The 2018-2019 WPOSC Board of Governors

THE WRIGHT WORD PAGE 3 August 2018

Welcome

Hello and howdy! Cassandra Picchi here, brand new President of the

Wright-Patterson Officers’ Spouses’ Club.

This month we begin yet another year with the traditional Welcome

Coffee and I can’t wait. If there’s one thing military spouses do more often

than just about anybody else, it’s welcome, and nobody else welcomes

quite like a military spouse. “It’s so lovely to meet you! Yes, I’d love to be

your emergency contact!” Bonds form fast and deep, and there’s always

room for a new friend or twelve.

This year, I find myself once again being the new girl and feeling a bit

lost as I learn a new area, shake the kinks out of a new house, and struggle

to understand the weather. As sometimes happens with a PCS, our house-

hold goods were unexpectedly delayed and the outpouring of support and

assistance from the spouse community here at Wright-Patt has been over-

whelming, to say the least. The kindness I’ve been shown has done justice

to the reputation of world-famous Midwestern Hospitality.

I find myself brimming with gratitude and eager for the Welcome Coffee on the 23rd. I’m primed and

ready to pass the warm welcome I’ve received on to others and I’m excited to see what this new year will

bring.

Come join me and revel in the unparalleled spirit of Welcome embodied by the members of the

Wright-Patterson Officers’ Spouses’ Club. Sign up for any of the many activities, or volunteer to serve

on the board. There are so many ways to get involved. I can’t wait to meet everyone!

It has been a busy summer working with our new President, Cassandra Picchi, and Cathy

Randolph, our new 2nd Vice President. We have met several times to organize and plan for the

upcoming WPOSC year. There are lots of great monthly meetings/social events being planned.

I can’t wait for the September 2018 social when we get together with all our new and returning

members.

Speaking of new and returning members…. the August 2018 Welcome Coffee & Activities

Sign Up is scheduled Thursday, August 23, 2018 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Wright Patter-

son USO. Monica Lewis has been holding planning meetings since May 2018 to prepare for the Welcome Coffee & Social.

It is going to be a great kick-off to our year, and I hope everyone will plan to attend. We have several Board of Governors

positions to fill including: Welfare Chair, Programs Chair, Reservations Chair and Scholarships Chair. There are also Chair

positions available for activities groups.

We are trying out the USO for our Welcome Coffee and appreciate the opportunity to hold the event there. We are excited

to see everyone soon.

1st VP Business:

This is just a reminder that if you have a key to the WPOSC Building 95/Activities Room that you no longer need, please

let me know so I can collect it from you. We have several people requesting keys to access their BoG mailbox.

Please remember that one of the benefits of WPOSC is use of the Activities Room for your activity group meetings. Just

be sure to email Activities Chair, Monica Lewis, dates for the scheduled meeting so the room schedule can be coordi-

nated.

Also, there are multiple items available for checkout to members including: six and 10 foot tables; appliances such as a

crock pot and kitchen aid mixer, stainless cutlery and dishes for special events. Use the sign out sheet on the fridge in

the Activities room to check out items and return items. Please do not check out six ft. tables or card tables on a date an

activity group is scheduled to meet. The calendar is posted on the activities room bulletin board.

For questions please email the [email protected]

Best Wishes for a great 2018 – 19 WPOSC year.

Meets every month at Chapel 3 in the Prairies Housing: 6568 Chapel Lane, Riverside, OH 45433-6003. Directions from Area B: Take Colonel Glenn Highway toward Airway Road; turn left at the “Speedway” traffic lights onto Spinning Road; turn right onto Chapel Lane and drive to the end.

On May 4th, we celebrated Mother's/Special Women's Day with a small de-

lightful presentation with chirping/whistling songs from our very own "bird

lady," Mary J!!! Our door prizes were flower arrangements of all sizes, shapes,

and colors.

Members voted for the 2018-19 ISG leadership positions. Congratulations to

Lori Enochian (USA) and Cheryl Lloyd (UK) as Co-chairs, and Inma Kusnierek

(Spain) as Chair.

The international Fair Income and Expenses report showed $4,234.00 in in-

come minus $3,639.20 in expenses, which leaves $594.20, including the $1,000

scholarship earmarked for

2019.

On June 1st, we gathered

to celebrate Father's Day. We gave an array of Father’s Day-themed door prizes,

including coffee table books, martini glasses, and handmade cards. We had a

presentation on Alzheimer's awareness, detailing resources for caregivers, symp-

toms, brain anatomy, food, exercises and more.

On July 6th, we met to celebrate summer time. Our program was painting

rocks. We all enjoyed the history behind painting rocks, and learning about the

recent trend of finding rocks and placing them in public places or your home. The

children and adults thoroughly enjoyed the experience and creativity. We said

farewell to Gavin from Australia as his family is transferring to the DC metro

area.

As always, we had delicious food and great friends to share these wonderful

moments!

All International and USA spouses are welcome to our meetings. Children and family are always welcome. We look forward to

seeing you August 3rd at 9:30 am. We'll be gathering at chapel 3 to learn tie-dying techniques. If you wish to participate in making

a t-shirt please bring a moist t-shirt to the coffee.

L to R: Sara Lowe, Martha Parker, Rose Miklasevich, Sandra Moore, Cynthia Brubaker, and Sue Craven

We are a very unique volunteer group to be found

nowhere else in the Air Force. Hours are flexible and

vary according to your schedule. On average, we work

2 ½ hours in the morning during the school year. Dur-

ing this time, you are walking and talking and even ex-

ercising without realizing it.

Training is painless and fun! You can train with a

group or on an individual basis. Either way, you soon

become a part of a great group of guides.

You do not need to know the entire area of the museum, but

can focus on areas you feel comfortable making part of the

tour you develop for school groups from 3rd to 12th grade.

No sweat, easy!

The best part? The friendships we form while doing

something we love. We meet on the fourth Thursday

morning of every month during the school year for edu-

cation and training. Come join us!

Hello!

As we start a new year together, I am excited about my new role as your 2nd Vice

President. I remember my time in previous Spouses' clubs as being fun social gather-

ings, making new friendships, and trying new activities, some of which were fleeting

and others that are dear to my heart to this day. At those other bases, I often heard ref-

erences to the WPOSC; our history, our commitment to tradition. I remember being a

member of a Wives' Club as they discussed the possibility of changing to a Spouses'

Club to be more inclusive in our changing world. Some were against it, claiming that

they saw no reason to go against the tradition of being a Wives' club for just a few

men. I will never forget hearing one woman say, “the Wright-Patterson Club is a

Spouses' Club. If they can see the good in changing tradition to be more inclusive, so

can we”. We are a group of women and men who value tradition while also being willing to innovate and

change when the traditions no longer represent who we are: A strong group of military spouses who value our

community, our way of life, who after countless PCS’s, changing schools, neighbors, doctors and dentists,

know that while a strong system of doing things makes life easier, sometimes the system has to be tweaked to

make life better. This is a group who not only welcomes the young and new members of our base (after all,

we’ve all been the new kid on the block), but values the innovations and change young minds can bring while

maintaining the traditions that have served us so well in the past. A group that Spouses' Clubs around the world

can look to when faced with changes or difficulties of their own. I am honored to be a part of this fantastic

group. If you have thoughts or insights you would like to share with me throughout the year, please do! While I

don't expect any big changes in our year, I'm proud to know that as a group we can embrace some small

"tradition tweaks", like gathering together at a different location for our luncheons. After all, it's not where

friends gather that's important, it's the being together that means the most. I look forward to a great year, con-

tinuing friendships and making new ones, while working to keep our club fun, interesting, and inspiring for

everyone.

Sincerely, Cathy Randolph , 2nd VP

One OSC goal is to promote morale, goodwill, and fellowship among our membership through socials and special activities sure to appeal to a wide range of interests. However, we are always looking for new and fresh ideas; so if you have a hobby or skill that others might like to try as well, make a suggestion to the Activities Chair (from list on page 2).
