'omer by over12 goals an' got up inter second possie .

An' that's not all - no fear, not by a longshot - we won the seccund semi an' nowwere in the grand final - wacko !

Gee, but the semi was a real nail-biterthough, we's got in front with only aboutfive minnits ter go, an' I thought we wus'ome an 'osed .

Then the dum clucks relaxed an' theother mob was quick to see it an' they got infront and then it was levvul peggin's and Ithought it wus gunna be a draw.

But me boys rise to the uccasion and"Johnno" kicked a goal an' naturally wasthe 'ero of the club .

An' a course, I come in for a latterpraise too, an' I'm the proudest man inAustralia at present .

Terday, I'll jest be lookin' on an' assessin'the form of the mob we'll come up againstin the grand final .

Tell you'se all about it next week mates !

eeeeeeeeeseeeeeeeeeeeeeoeeeeeoeeeoeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeo e

, . given it a way eh ?by Mike Dunham

"Given it away, eh? The question was asked by my companionof some years standing as he shrewdly eyed my sarsaparilla .

"Feeling crook? ""No, it's a personal decision .""Won't be seeing you in here eh?""Well, I'm here now aren't I? ""Yes, well you know what I mean, you won't be drinking that

stuff all night," he said .He was quite right of course, I learned later. I couldn't in-

clude myself in the long drinking sessions on Friday evening, and over the week-end and it wasn't the sars either . The Blokesstarted off the same way with convivial chat, but as the timepassed, I found the conversation growing louder and thelaughter more raucous and I just couldn't see the funny sideof their jokes which I realised had been repeated over and overagain. So, I began to slip away, and on the way home I evenbought a box of chocolates for my wife .

"You're home early," said my wife . My small daughterscreeched, "it's Daddy, it's Daddy," and two scruffy footballerscame in from the garden with smiles on their faces . As Isettled myself in an easy chair I was 'bombarded with state-ments and questions and stories of what "Sir" had said atschool, and would I fix this broken doll, and "the Tigers arebest, aren't they Dad?" i was wanted, it seemed . Yet this iswhat I said I couldn't face after a'herd-day's-work, I'd hadto relax with a few beers with the boys.

It happened quite slowly really and it wasn't till the fourthFriday night in a row that my wife said . "It's nice to haveyou home early these days, it makes the week-end so muchlonger," and the boys anticipating my early arrival had set upthe chessmen. It was then that I realised that I was lookingforward to it as much as they were .

I don't get involved in chook raffles anymore but I don't thinkI ever came out in front with them anyway. One week, I didwin three, but for the most part it would have been cheaper tobuy one at the delicatessen .

At the football, I don't drink and I don't miss the importantincidents .

Well, I'm $10 a week better off . I've lost weight. I like Monday morning a lot more . I'mfacing up to difficulties, and I'm taking a real interest in things, especially at work. It's funny,I used to say that grog made no difference to me . I could take it or leave it, and all that rotabout it _being manly to drink, why I've never felt better in my life. And I seem to find moretime to do things - maybe it's because I want to do them .

"Still off it then?' said my erstwhile drinking companion . "Still crook?""Not on your life," I said, "never felt better. Must rush, I'm taking the boys to the foot-

ball." ❑
