OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN IPThis award is presented to Jiang Zhipei, former chief justiceof the Intellectual Property Chamber of the Supreme People’sCourt of China. In addition to his pioneering work as ajudge, which involved helping to set up the Supreme Court’sIP tribunal, Jiang has worked tirelessly to raise IP awarenesswithin China and to help foreigners to understand the coun-try’s IP system. He created and maintained a bilingual web-site called China IPR Law.com that is one of the most usefulresources on IP in China. A native of Beijing, Jiang was thefocus of a profile by the New York Times in 2005 thatdescribed him as “an extrovert” for his willingness to speakopenly and to give tours of the country’s Supreme Court. Hehas spoken at hundreds of events, both in China and alsointernationally – from Stanford Law School to Singapore. Now of counsel at Fangda Partners, Jiang is the Vice
President of the IPR Association of China Law Society,Deputy Managing Director of China Copyright Associationand Vice President of AIPPI’s China Branch.

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN IPPeter Messerli is vice-president of the European PatentOffice and president of the Boards of Appeal. In this roleMr Messerli has been at the heart of patent law develop-ments in Europe, managing the workload of the EPOBoards of Appeal and chairing the Enlarged Board, whichhas played an increasingly visible role in developing the lawon issues such as Swiss-style claims, dosage regimens, stemcells, surgical methods, divisional applications and ofcourse computer-implemented inventions.Mr Messerli has been in his role for 15 years, having previ-
ously held a senior role in the Swiss Federal IP Institute, andwill retire from the EPO later this year. During his term thedecisions of the Boards of Appeal have become highly regard-ed by European practitioners and courts. In many cases theyhave helped to harmonise issues where there has been confu-sion or differing interpretations. His leadership and manage-ment of the Boards has been widely applauded and we aredelighted to present this award to him this evening.
Peter Messerli,
European Patent Office
IN-HOUSE TEAM OF THE YEARWINNER: ARMARM has become one of the foremost players in thesemiconductor industry thanks largely to its innovativebusiness model, which hinges on the licensing of its valuableintellectual property to manufacturing partners. ARM receivesa licence fee for the IP and a royalty on every chip or waferproduced – more than 15 billion of them to date. Itmanufactures nothing itself, yet it is likely that everyone inthis room has used a device incorporating ARM designs atsome point. While this has been a visionary business strategy, like all
strategies it requires hard work and skill on the part of thosewho implement it. This includes the writing and prosecutionof patents; the willingness to defend rights in court whennecessary; and the drafting and maintenance of literally hundreds of licence agreements.ARM’s success in the semiconductor industry has been in
great part due to the quality of its IP rights and its creativityin exploiting them and we are pleased to recognise the teamthat has been instrumental in that process tonight.
EUROPE – TRADE MARKS WINNER: BAKER & MCKENZIEBaker & McKenzie has built up an impressive practicethroughout the continent, particularly in rapidly developingmarkets such as Poland and Russia.
