The Woman’s Way
Fuquay-Varina Woman’s Club OCTOBER 2015
The president’s key notes
It was so good seeing everyone at our first meeting! We started this club year off with a great attendance,
some new faces, and a game we played about reporting. The officers treated you to some healthy food
items in which to dip into a chocolate fountain. Tammie Stagnitta, Fran Price, and Anna Campbell were
voted on to serve as the nomination committee that will put our slate of officers together for 2016-
2018. Wrapping the meeting up was the reports of all your CSP chairman reporting on what plans they
have for our club!
As I write this, it is raining yet again, and the threat of more rain, even a hurricane is on the horizon. My
outdoor plans for the weekend have already been canceled. It started me thinking...what can I do while I
am shut in this weekend? So, here goes my thoughts:
Catch up on my Woman's Club activities and
write them down on the new report form handed out
at the last meeting.
Catch up on the laundry...you know, the little bits
and pieces that need to be done separately.
Send in my registration for the
District VI Fall Meeting to be held in Durham on
October 17th.
Finish the fall wreath I started a month ago, and
hang it on my front door.
Browse through the new GFWC website.
Clean out all the closets...ok...at least one
Start writing a piece of literature for the local
Arts Festival, remembering the deadline is
December 15th.
Make a pot of homemade vegetable soup, and
yes, maybe even chili!
Put on my calendar to make my mammogram
appointment, after all, October is Breast Cancer
Awareness Month.
Shop at Pass it On ...in memory of those affected
by domestic violence.
Read a book, to celebrate National Book Month.
Watch football, football, football....
Enough already, I'm exhausted thinking about all the possibilities. So much to do, so little time to get it
done! Maybe I'll need the entire month of October...

CLUB news
Reporting • First Vice-President: Patty Byrne
Last meeting you were provided forms for the many activities you do for the state, town, and Woman's Club. Please, fill out these forms and bring them to the meeting in October or November. Then you can email me, [email protected] for the other items that you want to fill out for the months of November - January. You are awesome members and do much for this club! Our tallying goes from February to January, 2016. Thanks! Also sell one thing of flowers to keep or give away. You pay no postage and write the check to the Woman's Club. I must have the orders by Oct. 14th. If you do not have a catalog, they are in the gazebo at 333 S. Main St. where I live at a B&B. This is just down from Beef O'Brady's Restaurant. We are not having the Christmas Open House so we need to sell flowers. From my experience the tulips
are awesome! Thank you for all you do!
Keep us, oh God, from pettiness: Let us be large in thought, in word, in deed.
Ways &Means • Second Vice-President: Barbara Kennedy Bring orders for Flower Power to next meeting. Jewelry party is scheduled for November 21st from 3-5:00 at Ashley's Art Gallery. Also, don't forget the Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, October 24th from 8-10:00 at Applebees.
JEWELRY FUNDRAISER • Pam Booker
Ladies, we will be having a Park Lane Jewelry Fundraiser on Saturday, November 21st, the place will be at Ashley's Art Gallery on Main Street and the time will be from 3-5pm. Plenty of time to shop and still time to go out to dinner!
Park Lane will give / donate 50% of total sales to our club one week after I submit the order. There will be no sales tax and I believe a $6.50 charge for each order to cover shipping and handling...so this is a great deal!
I hope to have the fundraiser forms at our October meeting so consider taking one and getting outside orders. Barb and I can show you how, and every little bit will help. You can turn in these outside orders to me at our November General meeting on November 9th, and we can see how we are doing before the actual event on the 21st.
Membership • Third Vice-President: Martha
Smallwood
I'm delighted that we had visitors this month: Gloria Boone, Lauren Morton. A returning guest Susan Chamberlain third time, she painted our club house picture A sheet of heart stickers was given to all the summer and September members. The game this month was won by Patty Byrne, she had green on.
Let us be done with fault-finding and leave off self-seeking.
Yearbook • Corresponding Secretary: Tammie Stagnitta
For those who have recently joined the club, Fran Price will be back with her
camera to take photos for the yearbook. Get ready to give your best pose at
the October meeting!
May we put away all pretense and meet each other face to face, without self-pity and without prejudice.
Social Committee • Pam Booker Our Christmas Social will be held at the Garden Hut on Monday, December 14th from 6:30 - 8:30. A little different than previous years as we will not progress on to a dinner but instead have 4 -5 heavy hors devours , wine, beer, cider and desserts, and staying at the Garden Hut. During that time you can socialize, Christmas shop, AND, we will be giving out door prizes throughout the evening, should be fun! Afterwards, Jeanne and Ed Ridpath are opening up their home again and everyone is welcome as she will have coffee, cookies and a music sing-a-long with Christopher Reed. There will be a cost per person but that has not been determined yet. Will have more info on cost at the October meeting. We will need an estimated count and money started by the November meeting.
House & Grounds• Shirley Simmons
The Clubhouse has been painted! We are still awaiting the replacement and repainting of the sign over the door which had rotten portions. Paul Weiss Painting cleaned up the grounds and returned everything to place, including the wreath on the door! HELP TO PAY for the painting! Support the scouts working with our club. Plan to bring your family and friends to breakfast on Oct 24th at Applebeeʼs. SELL TICKETS for $7 with $3 going into the clubhouse funds.
$3 of each $7 ticket goes to the Fuquay-
Varina Woman’s Club. Thank you for your
support!!
Arts • Chair: Anna Campbell
Calling all club members to share their fun,
reflective and/or uplifting poetry and short
story entries with us prior to December 5,
2015. Please let me know if you would like a copy of this year’s
literature contest guidelines and entry information. I will be
more than happy to email it to you or print you out a copy.
I have been hearing from several club members about all of the fun and exciting arts and crafts entries
everyone will be submitting! Please also remember that we also have photography and many more fun
categories as well!! Our arts entries will be due by January 11th, you have plenty of time!
We will have a sign-up sheet available at our meeting for everyone who is excited about helping during set-
up and tear-down during our upcoming Arts Festival. The families, children, club members, and community
members had the greatest time last year viewing how amazingly talented our community is! We received
awards all the way up to the state level!
I would like to personally thank each and everyone one of you for giving so much of your time and love for
our Arts Festival each year. This annual event is only possible because each of you believes in bringing the
arts to our entire community and to all ages! Thank you!!

Conservation • Chair: Anne Moell Hello and Happy Fall!!! One of the Conservation CSP’s biggest programs is recycling.
Here’s some information about the recycling program sponsored
by the Trex Company. This company makes decking materials out
of recycled plastics and by donating unwanted plastic materials to
Trex, we not only keep thousands of pounds out of landfills, we also help continue
to create beautiful and environmentally responsible outdoor products. Items that
may be recycled include: grocery bags, bread bags, case overwrap, newspaper
sleeves, ice bags, wood pellet bags, ziplock and other resealable bags, produce bags,
bubble wrap, salt bags and cereal bags. All materials must be clean, dry and free of
food residue. Local businesses in our area where you can deposit these items include: Food Lion, Harris
Teeter, Kohl’s and Target.
Just another easy way we can help reduce materials going to our landfills! Thanks for participating!
Education • Chairs: Shirley Simmons & Dot Mays WELCOME to the September Meeting hosted by the Education CSP. The October 12, 2015 Program will be designed to EDUCATE the membership about the operation of a defibrillator. Our speaker, Jeff
Hammerstein, Wake EMS, will demonstrate and discuss the operation, use and costs with all of us. ESO Members, met on Sept 28 at 7:00 p.m. to discuss the book The Red Tent. Stay tuned for next month’s book club choice. Plan to participate as you will! Minigrant applications have gone out to 12 local schools. With a due date of Oct 16, the winners will be honored at the clubhouse RECEPTION on Nov. 5, 2015. This year Education has $5500 to administer from the Town of Fuquay-Varina 2016. for local teachers who submit applications.
Home Life • Chair: Doris McGlothlin
WOW! What a great start for Backpack buddies. We collected and
delivered 15 cans of sauce, 21 boxes of spaghetti noodles, also one
large bag of food items to Fuquay-Varina Elementary school. Thank
you for your continued support for our local children and families in need.
This month only we are requesting your help with collecting plastic and paper
grocery bags for Wake County Women’s Center. So, if you have extra bags in your
pantry please bring them this month only.
We are also still collecting hotel toiletries to be distributive to local charities.
HELEN WRIGHT CENTER
The staff at the center and they are thrilled that we have committed to assisting with snacks once a month. They have no regular donations for snacks so they are incredibly thankful for our club's commitment. The snacks are significant because the shelter is unable to provide the residents with breakfast or lunch. The residents must leave the facility between 9AM and 4PM, so many of these ladies have nothing to eat the entire day until they return to the shelter at 4PM when they can grab a snack when re-entering the facility. If the shelter has received snacks that day, they lay out the snacks on a desk at the front door so the residents can immediately grab them as they enter. Many will grab more than one item (if enough is available) to take with them to serve as their lunch the following day. Thank you for your interest in this project. The need is great to provide food to the center’s temporary residents.

International Outreach • Chairs: Sandy Allen & Peggy Reynaud
We want to continue to promote the program
called Shot@Life .
Shot@Life is a campaign of the United Nations
Foundation, which educates, connects and empowers Americans
to help protect children in developing countries from vaccine-
preventable diseases. By joining this movement, you can help save
a child's life every 20 seconds by learning about, advocating for
and donating vaccines to children who need them most.
In conjunction with Shot@Life, Walgreens is continuing for the third year to donate a vaccine for every shot it gives in the United States. So when you get a flu, whooping cough, shingles, pneumonia or any other immunization at Walgreens, you could help save a life. Stop by your local Walgreens pharmacy today and get a shot in order to give a shot.
October is also Month. We will be distributing our “Trick or Treat” boxes at our meeting for you to collect donations for UNICEF. Put it on your counter or desk, take it to ballgames, or pass it around at family gatherings----whatever you do ----just fill it with money so UNICEF can continue to do good things for children around the world. We raised $351.86 last year and we hope to match or exceed that amount in 2015.
Let us take time for all things; make us to grow calm, serene, gentle.
Public Issues • Chair: Pam Booker
