29 March – 4 April 2012 Brisbane, Australia

Welcome to Moreton Bay Boys’ College and the 2012 World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships.

I am delighted to welcome you not just to the College, but also to Brisbane, to Queensland, where it is indeed beautiful one day and perfect the next (despite the occasional flood or cyclone) and of course to Australia, the land ‘down under’. As you can see, this is a beautiful campus – one that hosts a rare and endangered orchid - and a lovely setting on the hillside overlooking the sand islands of Moreton Bay.

Moreton Bay Boys’ College was founded in 2003, and as an International Baccalaureate school, is committed to helping young men become successful productive global citizens. Knowledge and respect for other cultures, the capacity to see the other point of view and the ability to develop relationships and understanding through global communication are all key qualities in being a responsible and inclusive global citizen. It is wonderful through your presence to have the while world come to our door.

I extend a warm welcome to each of you, on behalf of the college and its community. We look forward to spending time with you so that we can learn from each other, progress the cause of effective speaking and create lasting memories of what we expect to be a great occasion.

The World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships 2012

Dear Guests:

I offer a warm welcome to all our visitors to the 2012 World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships. I am delighted that you can spend some time with us and that you have the opportunity to experience some of our wonderful country.

Moreton Bay Boys’ College is proud and honoured to play host again to this prestigious event. Our college was established in 2003 and has been built on the foundations of research, reason and relationships. To me, the WIDPS championships provide tangible evidence of the importance of these qualities.

As an International Baccalaureate school we are committed to helping our young men to become successful global citizens so we look forward to the opportunity to learn from each other and to cement our global connections.

I wish every competitor the best of success. I am looking forward to being entertained, challenged, inspired and amazed by the talented young men and women who will be competing over the next few days.

Events like this don’t just happen without a great deal of organisation and preparation. I especially want to thank Ms Naomi Williams and her hard working committee for all their efforts in bringing these championships to fruition. They have been well supported by the entire MBBC and MBC communities, for which I am grateful.

So, enjoy the championships and your time in Brisbane and Australia. I hope that through these championships you make new friends, learn more about yourselves and return home with memories that might last a life time.

29 March – 4 April 2012 Brisbane, Australia

Dear WIDPSC Friends,

The indigenous people of this great land founded a culture rich with stories, songs and dance. Their stories and songs were carried from tribe to tribe through 600 clans who all shared a unique relationship with the land and everything in it. It is hard to say how far and for how long these stories travelled in the course of time over the Australian continent, but it is here that the great storytelling tradition of Australia began - with the passionate sharing of heart-felt wisdom.

D.H. Lawrence said, Be still when you have nothing to say: when genuine passion moves you, say what you’ve got to say, and say it hot. This is what I love about Worlds – you all speak genuinely with regard to subjects about which you are passionate. You deliver them in an eloquent, articulate and fervent manner. You use your heads to capture our hearts and boy does the debate get heated sometimes! Your ability to communicate and gain recognition and respect for your ideas and opinions is important. You have a voice and this is only one forum in which to make it heard. This week, whatever you have to say; say it loud and say it hot!

In a day and age when everyone has an opinion; when everyone has a ‘social forum’ through which to voice that opinion what this [world] needs is more free speech worth listening to. (Henry Brooks Adams) What you do here at Worlds is cut through the useless chatter and deliver relevant messages about our world and the human condition. Our world is rich with cultural diversity; however, it is also full to the brim with social, cultural and environmental problems. It is your ability to communicate these issues with generosity, kindness and respect for each other’s human dignity that makes Worlds such a valuable and enlightening experience for all. Every year you help us see the problem, you encourage us to feel it with our hearts, to allow us to hear the plight of the less fortunate and, sometimes…more importantly, you provoke us to laugh at ourselves. What [you] say is important…for in most cases the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. (Jim Beggs) Your task this week is to fervently and yet respectfully, debate your thoughts and ideas with your international peers; to form friendships; and take home a greater understanding of the world and of each other.

It has taken many months to pull together WIDPSC 2012 and deliver you a Worlds that is comparable to the we staged for you in 2011. I can not believe that the day has finally arrived. My hard work is done – yours is but to begin. So it is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships of 2012. May your Australian experience be everything that you thought it would be.

As George Washington said …you can not restrain the voices of the multitude and so I hand it over to you. This is your event, make it fabulous and enjoy every moment of your days in Brisbane, at Moreton Bay Boys’ College, at the 25th WIDPSC. I will not wish you luck; you already have what it takes to succeed.

Yours truly,

Naomi Williams
