Page 1: The work we’re doing will not be added to Drupal 7, but ... · TECHNOLOGY: Drupal 8 is not replacing Drupal 7; sites in Drupal 7 do not need to make plans to immediately move to

1

2

The work wersquore doing will not be added to Drupal 7 but units can do that themselves if they choose

3

We all know from our own experience that itrsquo s easier to use a website that has a consistent design and behaviors

A few months ago we did usability to test our belief that our website visitors would prefer consistency in their experience at the U Participants were shown a number of screenshots of web pages from the Twin Cities campus mixed in with screenshots from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln They overwhelmingly preferred the consistency they saw in the UNL pages Here are some of the comments they made

4

In fiscal years 2014 to 2016 the University spent over 2 million dollars on outside design and development work just for Drupal sites and that number is probably low

5

ACCESSIBILITY Work being done by accessibility stakeholder group Recent complaint against the University for inaccessible sites

TECHNOLOGY Drupal 8 is not replacing Drupal 7 sites in Drupal 7 do not need to make plans to immediately move to Drupal 8

6

WEB THEMEmdashthose of you who used Drupal would have seen the original base theme that was developed when we got into Drupal What wersquore creating is similar to that but more comprehensive

MODULAR COMPONENTSmdashwersquore working on a list of components that wersquoll share for your input The list of components will include all the basics and things that are commonly used around the University like hero images

MODULAR THEME COMPONENTSmdashbecause these components are configured individually you can grab what you need and use it where you need it

7

8

We have two info sessions to introduce this project to the University During the project as well as after we will continue to communicate about the status of the theme

Our core UR and OIT teams are working together to design and develop components There will be a period of time that will be open for input from the campus community for each component

The theme team will be made up of the project partners in URand OIT along with 3 designers 3 developers and 3 communicators from across the campus We will also have representation from the DRC to help ensure our theme is accessible

9

PATTERN LIBRARYmdashWe will share a link to the Pattern Library thatrsquos being developed to house the theme components You will be able to examine the individual components there and send your comments and feedback to the web theme team The pattern library will be the location for the finalized components It will display the individual components and their HTML

FOLWELLmdashA new website is being developed to showcase the theme and the guidelines for using it This website will be the place to find any information related to the theme as we develop it and as we implement it

10

We will be using a pattern library to display the various components associated with the theme Many companies and universities use some form of a pattern library for their sites Here are a few examples

11

12

No firm timeline for completion of all the components A component list is still being developed and will be shared for input on folwellumnedu Components will be made available as they are finalized Once initial componentsmdashfonts colors navigation and unit brandingmdashare determined development of all other components should go fairly quickly

Some components will need usability testing such as navigation All components will undergo accessibility testing

13

A more complete timeline is available on folwell and will be updated as needed
