Message from the Principals,
The vernal (spring) equinox (equal night), daylight savings time, 1st
day of spring, how does one keep ahead in this world?
As we move into the Smarter Balanced Assessment window, I
would like to remind parents and guardians this year’s state test is
twofold. First, it is the year for the state to collect data with re-
gards to setting standards. Secondly, it allows districts and build-
ings to proctor the exam and identify needs/adjustments for next
year. Also, the state department will not be sharing results and
data with districts this year (there are no standards to compare
them to).
Testing can be a long and arduous task. Your teachers have pre-
pared your students with the knowledge and practice with com-
puter adaptive tests. We ask that you too help them by ensuring
they are well rested, hydrated, and nourished. Test preparedness
is the key to success!
As the weather gets warmer, we are expecting that students go
outside after lunch. The fresh air and exercise does us all well.
Please help us by reminding your students to take their coats to
lunch as they will be expected to go outside when finished eating.
We don’t allow students to return to their lockers during lunch time
(no supervision in the halls) for coats.
Have a safe and enjoyable Spring Break!

Last year Coeur d’Alene’s Mayor granted a Proclamation estab-
lishing May 1st as "Choose Love Over Fear" day which will be celebrated again on Thursday, May 1, 2014 at the Hu-
man Rights Education Institute, Mullan Ave. CdA from 6 to 8 pm; children and their families are invited to attend.
This free event is open to the public and refreshments will be served. Speakers will include Mayor Steve Widmyer, Father
Bell from the Episcopalian Church, Tony Stewart from the Kootenai County Task Force on Human Relations, and
a representative from our City’s Police Department.
This event parallels the current efforts being made by our
school district and its focus on eradicating bullying in our schools. The creation of "respect clubs" within the District’s
middle and high schools are good examples of the intent of the proclamation which is: "To create opportunities that create and
celebrate individual and collective humanitarian efforts to pro-mote love over fear." May 1, 2014 is a day for random acts of
kindness and all citizens are invited to observe this day.
**Woodland is looking for a sponsor(s) to help fund our 2014-2015 Student
Agendas. Your business would be advertised on the back cover of each stu-
dent’s agenda. We would like to open this opportunity to our Woodland
community first. If your business is interested, please contact Mr. Serwat
at (208) 667-5996 for more details.
Did you know that nearly 43% of kids have been bullied online and 1 in 4 kids have had it hap-
pen more than once? Only 1 in 10 victims will inform a parent or trusted adult of their abuse
and bullying victims are 2 to 9 times more likely to consider committing suicide. Cyber Bully-
ing is a serious problem.
Come to Woodland for some pizza and a presentation with Jennifer Ramb, Teen Education and
Outreach Coordinator from the North Idaho Violence Prevention Center. She will let you
know how to protect your child and family on the Internet and how to prevent and handle any
cyber bullying your child might be exposed to. Some topics she will cover are:
Textual Harassment
Sexting
Cyberbullying & Social Media Misuse
Digital Safety
When: Tuesday, April 8
5:00-7:00 p.m.
Where: Woodland Cafeteria
Please RSVP to [email protected] so we know how much pizza
to order!

The Yearbook class at Woodland will be creating a presentation of all of our 8th graders that will be shown
at the end of the year celebration. Please send in a picture of your 8th grader as a baby/toddler and a cur-
rent picture of your child. If you have digital pictures, please email them as attachments with your child’s
first and last name in the email subject bar to: [email protected]. If you do not have digital pictures,
bring your pictures to the office in an envelope with your child’s name on it with their Advisory Teach-
er’s name and they will be returned to your child after they have been scanned. Please have your pic-
tures turned in before Friday, May 16.

purchased a yearbook for your child, you
will want to do it before they are sold out.
Yearbooks are $25.00 and can be pur-

PTA NEWS [email protected]
Welcome back to another edition of PTA News. It feels like I just wrote the last one, so you know what
that means?... April's News will be a flash! Did someone say, “SPRING BREAK?” Eleven consecutive
days of NO SCHOOL - WOO HOO! ENJOY EVERY MINUTE OF IT! :o)
Spring Break is a reminder that the end of the school year is quickly approaching. Which means our 8th
graders will graduate from Middle School and move on to High School! WOW! So, 8th grade parents, you
know what that means right? You said it, it's time to CELEBRATE! So get out your calenders and SAVE
these DATES: June 5, 2014 - 8th Grade Celebration AND June 6, 2014 - 8th Grade Cruise. More details
to come in the days ahead!
By the way! All teens enjoy seeing themselves in print and love giving autographs to their peeps! So,
don't forget to purchase those yearbooks while supplies last! The cost is $25 – see Debbie!
Also, I am excited to announce the PTA board candidates for the 2014-15 school year: President – Dio-
ne Froderberg, Vice President – Jenny Duncan, Treasurer – Heidi Reasor, and Secretary – Robin Duvall.
PTA Members please join us on April 9th to cast your votes, and if you're not a member it's not too late to
join! For only $5.00 YOU can become a PTA member! I bet you're thinking, “Why would I want to join
PTA (Parent Teacher Association)?” Good question! The number one reason to join PTA is TO BENEFIT
YOUR CHILD. Research shows that kids do better when parents are involved. Grades are higher, test
scores improve, and attendance increases. “The overall purpose of PTA is to make every child’s potential
a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children.”
ATTENTION Jamba Juicers!! On the LAST Wednesday of each month we will FEATURE a SURPRISE FLAVOR! We will announce the flavor a day or two prior to Wednesday during morning announcements so students can come ready to try the cool and refreshing new FLAVOR! Yeah!
That's the news flash for April! :o)
LOOK HERE FOR DATES TO REMEMBER :o)

“Smart Snacks for Smart Kids”
Most of us are aware of the importance of eating three healthy meals per day, but do you know that snacking is important
too? Students today tend to be on the go between school, sports, clubs, and music programs. In order to perform your best,
you need to keep your body and mind fueled. Don’t just grab the first thing you see on the convenience store shelf; choose a
snack that provides some carbohydrate, fiber, and protein. By opting to choose nutritionally dense foods rather than snacks
that are simply empty calories (meaning they have no real nutritional value from vitamins and minerals) we can get a higher
and more sustained burst of energy. So before you hit the field for softball practice, the greens for golf, or debate team prac-
tice, grab yourself a healthy snack. Some great choices are a small whole wheat bagel with cream cheese, banana with peanut
butter, or a whole grain pita with hummus. To learn more about nutrition for your family, see the “Nutrition Links that we Like”
on the Nutrition Services homepage at www.cdaschools.org.
