Dr. Glickman's Leadership students are participating in the Broward Mock Trial Competition, on April 21, 2012. Students will compete against other middle student teams, in mock trial. The trials will take place, in the courtrooms at Broward County Courthouse. Broward County Judges will be presiding over the courtroom competitions. Parents of the participating students will attend. Ms. Tiffany Bishop, a second year law student from Nova Southeastern Law School is working with the students with Dr. Glickman. It will be an exciting experience for all! Dr. Glickman's leadership students will be touring the Broward County Courthouse on 4/30, 5/10, and 5/17/12. They will visit and observe First Appearance, Juvenile and Adult Criminal courtrooms to observe hearings and trials. They will also visit Broward Public Defenders Office, and the Broward County jury room. They will meet and speak to Broward County Judges, and attorneys, the Clerk of the Broward County Courthouse and much more! It will be a very interesting and eventful trip.
Congratulations to the Westglades Concert and Honor Bands on their OUTSTANDING performances at FBA Assessment!!! Not only did our students perform amazingly well, but they also represented Westglades with PRIDE, PASSION, and PROFESSIONALISM!!! And now the results... • Concert Band received one "Superior" and two "Excellent" ratings on stage, and a "Superior" in sight-reading!!! • Honor Band received straight "Superior" ratings in ALL categories!!! WAY TO GO STUDENTS on a job WELL DONE!!! I would also like to thank all of the band parents who assisted us during our trips yesterday: Mrs. Maccubbin, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Gulla, Mrs. Garsten, Mr. Morales, Mrs. Bailey, Mrs. Byron, and Mrs. Zimmer-Fast. Westglades has Done it Again! Westglades outperformed all other middle schools at the Broward SECME Olympiad on Saturday, March 24. The winners were: Mousetrap Car - 1st place: James, McLaughlin, Drew Fletcher, and Zach Xu Mousetrap - 2nd Place: Barath Tirumala, Andy Wong, and Harris Kapoor Essay - 2nd place: Aurora Borghi Banner - 1st Place: Chi Leminh, Jessica Pan, and Elisabeth Rodrigues Poster - 1st Place: Sara Canola Over all Middle School Champions - Westglades Middle School Special Recognition needs to be given to Darius Smith for having the best performing water rocket. I don't have a hug big enough for Ms. Miderland Alexis and Ms. Debra Golding. Thank you for helping with the banner and poster, and helping me to support our students. We could not have done this without the support of the administration, the parents and teachers of Westglades Middle School. We are once again on our way to the National Competition in Alabama this summer. We hope to bring another trophy back to Westglades. Thank you to everyone! Spin-A-Yarn Club - Learn how to crochet. Spin-a-Yarn club meetings are held every Monday morning from 8:30am - 9:10am. If you want to learn how to crochet or if you know how to crochet you are welcome. Come to Mrs. Haneski's classroom 201B in the Media Center. Learn how to make a stylish scarf or a blanket.
Check-out Ms. Dinsdale’s students: Her 6th grade World History class created rice fields (carving bars of soap) to showcase terraced farming for our chapter on Ancient China. 7th grade Geography classes are using the wireless laptops to create inspiration webs about countries in Central Asia.
The Environmental Science class is selling our organic hydroponic vegetables that have been grown by the students this semester. We will have many vegetables and herbs available for sale each week. Parents may contact me or see the signs posted in the car lines. You may purchase the veggies/herbs in the car line. Examples of veggies that will be available are leaf lettuce, romaine lettuce, yellow squash, zucchini, radish, parsley, cilantro, cucumber, dill, spinach, Swiss chard, Chinese okra, and tomatoes. Parkland Kids Camp and Parkland Teen Camp Summer Recreation Program Parkland Kids Camp is a summer recreation program for children ages 5 to 11 (kindergarten through grade 6). Children must be five years of age by June 18, 2012 to enroll in the program. The program’s hours of operation are from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm. Extended hours are available until 5:00 pm. Children are grouped according to the grade level they will be entering in the fall of 2012. The children are placed in a camp group of 25 children or less that are supervised by three to four counselors (Senior Counselor, Junior Counselor, and Counselor in Training). The Camper to Counselor Ratio is 5 to 1. The program consists of sports, arts & crafts, games, special on-site activities, and field trips. Field trips are taken aboard air-conditioned motor coach buses. Field trips are taken two to three days per week to facilities located in the tri-county area such as movies, bowling, water parks, arcades, skating, museums, etc. Basic field trips are included in the cost of the camp program. Parkland Teen Camp is a summer recreation program for children ages 12 to 14 (grades 7-9). They must have completed the sixth grade to be eligible for the program. The program hours of operation are from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm. Extended hours are not available. The camper to counselor ratio is 10 to 1 at Teen Camp. Campers are chaperoned by adult senior counselors. The program is a Teen Travel Camp. Field trips are taken aboard air-conditioned motor coach buses. Field trips are taken five days per week to facilities located in the tri-county area such as movies, bowling, water parks, arcades, skating, museums, etc. Basic field trips are included in the cost of the camp program.
