Bob & Marie Miner toGive up Fall FoliageExcursion Positions

Bob Miner announced at the Augustmeeting that Marie and he will 'retire'from working on the Fall Foliage Excur-sions at the conclusion of this season.

For them, it has been a time consumingjob, which has esculated over the past9\'cars! During September and October,Mane handles mail and phone ordersfor tickets, and also sells them at theticket booth on excursion days.

Come May, Bob visits the excursion setat least weekly, to work on keeping thecars in running shape.

SO ... 'hear' this call to spread theseduties among more members! Bob islooking for I or 2 members who canbecome familiar with the train set as awhole and know what is necessary tokeep it well maintained. This includes.among others, checking trucks, wheelsets and brakes, electrical systems. airconditioners and painting. plus improve--ments. You can 'farm' out the light work- such as the annual polishing of thewindows, mopping, wiping down theseats, putting water in the batteries orwater tank (this is only a panial list).But Bob is NOT going to call YO .Go to the phone and give the Miners acall (671-3589) to reserve a job thatinterests you (before someone else does).Have the Miners assist you this year;they may not be available to do so nextyear!

These Fall Foliage Excursions brings inthe most revenue of any of our activities.and certainly help in keeping ourR&GV RR Museum functioning. Anadded benefit is that the excursion fleetwill be paid off this year! Hence, moremonies available for other uses.

Depot Campout a Successby John Redden

The third annual Depot Campout andCookout was held at the Industry Depoton Saturday. the 16th of August andSunday, the 17th.

The evening's events staned with theround-trip operation of locomotive EK-6between the depot and the NYMT. Afterreturning. we fired up the grill and hada delicious dinner featuring Italian sau-sage. hot dogs. hamburgers. and manyside dishes and dessen,

The entertainment portion of theeverung staned with Charlie Harshbarg-er's pictures of the Churchville derail-ment. After dark, the group adjourned tothe yard. where a projector and screenwere set up for slide ,iewing. Afterseveral trays of slides. we moved to thefreshly repainted Lackawanna baggagecar and watched videos into the weehours of the morning.

The Pine Falls. the Erie caboose C-254,and the New York Central caboose19877 provided sleeping accommoda-tions. Because it \\'a$ a vel)' warm andhumid evening. the newly installed airconditioner in the Pine Falls proved tobe a valuable addition.

The following morning. a light breakfastof cinnamon rolls. milk. juice. andcoffee rounded out the stay at the depot.Thanks to all who participated. and aspecial thanks to Elaine Redden fordoing the shopping and much of thefood preparatiQn and cleanup.

Norman Shaddick

I was born and li,'Cd all my life inRochester area, except for a brief periodwhen Uncle Sam decided I should liveelsewhere. My working career was \\ithEastman' Kodak in tile field of photo-graphic quality control. and would prob-ably be ongoing were it not for aretirement offer I couldn't refuse.

Thanks to a father who worked for theErie Railroad, I can say that my interestand fascination with railroading hasbeen nearly lifelong. Thanks to both"Foreign" and "Home" passes. most ofmy family's travels were by train. Tothis day I can vividly remember beinghoisted 10 the footplate of an EricIOCOmOli\.cand silting in the fireman"sseat while we batted cars around theErie's freight year on Exchange SI., andgazing with awe into the inferno of thefirebox. As I grew up. one of my fa\'ontchaunLS was the Main Sl. overpass at thewest end of what was then the NYCyard. I remember one lime becomingbrave enough to walk into Ihe yard nea,the yard office and being promptlybooted out by a New York Central"Bull"!

Shortly after beginning my career withKodak I joined the n3\)' and spent thenext four years as a nlwy photographer.The recruitment posters Stud "Jom the3\} and See the World", and that's

exactly how it worked out as I made aworld ruise \\ ith all expenses paid.

for manv of the originals. My onlycriticism' has to do with maps. There isa reasonably good map of the Rutlanditself, but there really ought to be acomposite map that shows the routes ofthe Central of Vermont, a major com-petitor. Other than that, I'd say get orborrow a copy, read it and indulge in atrip to nostalgia with one of the "under-est" dogs there ever was.

After my discharge I swore I wouldnever again leave Utis country, but thatthought lasted only a few years beforethe urge to travel again became over-powering. Since then I have traveledfrom Australia to Zimbabwe in thesearch of trains to ride and sights to see.On the domestic rail scene, among myfavorites are the narrow-gauge lines thatcovered the state of Colorado, includingthose that still exist. Other rail-orientedorganizations I belong to are the NewYork Central Historical Society, Michi-gan State Trust for Railway Prese,,'a-tion, and the Railroad Enthusiasts.

I joined the Rochester Chapter in 1965,but was relatively inactive owing to theshift work I was involved in until myretirement. Since then I have se,,'ed onthe Board of Trustees, Stores Commit-tee, Publications Committee and Opera-tions Committee. I am presently in-volved in attempting to keep our elderlytrack cars chugging back and forthbetween our museum and the NYMT forthe public enjoyment, as well as oversee-ing the care and feed of our othermaintenance-of-way equipment

One Uting I would like to emphasize isthat rarely have I had the pri,ilege ofjoining with a group of men and womenwho worked so cohesively together forthe common cause of attempting tomaintain for the public a small slice ofwhat railroads are all about and thehuge pan they played in the develop-ment of our country.. Truly, as lim Shaughnessy wTote, theRutland "went from nowhere to no-where", and there wasn't much inbetween to generate the volume of trafficneeded 10 pro,ide adequate income. TheRutland had two termini at the southend, Chatham, NY and Bellows Falls,yr. These lines joined at Rutland fromwhere the main went north to theCanadian border. At Ihe north end,A1burgh, the Rutland went west toOgdensburg. Significantly, "the Rutlanddidn't have a single major source ofon-line traffic that couldn't be served byanother railroad".

This book tells of the ingenious schemesthe Rutland's managers employed overthe years to get and keep business. Atone time, the RUlland had a fleet ofsmall boats thaI plied the waters of theGreat Lakes to take and receive loadsfrom various lake ports in the midwest.II was the Panama Canal Act, however,that ruined this operation because thatact banned an operalor from offeringwater service in competition with railse"ice that it also controlled. Since theRutland at that time was controlled bythe New York Central, the Act appliedto the Rutland's lake boats, which hadto be withdrawn from service.

Another thing 1 had not been aware ofwas that at another time the Rutlandpromoted itself as a high speed bridgeline from the Boston market to the west.The Rutland received cars at BellowsFalls from the Boston area \ia theBoston and Maine and hauled those carsnorth to Alburgh, then west to Norwoodwhere they were interchanged with theNew York Central for the trip toSYTacuseand points further west. TheRutland's charge for Utis circuitousrouting was lower than that for anymore direct route and for a while thisyielded sufficient revenue to keep thewhole Uting going.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Thewnting is well done and easy to readand there are more pictures than anyonewould have a right to expect. It's toobad, the photos are in black-and-white,but I suppose that this also was the case
