Explore the wonderful world of whales with local marine biologist Dr Alexandra Campbell as we move closer to the seasonal whale migration in May. Hear about the whale species you’ll be seeing along our unique coastline and learn and hear their special whale songs. You’ll craft a whale and share your favourite whale tales. There’s great ocean prizes to WIN! Light refreshments are provided. Get ready to get wet (and smelly!) with marine biologist Vanessa Guillermo.

Under the Sea showcases the incredible animals that live under the waves and on our shores. We’ll investigate habitats and learn how sea animals adapt to the changing environment. Children can hold and touch a large range of marine animals, specimen samples and a variety of marine artefacts and shells.

Focusing in on the world of mini beasts, we delve into the secret lives of our often well camouflaged backyard bugs. We’ll find out their amazing abilities and the role they play in the environment. The show is totally interactive, allowing children to hold and touch many different bugs in a safe and exciting way. So get ready for a lot of laughing and screaming!

Rockpool ramble – South MaroubraTime: 12.30pm - 2.30pm Cost: $5 per person Age: 5 yrs and above

Discover the rarely seen marine animals of the South Maroubra rock platforms and inter-tidal zone. As the ocean retreats it leaves an abundant array of sea creatures on display which our marine biologists will identify and discuss; helping us learn how to minimise our impacts on these fragile beings.

Wear closed-in shoes, sunhat, long sleeve top and water bottle (no thongs). Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Adults accompanying children need to pay for the activity.

Bushcare at Wylies Baths Time: 9.30am - 11.30am Cost: $5 per person Age: 8 yrs and above

Join our local friendly Bushcare group who are helping restore the natural environment at this popular Coogee swimming location. Our expert horticulturists will help you discover the unique plant species that grow in this area. You’ll find out about the local fauna, identify native and non-native species and learn how to collect seeds for propagation. Best of all, you’ll meet a whole new group of dedicated and bush-caring friends.

Included: your Bushcare kit - hat, gloves & natural insect repellent. Morning tea provided.

Dr Rip’s science of the surf talk (with dye release rip identification demonstration)Time: 12.00pm - 1.30pm Cost: $5 per person Age: 8 yrs and above

Are you interested in how beaches work? Do you know how to spot rip currents and how to get out of one? Do you know how waves form and break? What’s a safe wave and an unsafe wave? Why are some beaches safer than others? How will your beach be affected by climate change? Why is rock fishing the most dangerous sport in Australia?

Keep safe in the surf in the surf and understand your favourite beach better by learning how to “read” the conditions of the beach and surf by attending this informative and entertaining presentation.
