A motionis a formal proposal by a member, in a meeting, that thgroup take certain action.* A main motionis one whose introduction brings business before an assembly. Strictly speaing, there should be no debate on a matter before a motion regarding it has been made. Only one main motion maybe before the assembly for action at a time. ** Below are the steps in appropriately making a motion.

    EIGHT STEPS TO A MOTION

    1. Member addresses the chair

    2. Assigning the floor- chair recognizes the member and gives her the right to speak

    3. Member makes the motion- I move that

    4. Another member seconds the motion (does not have to agree with the motion)5. Chair states the motion (body cannot debate the motion until it is restated by the chair)

    6. Debating the question-Maker has the right to speak first in debate. Maker cannot speak against the moti
