The CATERER plays an important in the success or failure of any wedding.

A is for ARRANGEMENTS. This is a catch-all word that covers almost everything to do with a wedding as in “Have you made the ARRANGEMENTS?”. This could mean fixing up transport, picking up guests, checking out venues, working out themes for different events, arranging invite accompaniments, getting the trousseau packed…

A is also for ACCOMPANIMENT options to go with the invitation. Since, in keeping with Indian tradition, you cannot go empty-handed (khaali haath) with the invitation, the ACCOMPANIMENT is a must and sets the tone and flavour of the upcoming event. To further complicate matters, the ACCOMPANIMENTS – yes, it could be more than one – could be edible, or non-edible. Edible might be fancy mithai, for example, or exotic nuts. Non-edible may well be photo-frames in silver. The one common thread between the two types of ACCOMPANIMENTS is elaborate packaging. So much so, that the packaging, often, looks far richer that what it contains.

B is for BARAAT. The BARAAT procession is the public statement that the groom's side makes. A logistical exercise, it may entail, a) working out a theme for all the baraatis to dress to, b) planning who goes in which vehicle, c) arranging the right music at the right time, and, d) ensuring that the groom's transport, whether animal-powered or otherwise, does not get stuck anywhere on the way.

B is also for BARTENDER, the new fixture in weddings of class. If the celebrations are really upscale the BARTENDER will have to be someone special. And, this may mean locating one abroad and making all arrangements to get him or her to the country, including all the paperwork involved, the costs being extra, of course. Whether local or foreign, the BARTENDER also has to slosh together some new cocktails (and, mocktails) for the special occasion. After all, what's the point if the same old Screwdrivers and Bras Monkeys are dished out when no expense has been spared in getting the BARTENDER? If you cannot get a foreign BARTENDER then try and get a FLAIR BARTENDER who will, at least, keep guests entertained with his (or, her) jugglery with bar tools and bottles.

C is for CATERER. If the wedding is run-of-the-mill then there is no point reading all this and any CATERER will do. However, if it has to be a 'they-must-always-remember' affair then you have to get creative and think, not only of concepts but also, who will execute them. This, of course, is easier said than done. And, when each event of the wedding has to have something totally different, and varied, you have a task on your hands, to say the least.

C is also for CHANEY KI DAAL, (split gram in English) that makes the mare go. Okay, mare or stallion, the horse or ghori does not move until the sisters have fed it CHANEY KI DAAL. The tray from which the horse is fed is no ordinary item; it has to be decorated and, if it is one of those 'make a statement' kind of weddings, the tray itself could be silver or some such not-so-ordinary material.
