PTA Reflections Program 2013-2014

The PTA Reflections Arts Recognition Program encourages students to explore their talents and express themselves creatively.

For the 2013-2014 program year, we are seeking artwork based on the theme: "Believe, Dream, Inspire."

Students are invited to submit an original work of art in one of six areas:

• Visual arts • Photography• Literature • Dance choreography• Musical composition • Film production

The submission deadline is November 19, 2013. Rules for participation and student entry forms can be found

on the PTA web page, under the Enrichment Programs tab at www.stoneleighpta.org/enrichment-programs/reflections. Please be sure to review all rules for your category and have the forms completed BEFORE submitting your entry. SES entries will be collected via a box in the front office, or can be given directly to Courtney McGee or Cleo Stamatos. All entries are due the week before Thanksgiving.

The week before the winter break, listen for a morning an-nouncement to hear which students' entries have been selected (by an impartial panel) to represent SES in the county competi-tion. In January/February we will await County PTA news on SES entries that may be going on to statewide judging. We have even had a past entry go on to National PTA competition! We'd love to see yours there!

Students who win an Award of Merit or Award of Excellence at the county level will be invited by the Baltimore County PTA to attend a special award ceremony in the Spring.

Watch the newsletter and listen to morning announcements for exciting program updates as the year progresses.

We hope you'll join us on this creative journey and show us what "Believe, Dream, Inspire" means to YOU!

If you have questions about the program, please see the website or contact Courtney McGee or Cleo Stamatos for more information.

Did you know that for each Box Tops for Education

coupon we collect, Stoneleigh Elementary earns 10¢? These little coupons really add up! Last year we earned over $1400 for our school, and we hope to earn even more this year.

Box Top coupons can be found on the packaging of everything from cereal to water filters to office supplies. Box Tops can be submitted in zip-top baggies or on collection sheets like the one attached to this newsletter; or you can download a sheet from BTFE.com.

This is a great project to have your kids help with. They're great at spotting Box Tops, and it's fun to fill up a new collection sheet! Before submitting them, check the dates on your Box Tops to make sure they haven't expired.

Please send Box Top coupons to school with your child's homeroom teacher's name clearly marked on the baggie or form so that your child's class gets credit for your sub-mission. We'll keep track of the top-earning homerooms throughout the year. The teacher of the winning homeroom will be declared Box Tops King or Queen at the end of the school year!

Want to help even more? We're always looking for parents to help sort and count Box Tops throughout the year. It's easy and can be done on your own time. Email [email protected] for more information.

Fundraiser at Five GuysBased on the success of last year's event, we'll be host-

ing another restaurant night at Five Guys in Towson. Mark your calendars for Tuesday, November 5th. Five Guys will donate 20% of proceeds from all orders (eat in or take out) purchased between 5:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. with this flyer. Enjoy a fun night with your friends while supporting your PTA. Please be sure to bring a copy of the attached flyer to ensure we get the credit. We are looking forward to seeing you there!

PTA Cultural Enrichment Assembly Update

Opera @ Stoneleigh!La la la la laaaa! The PTA’s Cultural Enrichment Assembly

committee is delighted to announce a fifth assembly program for this school year. On Friday, February 28th, performers from The Lyric Opera will trill and thrill our children with their vocal and theatrical prowess.

The lower grades (K-2nd) will experience Puppets & Papage-no, a wonderful introduction to the essential elements of opera. The production is an interactive presentation featuring large-scale puppets seen simultaneously with the performers.

Let’s Make an Opera, presented to the upper grades (3rd-5th), is an expansion of Puppets & Papageno in its exploration of op-era essentials while going slightly more in-depth using a variety of languages and styles, as well as student volunteers.

If the Cello Fury assembly is any indication of our students’ appetite for musical performances, this event is sure to not only expand their horizons but “wow” them. As with every assembly, the PTA’s Cultural Enrichment Committee committee relies on parents to help staff the event. Please mark your calendars and let us know if you would like to volunteer. You won’t want to miss it.

Help Wanted!Kiss-n-Go Volunteers are needed! Help students to safely

disembark from their cars in the morning along Pemberton Road (aka “drop-off zone” or “Kiss-n-Go”). A large volun-teer pool makes everyone’s job less frequent. If you use the drop-off zone, or even if you don’t but want to do something brief but rewarding, try it. You’ll like it! Please complete our online volunteer form at www.tinyurl.com/kiss-n-go if you are interested.

FIRE UP YOUR FEETFall Activity Challenge is underway!

The Challenge is being held between October 1 and October 31 and offers $50,000 in awards to more than 100 schools to support the health and wellness program of our school’s choosing. Stoneleigh Elementary PTA has already won $100!

The Fire Up Your Feet Fall Activity Challenge offers a chance for every student, staff member and parent to participate. Remember to track your activity either at home with your smartphone, or by using the school’s resources. We’re happy to help!

Fire Up Your Feet works in tandem with Stoneleigh’s Walking Wednesdays. The first Wednesday of every month, we’ll have "walking school buses" with flags on routes to school. Our next Walking Wednesday will be November 6th. Please be sure to walk and log your activity online.

We all win when we help grow healthy, high-performing students at our schools. We encourage you to work with your child to participate in this contest and get healthy. Stoneleigh is an exceptionally fit and active community – so if you are already moving, use your healthy lifestyle to win money for your PTA. Log on and tell us how you are getting active.

To participate, all you need to do is register at www.fireupyourfeet.org and track at least one physical activity per week from the time that you register during the month-long Challenge period. For the Week 4 Challenge (Oct. 21-Oct. 28), the school with the most parents participating throughout the Challenge will win. We hope you will sign up and participate!

For more details contact PTA Health and Safety Committee members Aimee Freeman or Cleo Manuel Stamatos, or email [email protected].
