The

Greetings North Shore family,

Summer seems to be zooming past! It will not be long before our

children and youth will be returning to school and maybe some of us will

be thankful to be back to a “normal” routine. As I have been meeting,

talking and praying with folks it seems that so many want to be in study

together. A few Sunday’s ago I spoke about revitalizing the Church,

especially getting this on the hearts of Generation Y (millennial). To do

that, we have to be on fire for Jesus too! We need to allow and encourage

our youth to be creative in worship and evangelism. I believe that a revival

is upon us to reclaim our Methodist roots. John Wesley had a plan and it

was awesome! His method centered on small group study, accountability

and acts of justice and mercy. To follow in our Wesleyan tradition is to

authentically reveal our hurts, habits and hang-ups as we study together…

and guess what… that is the only way to make real changes in our lives.

This is the heart of justifying grace as we begin to align our will with God’s

will. Wesley would have us on our knees praying by the power of the Holy

Spirit with and for each other, for the world, and for direction. He would

encourage us to practice social holiness as we advocate for the least, the last

and the lost. I say we reclaim our Methodist heritage! No matter how God

calls us, we are called to ACT-not only on God’s claim on our lives, but

also in faith. We follow, often not understanding where God is leading us,

and often discovering we are actually headed into unexpected territory.

Do not be afraid…that is exactly where God is. Let’s go there together.

Pastor Kim

A beloved hymn in The United Methodist Hymnal expresses God’s call and

our response:

“Here I am Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I

will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart.”

August 4th Communion Offering- Communities in Schools works within the public school system,

determining student needs and establishing relationships with local businesses, social service

agencies, health care providers, and parent/volunteer organizations to provide needed

resources. Many children face challenges both inside and outside the classroom. Though a

school-based coordinator, Communities in Schools strategically aligns and delivers needed resources

so that students can focus on learning.

It's August!! The summer is flying by so fast. By the end of this month we'll be back in school, but its not over yet. To kick things off, the youth will be heading out for the "??Mystery Trip 2013 - Are you BRAVE enough??" on August 2-3. If you want to know where we're going, you'll have to ask one of them when we get back, because its all top secret for now.

The following week, the Youth and Deckhands will be spending some time and energy getting the volleyball court finished and wrapping up some other projects around the church.

This month will also mark a change in our Sunday night meeting schedule. From now on, the youth are invited to come at 4:30 PM to play games like basketball, volleyball and gaga ball. Dinner will still begin at 5:00 PM, followed by some group games/activities and then Bible study at 6:00 PM. With this new schedule, we will be looking for Adult Sponsors to help referee the various activities during the 4:30-5:00 PM time slot. So please let me know if you are interested in volunteering and becoming a mentor for our youth.

Our first Bible study series starts on August 4th. The study will follow the book Crazy Love by Francis Chan. We will be reading one chapter of the book on our own each week and then having a group discussion at our Sunday evening youth meeting. The book is available in audio, kindle and paperback versions. Please let me know if you need help finding a copy of it.

If you would like to find out more about how to become involved with the One8T Youth Ministry here at North Shore UMC, please contact me at 830-660-9017 call/text or [email protected]. (Note that my email has changed.)

May God's Grace Shine Upon Us All!!

Music News

Happy August everyone! First of all, thank you, church family, for the blessing you gave to the praise band for sending us to Kansas City for the National Worship Leaders Conference last month. It was an absolute amazing experience for us to go and experience the sights and sounds of the conference, and what a soul-filling oppor-tunity it was! We were able to worship together with literally thousands of worship leaders from across the nation, raising our voices together to worship God. I wish you could have been in the room, hearing all the voices from both on stage and in the congregation there, singing praises to our God... quite the experience! We worshipped with some of the greatest worship leaders and song writers of today, Matt Maher and Big Daddy Weave, just to name a few! There were individualized classes for each of the band members to attend, from how lighting affects worship, to how to be a better worship leader, to guitar classes, drum classes, vocal coaching, piano classes, sound tech classes... and many, many more! We were able to have discussions with the industry leaders on how to make the most out of our worship for our local congre-gations, and we plan to do just that! You may have no-ticed some slight changes in our worship layout al-ready, especially in the early praise service, and there are other changes to come, but all changes will be for the glory of Jesus Christ! We invite you to pray and be in thought for our praise band and worship leaders in the coming months. On behalf of Julianna Reel, Forrest Hodges, Dexx Moore, Sandy Roberts, Deron LeStourgeon, and myself, THANK YOU for this experi-ence! Our spiritual batteries are filled and we are ready to worship with you! The traditional choir and handbells are back! Fresh from our July break, we're ready once again to sing and ring our praises to God, and we have a spot for YOU! Our handbells meet on Wednesdays from 6:00pm to 7:00pm in the choir room, and the chancel choir meets from 7:00pm to 8:00pm on Wednesdays in the same room! If you have a song in your heart, please come share it with us! We'll have a seat ready for you! Thank you for your support for our ministry! God bless you! Jimmy Kritikos

W M U UNITED METHODIST WOMEN

Thank you North Shore UMC. Through your generosity the UMW Mission Project: Manos Juntos Mexico was a success. NSUMC contributed 15 backpacks as well as a box of extra school supplies and cash for medical expenses. The San Antonio District gave 275 backpacks and $2,300 total for medical expenses. All together the Southwest Conference collected 1,015 kits and backpacks and a total of $5,707 for medical expenses. Three of the NSUMC UMW attended Mission u in Kerrville, it was a great weekend. We had the opportunity to take 2 classes, one was Living Sacramentally, Walking Justly, the other was on the Roma of Europe. This was an eye opening study on a people long oppressed. It will also be the topic of the Reading Circle meeting August 16th. The place has not been determined yet.

All meetings will resume in August, the first is Creative hands meeting August 8th from 9-2 at the church. We will continue to work on items for the Coker Fest craft sale. These items will include bead work as well as sewing and knitting. If you have a desire to be “crafty” but don’t sew come and join us for some of the other activities. Don’t forget your lunch.

The General meeting will be August 13th at 12:30 at the church. Eileen Lehmberg, The San Antonio District President will be here to discuss the many ways that the UMW have been instrumental in changing the world. Please come and join us and learn more about the benefits of this organization.

The UMW has also been purchasing and delivering

groceries to families with children who might not

otherwise have a good meal during the summer. This

has been a blessing to all involved. We are currently

delivering to 4 families and have partnered with the

San Antonio Food Bank for some of the supplies, this

has really allowed our dollars to go further. If you

know of anyone who could benefit from this program

please contact Susan Harris, Myra Zumwalt, or

Barbara Cartwright.

Men of North Shore

Our next meeting will be Aug 6th @ 7:30. Looking forward to a great breakfast, with devotions from yours truly! Our “Guest Speaker” will be Pastor

Kim Burke, also an honorary UMM Member. Next month we will hear from Habitat for Humanity so lots coming up.

I have been thinking about Pastor Kim’s message from two weeks back about the Good Samaritan. When you see a need, someone who needs your help, a task that needs doing, how do you respond? Sometimes, I find myself performing grudgingly, out of a misplaced sense of duty rather than responding with genuine Christian compassion. I don’t think that a grudging sense of duty is what the Savior had in mind when teaching this par-able. Just a thought…

Come join us next month. There are always things to learn and ways to grow. As always, I am proud to be one of you and grateful for the chance to grow in Christ and in fellowship with all of you.

God Bless Stan

ZONE FORECAST

Imagine if everyone was in a small group…imagine.

I can see it. Can you? Often churches get bogged

down in curriculum choice and who will lead, or I’m

not equipped to lead.

North Shore UMC is seeking to create small groups

in each of the four zones of our community and on

the four zones of bible study, prayer, accountability

and service. We pray that this will be the core of our

faith development and faith life together. We will

study the scripture passage preached in church on

Sunday. The bulletin will have all you need- ques-

tions each week to dive deeper into the text and for

real life application. Children and youth in Sunday

school will be learning from curriculum, which fol-

lows the lectionary text as well. This leaves lots of

room for us to be talking together as friends and

family.

If you live in one of our four zones, please pray

about opening your home in your neighborhood, of-

fice, a local restaurant, etc., weekly. All you need is

a willing heart to delve deeper in faith with others.

Once we have disciples who have offered space, we

can then begin to connect people together.

The Zones

Spring Branch/Bulverde

North Shore-Mystic Shores to Fischer and 32 areas,

Wimberley

Central-Canyon City, Hancock, Sattler

South-Startzville, New Braunfels, San Marcos.

If you live in or near one of the Four Zones and

could host a group in your home please contact

Pastor Kim at [email protected] or sign

up in the Narthex.

We already have one group in the North Shore Zone

but we are hoping for more. The group in the North

Shore Zone meets every Wednesday night at 6pm at

Rocky Creek Ranch Clubhouse located at 2005

Rocky Ridge Loop. For more information please

contact Art and Ruth Carpenter at 830-935-3145 or

email [email protected]

Mark your calendar and save these dates:

Sunday August 25th Blessing of the backpacks,

recognition of teachers.

Back to School Bash and recognition of new

members-food, fun and fellowship. After the 10:45

service, stay for a meal and lots of fun for kids of all

ages. Holy Smokes!

September 29th-Don’t Go To Church-Be The

Church. On this Sunday we will come together for

prayer and then be released in teams out to the

community to serve in various projects around the

lake. Projects will be appropriate for all ages. There

will be projects at the church for those who cannot

tolerate physical activity. If you know of a project

to help a family or organization, contact the church

office.
