Presidential Address

Zeta Pi ChapterSalem State University

As Alpha Sigma Phi’s fourth president it is an honor to be able to publish our first newsletter. Our goal is to be the fraternity of choice here at Salem State University and I hope the information in this newsletter convinces you to join and change any perception of Greek Life you may already have. I want it to be clear to any undergraduate that the opportunities brought by joining Alpha Sigma Phi help to Better the Man. Becoming an Alpha Sig doesn’t make you better than everyone else, but it will make you better than who you were before. You should expect to see big things from Alpha Sigma Phi coming up during the Dunnigan Girard campaign and we can’t wait to see you during rush.Jeremy Reid (left), President Logan Dunnigan (center) andDrew Davis (right) in Orlando, Florida for Grand Chapter.

A History in Tradition

Our Founding

The three original Founding Fathers Max Keenan (left), Dan Kerber (middle), and Alex Judson (Right)

The inception of Alpha Sigma Phi’s Zeta Pi chapter began several years ago when two of our founding fathers were sitting in Marsh Hall with nothing to do. Dan Kerber and Alex Judson decided that they wanted something on campus that would last and make a big impression. Something that would give them the, “brotherhood and comradery of a sports team without the practice,” as Dan Kerber put it. They soon contacted Alpha Sigma Phi HQ and their friend Max Keenan to help them start the first Greek organization on campus.

After many long days and meetings with HQ and SSU officials Dan Kerber, Alex Judson and Max Keenan went through the first pledge ceremony on July 22, 2011. They were the first of 13 brothers to be a part of the Alpha class of the Fraternity and were brothered in on December 3, 2011. Kerber took the role as the first president with Keenan as vice president and Judson as recruitment director.

It took some time, but after the Betas, Gammas, Deltas and Epsilon classes our president at the time, Josh Frank, led this colony of men into a whole new beginning by getting our approval from HQ to get our charter. On February 22, 2014 Alpha Sigma Phi colony at SSU became Alpha Sigma Phi – Zeta Pi Chapter at Salem State University led by then president Brandon Quach.

Alpha Sigma Phi was founded on December 6, 1845 at Yale University making it the tenth oldest active fraternity in the country. This means Alpha Sigma Phi has been through the Civil War, World War One, World War Two, two different mergers with other fraternities and the Great Depression. The history of Alpha Sig is very rich and we hold onto that fact with pride as we strive to better the man and initiate new brothers. While we cannot disclose too much about our rituals and ceremonies, men interested in joining get the privilege of going through the pledge ceremony as well as the two day initiation ceremony. Students on campus may see us performing the Black Lantern Processional or hear us singing one of the many songs of the brotherhood.

Throughout the pledge process you will learn about our history in more detail as well as what it means to be an Alpha Sig. You’ll also be expected to exemplify our five cardinal virtues; Silence, Charity, Purity, Honor and Patriotism. During the pledgeship you will also receive a Big that acts as a guiding force to help you learn about the fraternity and to help you grow as a man. The pledge process typically lasts six weeks and ends with Pinnacle Week where we have our last chance to make sure that you’re Alpha Sig material.

Professional and FunBrothers that show responsibility and drive to improve the fraternity can hold officer positions. This is a part of the fraternity many outsiders fail to see. Every officer position must have brothers nominated and then elected into them with voting being done by the brothers of the chapter. The top officers meet every Monday on the Prudential Board before our chapter meeting with the entire brotherhood. At chapter we discuss what each officer has done in the past week for their positions and what they plan on doing in the future.

Certain officers also get to go to Indiana for leadership conferences and officer training. These positions include president, vice president, recruitment director, treasurer, alumni director, scholarship director, sergeant-at-arms and new member educator. The president and vice president also get to go to Grand Chapter, a national conference held every other summer by HQ to vote on different policies and rules in the Fraternity. At these conferences you will be able to meet and network with other undergrad Alpha Sigs from across the country as well as Alpha Sig alumni.

These conferences combined with the on-campus experiences you’ll gain while performing your duty as an officer give you real world experience that put you one step ahead of non-Greeks in the job market. Employers like to see applicants that were apart of Greek life, especially if they held an officer position, because this shows that you have leadership skills, organizational and time management abilities and team work skills.

Alpha Sigma Phi is not only a social organization, but can easily be seen as a business club that prepares you for the real world and gives you an advantage above non-Greeks. If you don’t believe me then ask our alumni Warren Buffett.

Give it Back, Return the FavorOne of Alpha Sigma Phi’s cardinal virtues is charity and nationally we have five different charities; Homes for Our Troops, RAINN, The Humane Society, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Big Brothers Big Sisters. We also work with many local organizations to give back to our great city and to help form a greater sense of community.

We have held several formal balls to raise money, bike-a-thons, countless hours of community service and small events to raise money for our national charities as well as local ones. Every spring we have the Alpha Sigma Phi Formal and have raised over two thousand dollars from this one event. Recently we have done volunteer work at the Boys and Girls Club in Salem, Northeast Animal Shelter, participated and won 5k races and polar plunges for local youth centers. We strive to have at least one charity event each month to make sure we are constantly improving our community.

The Zeta Pi Chapter also holds many fundraising and social events. You might see us in the quad getting pied in the face or giving out free coffee and hot chocolate. We make it our goal to not just raise money, but to have a better presence on campus and to get students more involved. In the past we have also won the first two Greek Games, a contest of physical and mental prowess between the Greek organizations and other groups on campus.

As previously mentioned, we also hold an annual formal ball to raise money for charity. Perhaps our biggest and most fun event we have all year, the Alpha Sigma Phi Formal has been a hit every year since our inception. We also have much smaller socials with other groups on campus so we can get to know our fellow students better and show that Alpha Sigs are both gentlemen and scholars.

The Bonds that Tie UsNo matter why you decide to join Alpha Sigma Phi we stay active as undergrads and alumni for one reason and that’s brotherhood. You might not see it looking in from the outside, but it is hard to ex-plain when looking out from the inside too. We have brotherhood retreats like Mountain Weekend as well as Brosgiving and the Lobster Dinner during rush week, where we invite potential new members to come dine with us so we can get to know each other better. Throughout the year we have several official and unofficial brotherhood events that are typically free. In the past we have done skiing/snowboarding trips, camping trips, hiking, several road trips and other outings. The bonds you’ll make by joining and by getting involved will shock you and last a lifetime.Left to right: James Barber, Matt MacNichol, Logan Dunnigan, Brandon Quach, Kevin Johnson, Matt Johnson, Matt Dever, Bran-don Girard and Christian Vogel at Pumpkin Fest 2014 in Keene, New Hampshire.

How to Join F.A.Q.Interested in joining? Contact our recruitment director, Mark Horgan, and like our FaceBook, Twitter or Instagram pages or message any brother mentioned in the newsletter directly on FaceBook for more information. Also, look out for upcoming Spring Rush events coming this week.

Q: What is the time commitment like? Can I be a part of other groups and will I have time for a job?

A: Absolutely, we encourage our members to be as ac-tive on campus as possible. A majority of the brothers are a part of some other group, club or team. Almost all of our brothers are working men too. We under-stand how important it is to work and make money while in school.

Q: What about my grades? Will I have time to focus on school?

A: Grades are incredibly important to us. The two things that should always come first are family and academics and we encourage our brothers to have high scholastic standards through various scholarships.

F.A.Q. Continued from Page 5Q: Do you guys do anything other than party?A: Of course, while we do like to have fun like any other college student we also do a lot more than just party. As previously explained in the newsletter we do service events, have socials, brotherhood outings, fundraisers, etc. Alpha Sigma Phi can easily be described as a business club as much as it can be described as a social organization.

Q: I’m a commuter, will this be an issue?A: Not at all. Most of our brothers are commuters or were commuters when they pledged. We en-courage all students interested in joining to contact us or come to one of our rush events.

Q: I’m not a freshman. Is there any downside to joining as an upperclassman?A: The only deficit to joining as an upperclassman is that you didn’t have more time in the fraternity before you graduated. We have had people of all grades, even seniors, join the fraternity.
