The first thing that attracts you about Fashion Communication is its fascinating fusion of a name. You read ‘fashion’ and think ‘Oh, another Sabyasachi in the making’, but the added ‘communication’ completely throws you off! Are they marketing graduates or just fancy tailors? Is this even a legitimate course or just a way to please those kids who couldn’t become doctors, engineers or anything normal? Truth be told, if you ask a Fashion Communication enthusiast what she thinks of the field, she’ll probably give you some lame description of its holistic, versatile nature. But only a student who has endured four years in this domain can tell you that it’s the most confusing career choice one can pick.                                                 They start by introducing you to Design Methodology – the bread and butter of any creative mind. So you think you’ve made the right decision by choosing FC, but then they ask you to construct a fashion installation and you’re like ‘Okay, HOW is that going to teach me the subject?’ And thus begins the long-standing affair of disparity between what an FC module reads and what an FC module delivers.   The most epic fail in the history of our course would most definitely have to be the class on Fashion ‘Choreography’. Not once did we see a ramp or learn how to walk like pros. Instead, we received anonymous heartfelt messages from each other! Though in all honesty, the exercise was a huge relief from the pool of overwhelming submissions we had lined up. But maybe they should have called the module ‘Find out what your classmates REALLY think of you’ and they probably would have had more students attend this class than the choreography one. Why? Because we’re 25 GIRLS! Of course we want to know what our classmates think of us. Pfft!

The disparity amplified, as did our sheer nonchalance. Year after year we stomached classes that had little relevance to our career

choices, all the while hoping that somewhere along the way, we’ll each find our calling. And while some of us were lucky enough to figure out what we want to do for the next 50 years of our lives, there are still a few who are confused enough to question their education. “Yeah but what do I do next?”  It’s probably easy for a commerce student to get out of college and choose a specialization to focus on but ask an FC student what plans she has for the future and you’ll probably hear ‘Dude, I don’t even know what I’m doing for my degree project and you’re asking me about LIFE?’

But let’s not be too harsh. Some FC classes nearly killed us with the workload but the projects developed were absolutely stunning! However, more than the academic knowledge given to us, it was the class environment itself that made the four years worthwhile. Being a part of the Fashion Communication batch of 2012-16 has been edifying in many ways. The time

we singlehandedly set up an entire design event, ShilpKatha 2014, was probably one of our proudest moments. Working together as a class, exchanging ideas, growing as communicators, standing up for one another and of course, the relentless gossiping - these are things no Google or Wikipedia could impart. This comes from sharing life-changing experiences with a bunch of 24 other girls, each of whom is irreplaceable in her own special way. The same course in any other college would have probably taught us what we anticipated, but here at Symbiosis, it gave us something completely unexpected - unity and a sense of belonging.  Fashion Communication at Symbiosis may not have been everything we fancied, but it has surely taught us how to make exceptional team players of ourselves.Oh, and also, presentations! We make some pretty kickass presentations.

Jack of all trades,

master of one.

What is your take on the fashion scene in India?

The scene in India is very different from what we witness in other fashion capitals. Fashion in India is very restricted to urban areas. The developed regions are the only ones exposed to the idea, while rural areas fall behind. Having said that, the industry is growing slowly. It is a part of art, but is still treated as a part of design. It does not have a separate identity of its own.

Fashion Communication to you is,

Being able to communicate fashion and being a visual storyteller for fashion. It’s more about visuals and the message delivered in the most beautiful way possible. We, as communicators, are mediators of fashion.

Your best memory in the four years of Fashion Communication is,

Working as a class or a group. The dynamics of our class is very beautiful!

The most important thing Symbiosis has taught you is,

Live life to the fullest. And move on even in the hardest of situations. Don’t ever give up!

Your most embarrassing moment in class was,

On the first day of second year, when I walked in, I didn’t have my glasses on because they flew off in Lonavla the night before. Robin Sir was introducing me to the entire class and I didn’t know a single person there. At the same time, I couldn’t even see anyone. So I just stood there being all awkward. He asked me to wave to everybody. I just blindly said a huge ‘HI’ to everybody and quietly went and sat down! I’ll never forget that day.‘Style is a way to

say who you are without having to speak..RACHEL ZOE

Page 18: The Yearbook - Inside Out

the Yearbook FASHION COMMUNICATION

I was so lucky to be a part of this class - the diversity of which excites me, how each one of us is soo unique, so beautifully talented in their own way! Together we define what FC stands for. We challenge each other, appreciate each other, help each other, criticize each other and most importantly, we have learnt so much from each other. We have grown as a class, our journey has been beautiful because of the amazing company we had!

23‘Wear clothes that even if you had to go to bed in them, you’d still have a comfortable nap.

What is your take on the fashion scene in India?

The fashion in our country needs to grow in terms of mindset. Fashion is way of expression; our country will never truly accept fashion as an integral part till we don’t have freedom of expression.

Fashion Communication to you is,

It is an understanding of how to communicate fashion to the masses through various media and expression.

Your best memory in the four years of Fashion Communication

The memories I have made here cannot be categorized as anything. Each day here has been an adventure and has led to stories and memories I cannot forget.

The most important thing Symbiosis has taught you is,

The ability to think beyond the expected. The ability to understand and solve a Design problem.

Non academically it taught me the importance of second chances.

Where do you want to be 5 years from now?

Paris or probably working in Vogue.I just want to write to my heart’s content, doesn’t matter where I am.

What is your take on the fashion scene in India?

Culturally, India is a very rich country. Even though India is backward when it comes to following trends, I think the country stands out with respect to her own styles and silhouettes. No other country can ever be compared to the traditional appeal that India is known for.

Fashion Communication to you is,

An era that has helped me learn and develop as an individual and as a designer.

Your best memory in the four years of Fashion Communication was,

A class that brought us all together as ONE! The day we wrote nothing but good things about each other on our backs. The perfect reunion of a class that had already been together for 2 years - the Fashion Choreography Module.

The most important thing Symbiosis has taught you is,

Being confident and presenting yourself to the best of your ability.

What is your take on the fashion scene in India?

Fashion in India is blooming and at a rapid rate. Due to globalization and the economic boom, the fashion industry in India is now exposed to many trends and styles. Fashion in India consists of many variations due to its diverse culture.

Fashion Communication to you is,

A platform to sell and market fashion and lifestyle products with the help of a number of skills that the course teaches you.

Your best memory in the four years of Fashion Communication

All the crazy times I’ve spent with my three girlfriends, who are like family to me.

The most important thing Symbiosis has taught you is,

The world won’t wait for you and you have to handle your own work without depending on anyone.

Tell us one thing no one knows about you,

Well, it’s not something everyone knows, but I’ve been a Bharatnatyam dancer since I was a small kid and an All-India level competition winner thrice. I have also performed at fests like Bandra fest and Kalaghoda.

Where do you want to be 5 years from now?

Probably have my own styling house and be a head stylist in movies.

What is your take on the fashion scene in India?

Fashion in India is fast growing, but still has a long way to go. In a country that is still in awe of doctors and engineers, an industry like fashion really needs to up its game. Internationally, it’s addiction to Bollywood must die for it to be taken seriously across the globe.

Fashion Communication to you is,

Extremely dynamic. I’ve spent hours explaining to people what I study and each time I explain, I learn something new about it myself.

Your best memory in the four years of Fashion Communication

It would have to be Robin Sir’s farewell speech. After 2 years of telling us that our lives are a total waste because we haven’t experienced all the ‘right’ movies, music and literature, he finally let his guard down and told us that he was glad to have been a mentor to such a talented class. I guess that was a proud moment for each one of us.

The most important thing Symbiosis has taught you is,

That anything can be found. You just have to look in the right places! It’s also taught me the value of my family and how living away from home can completely change the way you see things.

What’s your style mantra?

If you like it and think it looks good, just wear it. Don’t worry about what the world will think. Like they say, ‘You can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world and there will still be someone who hates peaches.’

Where do you want to be 5 years from now?

I want to be living abroad, doing what I love and hopefully succeeding at it. Success - that is key.

Page 42: The Yearbook - Inside Out

Coming to Symbiosis was literally a freak chance for me, but it is possibly one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Being a part of this class, growing with you girls and learning from each and every one of you has made me what I am today. Thank you so much for making these 4 years worth it and let’s hope that we all, however confused some of us might be, find our calling some day. 47‘Personality begins where comparison ends.KARL LAGERFELD

What is your take on the fashion scene in India?

As is the case with every other industry in India, the fashion industry too is evolving - at a very slow pace, but evolving nonetheless. We do have newcomers in the industry who are wiling to experiment and bring something new to the table every now and then. So it is quite refreshing.

Fashion Communication to you is,

A form of expression. A fashion designer may or may not be able to convey his/her message or idea across clearly, be it due to lack of skills or time. We as communicators bridge that gap. We show the world the amount of thought, patience, skills, passion, time and effort that goes into this industry; that fashion too, is a form of art.

Your best memory in the four years of Fashion Communication

Oh there are so many! But the best so far, would be the last day of shooting for FCP 2, third year. Som and I had been working for months, and it all finally came down to four days of continuous and intense shoots. We probably slept for like 10 hours in 4 days, we got kicked out of locations, our vendors bailed on us at the last moment, we cried in front of Largo Pizzeria and to Ruhi ma’am over the phone. But it was all finally over and oh my god, the relief that we felt once it was done is something that I cannot express with words alone. And the final deliverable turned out good too!

Your most embarrassing moment in class was,

My most embarrassing moment (or funny actually) was in third year while we had Design Showcase for Event Management. I was put in the styling, AV and the ISI team.

But by the end of it, I had so much work in styling and AV that I couldn’t work on ISI. So before the jury, Akanksha posted on the whataspp group saying she wouldn’t be presenting with the ISI group since she had hardly worked with them. So I replied saying “Hey, count me out too. And let Robin and Neetu know.” Without realising that this wasn’t the FC class group. This group consisted of the team members along with both Robin Sir and Neetu Ma’am. Immediately after that, Akanksha messaged me on a private chat saying “They’re both there on the group, Alaida! And you referred of them as Robin and Neetu”. I FLIPPED OUT. The next thing I see is Neetu Ma’am ‘typing’ on the group! I just left the group too afraid to read what she would say. She stopped typing after I left though. I will never forget that day. Thank god I didn’t have to bump into either of them for a while because we had our summer break right after that. *phew*

Honestly, I haven’t met SO MANY talented people in one class. So kudos to all of you, to these last 4 years, to all the laughter, gossips, sadness, drama and every memory that we shared together. I really do hope you all succeed in whatever you wish to do after this.

ALAIDAA FEW WORDS FROM

the Yearbook FASHION COMMUNICATION

Page 49: The Yearbook - Inside Out

49

What’s your style mantra?

I’m not entirely sure because I’m constantly changing. Its not about evolving with time or following trends per se, which I do obviously. But in terms of personal style, I think i like to try everything, I wouldn’t call it experimental, cause its literally only because i tend to get bored of things easily.

Where do you want to be 5 years from now?

This is probably a little too farfetched. But I really want to be working for Alexander McQueen the label. Oh if only he were still alive!

I believe the fashion industry in India is evolving but it has a long way to go before it becomes one of the biggest fields in the country. Mass acceptance still remains.

ELSA SCHIAPARELLI

What is your take on the fashion scene in India?

Well, in India, the fashion scene is very superficial and definitely lacks depth. There is potential in the field for sure, but the drive and motive is diluted. It makes me sad to see how fashion has no voice and is not a medium of expression in the country. There is scope for change to take place, and students like us must work towards the betterment of the same.

Fashion Communication to you is,

Quite dynamic, actually. I do think that its been misinterpreted in our country, and that it is not very confined, like they have branched out a little too much, which resulted in a very confused state for me, because now at the end of the course, I like so many different aspects of Fashion Communication that, now, I don’t know what to do!

Your best memory in the four years of Fashion Communication

It was the Fashion Choreography class where we wrote good things on each other’s backs. It was very uplifting and as a class we became closer. I remember coming back home that day with a huge smile on my face.Thank you, girls!

The most important thing Symbiosis has taught you is,

Oh, lots! I became an adult, and a pretty decent one at that, thanks to this place. It has been a roller coaster ride, from learning how to make your place in this college to how we must not judge a book by its cover. This place also taught me how friends make a huge difference. What is your take on the fashion scene in India?

Fashion all over the world has always been a major subject of discussion for centuries now. India has been a developing country and never had major concerns with the fashion industry. For a few decades now, India has been trying to cope up with the fast-changing fashion industry globally. Fashion as an industry is evolving in our country. But, we still have a long way to go.

Fashion Communication to you is,

A course that has helped me evolve majorly. To me, it is being able to do anything and everything - the initial phase of being compelled to work on all the subjects to how we all have branched out into subjects of our interest. We are now ready to go out and deal with all the challenges that befall us.

Your best memory in the four years of Fashion Communication

SHILPKATHA’14, where the class came together as a whole and put up an amazing event. It was good to know how each of us had our own skill sets and how the work had a perfect balance in every department. That was when we evolved as a group, as a class, as professionals. We are now all so comfortable with each other whether it’s work or a party. We make a great team!

The most important thing Symbiosis has taught you is,

We are all very different, very obviously because we have all come from very diverse backgrounds. But sincerely speaking, it is not that difficult to tolerate the differences and stay together as a team. At this point, we learned what a team is and how teamwork builds us as people.

Where do you want to be 5 years from now?

What is your take on the fashion scene in India?

Fashion in India is still expanding and there is a lot left to explore. People don’t take this industry too seriously right now, but it has come a long way since its inception.

Fashion Communication to you is,

An all rounder! This course teaches you every thing about every thing. It’s pretty amazing to see what you can learn here.

Your best memory in the four years of Fashion Communication was,

Craft Documentation at Saaniya’s house in Hyderabad. The bonding, late night gossiping as well as learning about the craft was probably my favourite phase.

The most important thing Symbiosis has taught you

Jo dikhta hai, wo hota nahi hai!And this is something I’ll remember for life.

‘Some of the worst mistakes of my life were haircuts.

The funniest moment you’ve experienced in class was,

When someone *cough cough* was trying to hide from Robin Sir during a presentation!

What’s your style mantra?

Classy, yet simple and cute. I don’t like stuff that’s too over the top.

Your friends would describe you as,

Calm, friendly and extremely bubbly. Although not many people know that I do have a temper and sometimes I just want to kill people if they annoy me too much.

Where do you want to be 5 years from now?

Chilling with a huge bank balance - doesn’t really matter WHERE I am!

Fashion Communication to you is,

To explore everything and be the best version of yourself.

Your best memory in the four years of Fashion Communication was,

Fundamental and DZMA - our college fests!

The most important thing Symbiosis has taught you is,

You are your best friend. You will have to make your own way.

What’s your style mantra?

Buy less yet expensive things, but don’t be afraid to mix and match. If nothing works, a slick of lipstick will.

Fashion Communication to you is,

Something that just sounds too cool. I still don’t know *@#$ about FC but in a year I’ll be called a Fashion Communicator pursuing Visual Merchandising. Say this to a layman and just a sound of it would make you fancier and so much more dateable.

Your best memory in the four years of Fashion Communication was,

Fashion Choreography classes taken up by Rishikesh sir. He asked me to look into his eyes, while I paired up with him during the dance lessons (Duh, as if that could make me fall in love with him. Blah!)

The most important thing Symbiosis has taught you

“College is no spoon-feeding and that’s why we don’t teach!” Yes, it is exactly why I shifted to a whole new city and got my dad to pay those 6 digit numbers every freakin’ year.

Where do you want to be 5 years from now?

In a video shot by the Wedding Stories.

It has happened furtively on haystacks. It has happened in the backseats of cars. It has happened with fetishes, bondage and torture too. There’s no telling what you get into when you get out of your Levi’s.

89‘You’re considered superficial and silly if you are interested in Fashion. But I think you can be substantial and still be interested in Frivolity.

What is your take on the fashion scene in India?

For all that I have learnt in 4 years of my college life, I have yet to form an unprejudiced opinion on the subject (Sadly). Mostly because I’m overly critical of the ideologies that a huge percentage of the industry follows. But of course there is another side to the argument because of the few radicals that are riding on the winds of change. I’ll be looking for the silver lining in the years to come and hope to form an opinion with depth and perspective.

Fashion Communication to you is,

Convincing my extended family that I don’t do ghagras.

Your best memory in the four years of Fashion Communication was,

101‘Creating something out of thin air is easy. It’s finding the air that’s hard.

What is your take on the fashion scene in India?

In one word, exciting. The student in me is awestruck by a few budding designers who are breaking through the fashion scene in India with their unique styles. The most exciting bit is the eccentricity of the budding Indian street style. And why shouldn’t we be unique? We are the hotbed of culture, art and heritage, we long deserved what weare making!

Fashion Communication to you is,

A thing that scared me plenty and confused me enough, but was also the answers I was looking for. It gave me the answers to the first few questions I had asked myself as a young adult.

Your best memory in the four years of Fashion Communication was,

Probably the best memory was the day Rishikesh Sir made all of us stick blank pages on our back and made the entire class write one good thing about us. Or wait, does that come second to the class party we had at Nancy and Dharini’s place to celebrate the success that Shilpkatha was? *dreamily gazes into the unknown*

The most important thing Symbiosis has taught you is,

I was quite the ‘nerdy nerd’ in school (though make no mistake, I was super fun :P ) and the one thing college taught me is that its okay to let my hair down sometimes. Take each day as it comes and leave no place in it for regret to budge in.

What’s your style mantra?

I never walk out of my room if I don’t feel comfortable in what I’m wearing. I believe if you feel comfortable in your own skin, anything you wear seamlessly becomes a part of you, like another extension of your being, and seems effortless.

Where do you want to be 5 years from now?

What is your take on the fashion scene in India?

I think the fashion scene in any country, not just India, has a lot of scope. Fashion is something we each, whether rich or poor, stylish or not, incorporate in our daily life. What lacks in a country like India is the basic essence of the term. Agreed, it’s for the masses, but India needs to see it as an art, rather than just generalize it as something that people with no other option do. The moment India sees it as real art, is when it will grow. Fashion commentators, even designers and models for that matter, are all imitating someone sitting in one of the fashion capitals. The moment people take it more seriously, is when a new perception will be born, and that is where the scope lies.

Fashion Communication to you is,

A giant mix of too many things with way too much scope. A field that actually has an upper hand over so many others. What I learnt in graphics through FC is invaluable, because I knew about Branding, Marketing, etc. and hence could gauge better as to what would work and what wouldn’t.

Your best memory in the four years of Fashion Communication

I don’t have a best memory, there are too many. But if I had to choose one, then it would be ShilpKatha. It brought the class together like no other event did, each person in the class was equally involved in it, and the way it panned out at the end was amazing.

What I didn’t know was that there was going to be an enormous amount of talent, energy, perseverance and intelligence which would motivate me so much. We have set the benchmark for our juniors (I hope no-one crosses us), and I feel so great that I am a part of this phenomenal batch of women who, quite frankly, killed it!

I like to watch movies alone. The whole essence of the movie goes away the moment I watch it with someone, unless I have seen it before. I feel different when I watch it alone, helps me grasp better.

Keep it simple, silly! Gaudy, over-the-top stuff is definitely not my thing. You will see me dressed in very neutral colors most of the time, and if at all I do go for brighter tones, or something out of my comfort zone, I will find a way to make it subtle, or back it goes into the wardrobe!

Indian fashion scene has always been fascinating, constantly changing with a wide native variation. It has been blooming with a peak in the past few years and catching up on the global trends due to globalization. I love the new merge of native indian fashion and western fusion.

Fashion Communication to you is,

Everything that there is to do with fashion. Literally. Everything.

Your best memory in the four years of Fashion Communication was,

The one module we had, where sir made us tape paper on our backs and made us write about each other. It was surprisingly beautiful to know what everyone thought and how well connected our class is. Definitely got us much closer as a class.

The most important thing Symbiosis has taught you

Explorations. Ideation. Brainstorming - these are crucial parts of the design process. Also, follow your gut, it usually puts you in the right where you need to be.

Where do you want to be 5 years from now?

Someplace happy. Doing what I do best, enjoying the little joys of life.

I’ve not really been able to socialize much with everyone, but I am glad for all the conversations I have had with each one of you. All of you are such talented people and beautiful souls. I am immensely happy to have been a part of this class that constantly has pushed and help everyone grow. Hope to always remain in touch.

153‘Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak..

What is your take on the fashion scene in India?

In crude terms fashion is a style of living. The western culture is cultivating a grand love affair with the distinctive fashion style in India. Along with Indian music and spirituality, Indian clothing is seeing a huge impact on main stream identities of western style and culture. Most Indians express a great deal through their clothing. Their quench for ultimate perfection plays a huge role in their choice of beautifully colored dramatic and sensuous garments.

Fashion Communication to you is,

A course where you actually learn about different courses, from graphic designing to making a short film to wielding to the basic of photography. I’m sure we have learnt the surface of everything.

Your best memory in the four years of Fashion Communication was,

I wouldn’t say the best memory but yeah one of the best memories, where a few days before my 20th birthday I was telling my friends I want to cut my hair and they took me to a parlour for a surprise haircut.

The most important thing Symbiosis has taught you

To choose friends wisely.

Where do you want to be 5 years from now?

NEW YORK CITY! Working in one of the top brands.

What’s your style mantra?

Comfort and fit are two must-haves for me. Comfort is my number one priority. I never thought of myself as stylish. For me style is always a representation of what you want to wear but doing it in a unique way and expressing yourself. I decide on my accessories once I have made up my mind about the clothes that I want to wear. It should match my outfit. But I like to keep it simple.

159‘What is your take on the fashion scene in India?

Fashion in India has its own essence, traditions which we see in the dressing sense of our elders, but today due to globalization, westernization, celebrity culture, digital boom and the emergence of gen-next designers we see a new perspective in the Fashion scene of India. It is much more globalized and liberalized with an Indian touch to it, like for example, how we see many designers are trying to revive the Indian heritage handlooms through western drapes to have a global acceptance.

Fashion Communication to you is,

A way to communicate the aesthetics of art, fashion, design, music, movies and lifestyle to the people in the most comprehensive and elucidative way possible, it is the one field where I can explore my other co-related interests like music. It was allows me to be eclectic to my heart’s content.

Your best memory in the four years of Fashion Communication

Third year of Fashion Communication in totality was one of the best year. I had a great experience, and especially the Fashion Appreciation and Journalism class was one of the most daunting experience, which helped me become dauntless and accurate about what I want to do in my future.

People will stare Make it worth their while.

The most important thing Symbiosis has taught you is,

The most important thing college has taught me in these four years is the importance of first impressions, discipline, punctuality, the pros and cons of honesty, how to be and how not to be, the difference between professionalism and emotionalism, how to deal with a whole lot of hatred, the value for money and especially a whole lot of gratitude for my parents.

Where do you want to be 5 years from now?

I see myself teaching students and inspiring them to lead a inspiring life, I see myself enjoying the creative satisfaction by teaching what I have imbibed from my inspiring professors and colleagues, I also see myself doing what I love, which is singing, writing, making a lot of beautiful bonds as I travel to all the places I have dreamt of since childhood and taking my parents for their first trip abroad with my own earnings.

I am a state-level swimmer since 1st grade. But am scared to death of Crocodiles and drowning, due to which I joined swimming at first. I am still scared to death of crocodiles due to a childhood incident. But I have overcome the fear of drowning as I have swum in different lakes and the Bay of Bengal for competitions.

I was as new to teaching as was the batch of 12-16 to the course of design. As we started and walked the journey of four years, the class of FC gave me a delightful insight into the world of teaching. The enthusiasm of each student, the eagerness to learn each day was enriching and nourishing. Fresh ideas, radiant explorations, never failing to believe in yourself and in me. It wasn’t just sermons, but a lovely exchange. We both learned each day, from success and failure. I can truly admit that it was the batch of FC 12-16, which made me fall in love with the idea of teaching. And in them I don’t just find great students, but also friends for life. I hope we continue to inspire each other. And hope that each one from the batch has a great future ahead and the world gets to see what they are capable of!

So the semester is coming to an end. Soon all of you will be caught up with internships and before you know it, graduation day will be upon you. It has been an absolute pleasure watching each one of you grow and learn how to deal with criticism, overcome problems as trivial as a forgotten SID Wifi password, to admitting and asking for help when you’ve messed up, to bounce back when all are doubting you, to holding it together and pushing yourself to concentrate when a million other temptations are fingertips away. When I look back, I believe it’s that insatiable gene and the resilience in conquering adversity, which truly sets you apart as a class. Whatever you decide to do in life, make sure it makes you happy. All the best!

Hi Class of 2012-16!Thank you for being such a great bunch of students ,and for not (nearly!) sleeping through my fashion Marketing/Branding classes. So it goes without saying that you guys were extremely focused, self motivated and dedicated students and it was a pleasure associating with you.
