POW/MIA honored at Bridges AcademyBy Bill [email protected]

Veterans from Elkin, Pilot Mountain, Mount Airy and Yadkin County VFW Posts presented a Veterans Day ceremony at Bridges Academy in State Road on Friday.

The program, beginning in the school’s

gymnasium and moving out to the front lawn, was a special POW/MIS (prisoner of war/missing in action) program, said Pete Knight, beggining the progam.

A table was set for those missing, with all of the items on the table being explained to the children. Veterans from each branch of service placed a hat from their branch

on an empty stool and turned on a candle to honor prisoners of war and service members missing in action.

At the end of the solemn ceremony, veterans and students moved outside where a battlefield cross had been erected as it is done when someone is killed in battle.

The flag was lowered to half mast, and

Paula Anderson of Wilkes County laid a wreath to recognize her brother, Army Sgt. Gerold Mounce, who was killed in Vietnam on Aug. 22, 1967.

Then seven veterans each fired three shots for a 21-gun salute.

Buddy Poppies distributedMembers of Captain

Mark Garner Elkin VFW Post 7794 and the post’s Auxiliary handed out Bud-dy Poppies at the Elkin Walmart store on Thurs-day, Friday and Saturday.

Story of the VFW Buddy Poppy

The Captain Mark Gar-ner Elkin VFW Post 7794 passed out the following information on Memo-rial Day, 2019, to explain the meaning of the Buddy Poppy.

“In Flanders Fields the poppies blow…”

Those are the opening words of Col. John Mc-Crae’s immortal poem ded-icated to the memory of the men and women who served, fought and died in

France during World War I, the poppies of which he wrote have become the true symbol of all those who have given their lives in our nation’s wars.

The Poppy has become recognized as the memo-rial flower in countries

throughout the world. It is distributed by veterans organizations in Europe, North America, and in most of the countries of the British Common-wealth.

Since 1922, the Veter-ans of Foreign Wars of the

United States has conduct-ed an annual distribution of Buddy Poppies to raise funds for its charitable programs on behalf of the needy and disabled veter-ans, and the surviving fam-ily members of deceased veterans.

Bill Colvard | The TribuneArmy veteran Sam Hodges gives a Buddy Poppy to a Walmart shopper on Saturday.
