It's as if the Father was standing every day on the roof, looking off into the distance, hoping that his lost son would return. As soon as he sees him he rushes towards him. God never stops hoping that we will come to him. He has his eyes on us all the time, not to pounce on us when we mess up, but to run to us, embrace us, kiss us, and clothe us with the robe of his grace and the sandals of divine sonship (servants went barefoot, but family members wore sandals). This active, unconditional love of God is the source of Christian joy. The devil wants us to forget about it - especially when we most need to remember it. Then the older son hears the sounds of celebration, finds out what happens, and boycotts the party. So what does the father do? St Luke tells us: "His father came out and pleaded with him..." God takes the initiative in our lives. He steps towards us first; he comes out to meet us. Remembering this and living in light of it - that's the secret to Christian joy. Today God invites each one of us to renew this experience of Christian joy. Most of us, if we're honest, have to admit that often life's troubles seem to obscure our joy instead of giving it a chance to shine. If that's the case, we need to refresh our friendship with Christ, the source of Christian joy. One simple way to do that is to speak about the many blessings he has given us. To talk to others about the good things God has done for us forces us to turn our attention to the God who is always paying attention to us. If we try to speak about God in at least one conversation every day, with friends, family members, or colleagues, it will be harder for us to forget about God's goodness and love, the source of Christian joy. We will also spark others to remember God's goodness. There is one family who has dinner together every night during Lent. Over the forty years that the Israelites journeyed through the

desert, God provided them with manna to eat. As soon as they

were able to enjoy the fruits of the Promised Land the manna

ceased. Likewise, God’s blessings to us may change over the years

but it is important to trust that God will always provide us with all

that we need.

LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Parishioners,

What makes Christian joy possible is God's loving attention. God is

always paying attention to us. He can't stop thinking about each one

of us. Just as the father did with his two sons in today's parable. Now

that is precisely the good thing that our heart aches for, because

that's what it was made for, to be known and loved through and

through. So when we turn our attention to God, we see him paying

attention to us, knowing and loving us, and that fills us with a joy that

doesn't wear out. That's why the Psalm says "Look to him that you

may be radiant with joy." That's what the Church is reminding us of

today: Rejoice! God is thinking of you!

Two details in today’s parable of the prodigal son really bring this

message home. The younger son, who had squandered his inheritance

and almost lost his life, finally comes to his senses, remembers his

father's goodness and wisdom and decides to come home. Then St

Luke tells us: "While he [the younger son] was still a long way off, his

father caught sight of him... He ran to his son..." It's as if the Father

was standing every day on the roof, looking off into the distance,

hoping that his lost son would return. As soon as he sees him he

rushes towards him. God never stops hoping that we will come to

him. He has his eyes on us all the time, not to pounce on us when we

mess up, but to run to us, embrace us, kiss us, and clothe us with the

robe of his grace and the sandals of divine sonship (servants went

barefoot, but family members wore sandals). This active,

unconditional love of God is the source of Christian joy. The devil

wants us to forget about it - especially when we most need to

remember it. Then the older son hears the sounds of celebration,

finds out what happens, and boycotts the party. So what does the

father do? St Luke tells us: "His father came out and pleaded with

him..." God takes the initiative in our lives. He steps towards us first;

he comes out to meet us. Remembering this and living in light of it -

that's the secret to Christian joy.

Today God invites each one of us to renew this experience of Christian

joy. Most of us, if we're honest, have to admit that often life's

troubles seem to obscure our joy instead of giving it a chance to

shine. If that's the case, we need to refresh our friendship with Christ,

the source of Christian joy. One simple way to do that is to speak

about the many blessings he has given us. To talk to others about the

good things God has done for us forces us to turn our attention to the

God who is always paying attention to us. If we try to speak about

God in at least one conversation every day, with friends, family

members, or colleagues, it will be harder for us to forget about God's

goodness and love, the source of Christian joy. We will also spark

others to remember God's goodness. There is one family who has

dinner together every night during Lent. And during the dinner each

member of the family has to share with everyone else at least one

blessing that they received from God during the day.

It takes the virtue of faith to turn our attention away from life's

problems and focus on God's blessings. And that's one way to

rediscover the secret of Christian joy.

May God bless you.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT SUNDAY, MARCH 31, 2019 CUATRO DOMINGO DE CUARESMA DOMINGO 31 DE MARZO DEL 2019

CARTA DE NUESTRO PÁRROCO

Queridos Feligreses:

TRAINING EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION

Coming Soon!!!! Have you thought about being an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion (EMHC) at St. Jerome? Please consider serving your fellow parishioners in this important ministry. Qualifications are that you are a confirmed Catholic, over 18 years of age and either unmarried or in a valid Catholic marriage. We will offer our next training session beginning in the Church Sanctuary soon. All Current EMHC are asked to attend this training for continuous training that is mandated by our Archdiocesan Office of Worship. TRAINING FOR NEW AND CURRENT LECTORS

Coming Soon!!! Have you thought to become a Lector? Lectors are responsible for the proclamation of the Word of God during liturgical celebrations in the church. They are called to help make the Word of God come alive for the assembled people in the church. All who are interested in this liturgical ministry must have a deep and prayerful relationship to the Word of God, an ability to speak and project clearly, and a willingness to commit their time to preparation of the readings they are assigned. If this is for you, we will have a lectors orientation training coming soon. All current Lectors and those that are inquiring must attend. “Christ is present in the liturgy through the Eucharist, the priest, and the assembly that prays and sings. He is also present in the Word since it is he himself who speaks when the Holy Scriptures are read in the Church.” (CCC 1088 & SC 7)For information and to order a Lector Workbook please contact Deacon Dan 713-468-9555 or Joel Hernandez [email protected] /281-451-2127
