On this day in 1997, U.S. Air Force officials release a 231-page report titled “The Roswell Report, Case Closed,” dismissing long-standing claims of an alien spacecraft crash in Roswell, New Mexico, almost exactly 50 years earlier. Any hopes that this would put an end to the cover-up debate were in vain, as furious ufologists rushed to point out the report’s inconsistencies.

Hello, I’m Dr. Jaszczak, medical director at the Fairlight Medical Center in Williston, North Dakota. This is the first of several columns that will talk about aspects of occupational medicine. Today, I’ll talk about mask fit testing.

Why do mask fit testing? Well, workers are human beings and human beings come in all shapes and sizes. Not only must a mask be chosen to address the airborne hazard that the worker will face but also must be right for the workers face to allow an adequate seal. A fit test answers the question of what specific type, model and size of a mask will adequately fit a specific individual. Masks don’t work well with full beards, so fit testing stations usually have a sink and razor available. Sorry guys, masks and beards just don’t work together.

Like any tool, the mask has to be used correctly. So, the first extremely important part of the test is teaching the worker how to properly don and tighten the mask.

Once the mask is on right, the worker is challenged with some substance

that can be smelled, tasted or irritating during eight e x e r c i s e s , each exercise typically lasts 60 seconds. These include n o r m a l b r e a t h i n g , h e a v y b r e a t h i n g , shake head, nod head, talking, jog in place, grimace, normal breathing again. If the worker can smell or taste the irritant, the test is considered a fail and a different mask tried. The most common irritants used are smoke and banana oil.

Mask fits tests come in two varieties, qualitative and quantitative, and are guided by OSHA regulations released in 1998. Qualitative testing is an easy method of evaluation, the quantitative requires more expensive equipment but provides more precise computer documented results.

Here we are week 7. It has been a fast and furious 7 weeks. It seems like days ago I was preparing to send our first issue down to the print room and anticipating the first copy to fall off the press. Our light shines brighter every day. Not a day goes by that someone from the community calls us, sends us an email, or drops a letter in the mail to tell us how much they like the paper.

We are still a long way from where I want to be, but I vow to make our paper of the highest quality for this community. Starting in a

few weeks on Issue no. 10 we will be doing a noticeable upgrade to our publication that will take us one step closer to our vision. We need your feed back now, please let us know what you want to see or what you don’t want to see. We will listen to all feedback and comments.

We are still looking for writers and someone to help with some photography. Please don’t hesitate; we would love to grow our team. Don’t hesitate to call us at 701.580.1295 or email at [email protected].

Engine fires are forcing General Motors to recall the Chevy Cruze, a popular model that has helped GM win back small-car buyers.

The recall covers 475,000 vehicles made in the U.S. from September of 2010 through May of 2012. It’s the car’s fifth recall in two years, raising questions about the sedan’s reliability.

The company knows of 30 fires caused by the problem, but no injuries have been reported. Flames engulfed and destroyed cars in two cases reported to federal safety officials.

GM will notify owners starting July 11 about when to bring cars to local dealers for repairs, which are free and should take about 30 minutes. Dealers will fix the problem by cutting the plastic shield to let the fluids drain to the pavement.

Cruzes with worn-out manual transmissions also can leak fluid onto the shields in rare cases.

In addition, 61,000 of the recalled Cruzes are covered under another recall. GM says 249 of them have welds missing from a bracket that holds the tanks. The tanks could come lose in a crash, possibly leaking and causing fires. Dealers will secure brackets with fasteners.

The Cruze, introduced in September of 2010, has been recalled far more frequently than other new models launched around the same time.

The Cruze has done well in a market where GM struggled for years. It was the top-selling compact in the U.S. from May through September last year.

Sales have fallen as more Toyota Corollas and Honda Civics became available. Both were scarce after a 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan hobbled production.

Still, GM has sold more than 351,000 Cruzes in the U.S. alone, including almost 95,000 so far this year.

The recall involves cars built at GM’s Lordstown, Ohio, factory. They were sold in the U.S., Canada and Israel.

Best Tipper: Drew Carey - is a big enough tipper that waiters apparently fall all over themselves trying to serve him. For instance? He dined at Arnie Morton steakhouse in Los Angeles, racking up a $250 tab. On top of that, he plunked down a $400 tip. The price is right indeed.

Worst Tipper: Tiger Woods - Doesn’t tip because he says he doesn’t carry cash.

BNSF Railway (BNSF) is planning to invest $100m in Minnesota and $86m in North Dakota for railway maintenance, capacity improvements and expansion projects in 2012.

Under the project, BNSF will upgrade rail sidings to increase speed, as well as improve a US government-mandated positive train control (PTC) system.

The investment will also be used for a track maintenance programme in Minnesota, which will include 1,817 miles of surfacing and undercutting work, as

well as the replacement of 42 miles of rail and 325,000 ties.

BNSF chairman and chief executive officer Matthew Rose said: “BNSF’s investments will improve our ability to provide rail freight services to Minnesota businesses and communities, and will expand opportunities to create more jobs and growth for the Minnesota economy.”

The company’s capacity improvements in North Dakota include expansion of rail sidings to boost rail capacity and signal upgrades.

Under the second project, which is funded by BNSF, Amtrak and the state of North Dakota, the company will increase the height of the track along the Devils Lake to prevent submergence of tracks due to rising water levels.

BNSF will also carry out 1,232 miles of track surfacing and undercutting work, as well as replace 67 miles of rail track and 122,000 ties.

Investments in Minnesota and North Dakota are part of the company’s $3.9bn capital investment programme for 2012, out of which around $2.1bn will be spent on improvements on the railway’s core network and related assets. The company is also planning to invest $1.1bn on locomotives, freight cars and other equipment acquisitions.

An estimated $300 million will be invested in federally-mandated PTC technology and $400 million towards terminal, line and intermodal expansion and efficiency projects. AP

North Dakota’s capacity to export crude oil by rail has jumped more than 50 percent in June. The increase comes with two new loading facilities in western North Dakota’s oil patch. Musket Corp. increased capacity at its crude-to-rail facility at Dore from 10,000 barrels to 60,000 barrels per day. And Rangeland Energy says its new facility near Epping has at least 120,000 barrels of daily shipping capacity North Dakota Pipeline Authority Director Justin Kringstad says the two terminals bring to 17 the number of facilities built since 2008 to move crude to markets not served by pipelines.

Kringstad says the state now has the ability to ship about 470,000 barrels of oil daily by rail. That number could increase to 710,000 barrels by year’s end. AP

Basin Electric Power Cooperative has started work on a natural gas-fueled plant that will help meet the oil industry’s electric power demands.

The Pioneer station will be built about 15 miles northwest of Williston. It will be near a natural gas processing plant that’s also under construction.

They both will be tied into a rural cooperative electric substation.

Project manager Myron Steckler said the

new Pioneer station will be capable of generating 45 megawatts of power.

Basin Electric hopes to have the plant operating by early 2013.

Natural gas has become a more popular fuel for electric generation because its price has been consistently going down in recent months.

Basin Electric is based in Bismarck. It supplies wholesale power to rural electric cooperative customers. AP

A summer scene of Lake Sakakawea near Lewis and Clark State Park east of Williston has been chosen for the cover of the newly published 2013 North Dakota Horizons scenic calendar.

The photograph was taken by Rebecca Helm of Williston, who also has another scenic photo taken near Lewis and Clark State Park in the calendar. Helm, a native of western Pennsylvania, lived in western New York for 20 years before moving to western North Dakota in 2001. In the years since, she has spent many hours exploring vast areas of North Dakota and looking for special pictures. She has also been involved with the Upper Missouri Camera Club in Williston.

This is the third consecutive year Helm’s photography has appeared in this scenic calendar. It is published by North Dakota Horizons magazine, which for more

than 40 years has been North Dakota’s state magazine.

A reception honoring Helm and introducing the calendar will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, June 29 at Books on Broadway, 12 ½ West Broadway, Williston. It is open to the public.

One of our own has made it to the big time media. Dave Ludwig of Extreme Boost was recently spotlighted by CNN. We would like to congratulate Dave on such an accomplishment. For those of us who have been in business we know it is about the bottom line but that these types of accomplishments speak for themselves and often last longer than any profits. Below you will find the article that was posted on CNN’s website.

Williston, N.D., has always had spotty cell phone service, and reception is even worse in the oilfields.

Given the area’s influx of workers who need wireless service, 22-year-old Dave Ludwig decided that a company selling devices to improve cell phone service could be a gold mine.

“We have terrible problems with service up here, so I saw that there would be a demand for this and I jumped on the opportunity,” said Ludwig, who studied entrepreneurship at Williston State College.

Ludwig heard about cell phone signal boosters, devices that can enhance cell phone reception, and ordered a few to test out in some of the local dead zones. After determining that they did in fact improve his reception, he entered into a relationship with national electronics dealer Wilson Electronics to order more of them, and he began selling the devices about six months ago. The boosters range in price from $110 for a truck or car all the way up to more than $1,000 for a business or home, depending on the size.

After selling only 10 units during his first month in business, he said he is now selling about 85 a month. His biggest customers are oilfield workers stationed at wells with very little cell phone service, and then farmers, who also live and work in areas with limited reception, said Ludwig.

Wacky NewsA girl had to be rescued when she climbed a 40ft electricity pylon thinking it was a bridge after smoking super-strength cannabis. Horrified locals spotted the 21-year-old - from Zlin, Czech Republic - apparently trying to cross a river. Drug counsellors and police eventually persuaded her to come down after two hours on the pylon.

FamilyCuster State Park - Few truly wild places remain in this country. Custer State Park is one of them. Located in the Black Hills of South Dakota, the park is home to a variety of wildlife and magnificent scenery spanning 71,000 acres. Nearly 1,300 bison, commonly called buffalo, roam the prairies and hills of Custer State Park, which they share with swift pronghorn, shy elk, sure-footed mountain goats and curious burros. Visitors often enjoy close encounters with these permanent residents along

the 18-mile Wildlife Loop Road that winds around the southern edge of the park. With its winding roads and small granite tunnels, Needles Highway provides the perfect backdrop for a scenic drive and ranks as a favorite among sightseers and motorcycle enthusiasts. In Custer State Park, you’re free to roam amidst pure nature. Enjoy leisurely walks along extensive hiking trails throughout the park or climb the summit of Harney Peak, the highest point east of the Rocky Mountains.

At the top is a breathtaking vista of granite peaks carpeted with evergreens and aspens. Park visitors love kayaking, canoeing and paddle-boating in the refreshing mountain lakes. The park offers horseback riding, Buffalo Safari Jeep Tours, chuck wagon suppers, gold panning demonstrations, fishing, naturalist programs and much more. Unique lodges and scenic campgrounds provide the ideal location for creating lasting vacation memories in the great outdoors. The annual Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup is the final event of an autumn weekend full of Old West entertainment and heart-pounding adventure. You can feel the earth shake from thousands of thundering hooves as wranglers and rangers round up the park’s 1,500 bison. The Buffalo Roundup is an experience of a lifetime that you have to see to believe.

Total Time: 6 hr 35 min/Prep 20 minCook 15 min/Yield: 4 servings/Level:EasyIngredients1 whole pork tenderloin, approximately 1 pound1 lime, zest finely grated1/2 cup freshly squeezed lime juice1/4 cup honey1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt1/2 teaspoon garlic powder1 chipotle chile pepper in adobo sauce1 teaspoon vegetable oil1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro leavesDirectionsTrim the pork tenderloin of any excess fat and silver skin. Place the lime zest, lime juice, honey, salt, and garlic powder in a small, lid-ded jar and shake to combine. Pour half of the marinade mixture into a 1-gallon resealable bag, add the chipotle pepper, and move around to combine. Add the pork tenderloin to the bag and seal, removing as much air as possible and place in a container to catch any leaks. Marinate in the refrigerator for 6 to 24 hours, rotating the bag halfway through the time. Place the remaining marinade in a covered container and refrigerate until ready to use. Allow to sit at room temperature while preparing the grill.

Brush the grill with vegetable oil. Remove the tenderloin from the bag and place in the center of grate. Discard bag with marinade. Cover and cook for 12 to 15 minutes, turning every 1 1/2 to 2 minutes, until the tenderloin reaches an internal temperature of 140 degrees F.

Remove the tenderloin from the grill and place on a large piece of heavy-duty aluminum foil folded at the edges to create a basket, and pour on the reserved marinade. Wrap tightly and rest for 10 minutes. Remove to a cutting board and slice. Garnish with cilantro and serve. Recipe courtesy Alton Brown - www.foodnetwork.com
