One of my objectives for our club has been to increase our collaboration with other NCCC Corvette clubs

in sponsoring events that are both fun and beneficial to our communities. Another of my objectives has

been to strengthen our partnership with Lincoln Technical Institute (LTI). As I mentioned in last month’s

newsletter, we are working with LTI and the Northern Virginia Corvette Club (NVCC) to sponsor a Teen

Driving School. NVCC has a lot of experience putting on these events and they are working with us and

LTI to organize an Instructors Clinic to train instructors to teach the driving school. The Instructors Clinic

will be conducted on Saturday, April 13th at Lincoln Tech in Columbia, MD. If there is enough interest

and participation among our members for this event, then we will consider putting on a full blown Teen

Driving School in the fall of this year. We have almost two dozen people who have signed up to support

this event so far. If you are interested in becoming an instructor or supporting this event in some other ca-

pacity, please contact Pat Roney directly at ([email protected] or 240-506-6283). Please look at the

flyer immediately following this article.

Corvette rAMBLINGS

The Editor’s Corner– Jon Thorn

Well, it finally looks like Spring is here. We can put

the snow plows away and speaking of plows here is

a photo that I got from Mike Yager at Mid America

Motorworks. It shows that old Corvettes never die

they just end up with very strange second lives.

On Sunday I had an opportunity to attend a baptism

for the daughter of one of my Impala club members.

It was a truly beautiful day and was another indica-

tion that winter is finally over. It gave me an excel-

lent excuse to get my second favorite Chevy product

out of the garage and on the road where it belongs.

It was nice to hear the rumble of the LT1 again

along with the gentle whine of the Paxton blower. I

was happy to see that it started instantly after sitting

under a cover for six months and I am sure it was

good to burn some of the old gas out of the tank and

circulate the oil. It was kind of a shock though to

relearn the pedal pressure of the twin-disk McLeod

clutch. All 94 to 96 Impalas were automatics but I

converted this one with a Tremec 6-speed that was

spec’d for a Dodge Viper. It was a lot of fun having

the car out in the sunshine again.

Be sure to check out Ron Hamrah’s article this month. The June cruise to the NCM now has 26 folks in-

terested in joining us on what promises to be a great trip to Bowling Green followed by a cruise to the

Asheville area for a drive on the Tail of the Dragon and a tour of the famous Biltmore Estate. If you

would like to investigate riding along with us please check with Ron quickly. We will be working on the

final trip plans very soon.

Now that things are warming up be sure to come out and support your CCA. We have both a Teen Driv-

ing School and an Autocross weekend coming up. Check out the details in this issue of the Courier and

show up to support the club!

Save the wave!

Competition Report

We had some CCA members head to VIR and Summit Point this month. Please check out Pat’s

article on these events.

Our first autocross event on 20/21 April is in just a couple weeks. Another email will be sent out

to club members requesting volunteers to work at the event. Please volunteer to ensure our first

event is a success. You can also register for this and all the other autocross events by visiting the

CCA home page and clicking on the AutoX Register button in the left hand menu.

I would like to thank Rick Roe for all of his creativity and hard work in getting the autocross reg-

istration page online. As you will see when you visit the page it is much easier to register than the

page we used in the past. With Rick working the registration page, the work on the CCA compe-

tition web page was delayed. We should have it up soon. This page will have lots of information

on HPDE and autocross, including a calendar of events and links to the many venues and organi-

zations that sponsor events. An email will be sent to members when the page goes live.

More High Performance Drivers Education during the month of March.

By Pat Roney

March started out great with 5 days on track between March 2nd and 10th. I reported on the March 2nd

and 3rd Chin Motorsports event at Virginia International Raceway in last month’s newsletter. I did

find one picture of our group relaxing at the Oak Tree Tavern at VIR during that Chin event.

We also had fun at the Summit Point Friday At The Track (FATT) March 8th where I worked with a

friend from the NVCC with his Lingenfelter C6 Corvette ZR1. That was a wild beast to tame with

over 700 hp to the wheels. We were easily up to 160mph with a lot of track left when he let up. For

the most part we kept the speed at a more reasonable level and worked on the more technical parts of

the course. The brakes and suspension were outstanding.

March 9th and 10th I worked with fellow CCA’er Louie D. at a SCCA event at Summit Point. This

was Louie’s 3rd and 4th day on track and after a shaky start with his car acting up on grid and having

to pit and fix the problem, we had a great weekend. This was also Louie’s first time at Summit Point

so we had to learn the track line first. As usual, we started out very slow working on the technical

parts of the course, getting line and smoothness down. Louie did a great job driving and learning the

course which showed as he led the pack start to finish and lapping some of the cars in the last couple

of sessions. Good job Louie.

Page 9: The World’s First Corvette ClubCOLUMBIA, MD 21046 FROM THE NORTH OR SOUTH From Route I-95 Take exit 38B from Rte. 32 heading west towards Columbia. Take next exit 14 for Brokenland

The Corvette Courier April 2013 Page 9

Below is Louie between myself and Dave DuBois, NVCC.

We have plenty more events coming up that CCA members are participating in over the next few

months. April 26th Summit Point FATT will see fellow member Art B. joining us along with Pat S.

from the Old Dominion Corvette Club. April 27th and 28th we have 7 CCA’ers signed up already with

the NASA event at Summit Point. I look forward to working with Louie again at that event. May 20 th

and 21st we have 10 signed up so far for a trip to Watkins Glen with Chin Motorsports and 17 of us

have already signed up for the National Corvette Museum HPDE at VIR. That is always a great

event.

There are a lot of other events over the next few months that a few of us will be attending including a

May 18th TrackDaze HPDE at Summit Point where Veronica Johnson of the NBC network will be do-

ing an article on how HPDE events help to make you a better driver on the road. She will be inter-

viewing myself and several other drivers as well as TrackDaze management on this subject.

As always, we love to talk about tracking events. If you have any questions or would just like to hear

what we do, just ask one of us.

I would like to thank my two best buddies, Rich and Gary, for helping me set up the course for the In-

structors Clinic for the Teen Driving School.

Upcoming Events

We have added an additional autocross event this year for a total of five. These autocross events are

planned starting in April including five Autocross Primer classes for beginners. The schedule is shown

later in this report.

For the road racers, there will be group participation in many High Performance Drivers Events

(HPDEs) at tracks such as VIR, Summit Point, Watkins Glen, New Jersey Motorsports Park and

maybe even Sebring or Road Atlanta. You are put into groups, depending on your level of experi-

ence and driving skill, and instructors are provided to ride along with you. This is a great way to learn

how to get the most out of your car in a safe and controlled environment. These events combine class-

room time with track time to teach both the theory and physical control aspects of high speed driving.

Note that The National Corvette Museum (NCM) is again sponsoring an HPDE at VIR that has been

confirmed for June 24th and 25th. Another couple of major events are the Baltimore Grand Prix on

Aug 30th and 31st and ALMS at VIR on Oct 3 thru 5. Both of these are major events on the ALMS

racing calendar and were very successful last year

This exciting season is underway. Please contact me if you have an interest in driving your car in a

competitive event.

The Corvette Courier is published monthly by the Corvette Club of America, Inc.

P.O. Box 3355, Gaithersburg, Maryland 20885

The Corvette Club of America, Inc was founded by John Ralph and Charles Eyre who organized the

first club meeting on July 17, 1956 at a Chevrolet dealership in Arlington, Virginia. At that time the

club charter was formulated and a tentative club name, ‘Capital Corvette Club’ was taken under con-

sideration. At a subsequent meeting in September 1956, however, the club name was changed to the

Corvette Club of America since it was the intent of the members to make the club a national organiza-

tion.

In the months that followed, the Corvette Club

of America took the first steps toward forming a

national organization by laying the ground work

for the National Council of Corvette Clubs, a

group which now includes 262 clubs with more

than 17,500 members. The Corvette Club of

America is a proud member of the East Region

of the NCCC. As one of the founding clubs of

the National Council of Corvette Clubs the CCA

is honored to have been assigned club number 1

in the organization.

Through the years the CCA has seen many fine

members come and go; however, one thing re-

mains unchanged. The membership is composed

of individuals both male and female, young and

old, that share a common interest - The Corvette!
