Modern Times in the BakkenFOR many years, North Dakota has been the least visited state in the Union. There are no real tourist attractions here; Mount Rushmore is in South Dakota. But reporters from all over the world have been coming here lately, because North Dakota boasts one of the most interesting and exciting stories in the country: an honest-to-goodness boom.

The state has the lowest unemployment rate in the country, at 3.1 percent. Some wonder who could be out of work, given all the Help Wanted signs. North Dakota is No. 1 in job growth and No. 1 in income growth. At the heart of this prosperity is the Bakken formation, located in the northwestern part of the state.

Oil was discovered in this area in 1951, but the trick was extracting it. Fracking and horizontal drilling proved to be a success. Earlier this year, North Dakota passed California as the third-greatest oil-producing state. Before the year is

out, they should pass Alaska, trailing only Texas.

People from the other 49 states are coming to North Dakota to participate in this boom. Entrepreneurs in and around the Bakken are having a field day. The common comparison is to the Gold Rush, and that comparison is apt. North Dakota’s government is flush in money, and they are both investing in infrastructure and cutting taxes. Not every state has a Bakken, obviously - this goose laying golden eggs. Still, other states can learn from North Dakota, as well as Washington, D.C.

“There are 8 million stories in the naked city,” goes an old movie line.

There are almost as many in the Bakken. Gary Emineth, an entrepreneur and politico, is in the burrito business. For the Bakken, he had a special burrito made: big, manly, meal-like. He has done more business in 13 stores in the Bakken than

Nearly two years ago I came to the Williston area to verify the rumors that I heard of the economic explosion. I soon joined with a business partner to start looking at the possibility of a catering company here in the Williston Area. We did the paperwork, deposited the money and we were off.

After several months of operations, I noticed that the local publications left me wanting more or less as it may be. I wanted a publication that focused on the important happenings without long opinionated stories and advertising that was clean clear and easy to follow. I talked to a few of the local publications and didn’t see any changes.

So I returned to my hometown and partners up with some experienced publishers and am now proud to produce the Williston Trader. Although this first edition is not

exactly what I wanted to see, I believe you will see a great step forward and I am happy to see what is coming up the road for the Williston Trader. in 450 stores elsewhere. In the town of Williston, the McDonald’s had to close in the middle of a Wednesday afternoon. They had run out of food. The Williston Walmart does not really bother stocking the shelves anymore. First, who wants to work as a stockboy when you can make a bundle in the oil patch? Second, the goods would not stay on the shelves long. The store just sets the pallets in the aisles, and the customers grab the goods and go right to the register.

Someone says to me, “Do you mind if I tell you something blue?” I’m all ears. “From what I hear,” he says, “the strippers are making more per night in Williston than they do in Las Vegas.”

Not only are people coming to North Dakota, North Dakotans aren’t leaving. For generations, North Dakotans who have wanted a chance in life have had to leave the state. Mom and Dad may have been left at home, but the kids were gone. North Dakota was a place you were from, not a place where you lived. Today, you probably don’t have to leave, if you don’t want to. And people who did leave are “coming back in droves,” Lindahl says. (He himself is one of them.) Not a few North Dakotans, who have always lived modestly, are becoming rich overnight: because they have surface rights to sell, or, even better, mineral rights. Or they may have some land on which people can place RVs or trailer homes.

Amtrak Now Using iPhone ForTicket ScannersOld-school train conductors are finally ready to give up their hole punchers to try something new: the iPhone.

Amtrak has been training conductors since November to use the Apple handset as an electronic ticket scanner on a few routes, including from Boston to Portland, Me., and San Jose, Calif., to Sacramento.

By late summer, 1,700 conductors will be using the devices on Amtrak trains across the country, the company said.

With the new system, passengers will be able to print tickets or load a special bar code on their smartphone screens for conductors to scan. Conductors will be able to keep track of passengers on board. No need to print the document and bring it with you.

The industry faces a particular challenge in that passengers hop on and off at different platforms at different times, unlike at an airport.

The old manual ticketing process of punching a hole in the ticket and

sending it to a central location to be scanned and was not good at tracking passengers on board because of the delay between when the ticket was checked and when it was processed.

With the new iPhone-powered system, conductors can monitor passenger check-ins in real time. If there are passengers who don’t show up, it will be easier to fill empty seats with other passengers.With the app, conductors can indicate to the engineer if a disabled person is getting on at a particular stop so that the train staff can be prepared to coordinate the track and the wheelchair lift. The app also allows conductors to report equipment failures, like broken toilet fixtures, to mechanics.

For passengers, the new system means it will be easier to book or modify reservations. If a rider discovered at the last minute that she had to take a train at a different time, she could make the change online or in Amtrak’s iPhone app, whereas previously she would have had to refund a ticket and buy a new one at a machine or through an agent.

The iPhone system cost Amtrak $7.5 million — $5.5 million for the software development and $2 million for the hardware, the company said.

Amtrak’s smartphone app for passengers is currently available only for iPhones, but the corporation said it was working on a version for Android devices, due for release by early fall.

Western North Dakota has become the Promised Land, the Land of Opportunity in recent months. The question is where are the housing opportunities?

The facts are startling. The amount of money some folks are making during this oil boom in and around the Williston area is astonishing.

Employment and wage statistics show that some occupations, especially in the oil patch, can be extremely lucrative.

Petroleum engineers are in high demand and well compensated.

The average hourly wage for occupations in the Western North Dakota portion of the state is listed at more than $35 hourly. A healthy yearly income.

If you add the word engineer to your title you would be ranging from $90,000 on up (excluding petroleum engineers) per year statewide.

The average weekly wage in the Williston area has ballooned to nearly $1,400.

The job numbers are impressive in both quantity and quality - more than 25,000 new jobs are available statewide compared to only a year ago. More than 4,000 new jobs became available between January 2012 and February 2012.

It’s obvious that with this type of boom,

there is a need for housing. Due to the shortage of permanent housing, most workers in the oil patch live in crew camps.

It’s probably the biggest problem facing the Bakken. There is no place to stay. You can sleep in your vehicle which most do, but that’s a serious risk in a North Dakota winter. Some people commute for hours.

Throughout the oil patch are “man camps,” also called “crew camps”: modular housing occupied by thousands of men, some of whom sleep in shifts. These camps suddenly crop up in farmers’ fields.

Williston Basin crude oil production and takeaway capacity are increasingCrude oil production from the Williston Basin (primarily the Bakken formation) recently increased to more than 600 thousand barrels per day (bbl/d), according to Bentek Energy, LLC (Bentek), testing the ability of the transportation system—oil pipelines, truck deliveries, and rail—to move crude oil out of the area (see chart above). The current price gap between Bakken crude oil and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) shows the effects of this constraint. Bentek projects more transportation capacity coming online in 2012, potentially alleviating this constraint.

Due to pipeline capacity constraints, Williston Basin producers rely on rail and trucks to move additional crude oil out of the region. Because

of these transportation constraints, Bakken crude oil currently sells at a discount of $7.50 per barrel to WTI. This discount was as much as $28 per barrel in February 2012 and is expected to continue as long as transportation constraints persist.

Currently, North Dakota has only one refinery, which processes about 58 thousand bbl/d of crude oil. Crude oil is delivered to other markets using a combination of pipeline, rail, and truck. Delivery capability as of April 2012 was: 450 thousand bbl/d by oil pipeline; 150 thousand bbl/d by rail; and small volumes by truck. However, in 2012, incremental additions to rail and oil pipeline capacity for the Williston Basin could total 350 thousand bbl/d.

Snagging a paddlefish takes more patience than the average fishing trip. With the paddlefish snagging season starting Tuesday, anglers are anticipating an eventful season.

The paddlefish snagging season is scheduled to last until the end of the month depending on how soon the harvest reaches 1,000 fish. The season

could close early with a 36-hour notice by the NDGF Department. If the season closes early, an extended snag-and-release-only period will be in effect for anglers with a current season, unused paddlefish tag.

Snag-and-release days are Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. The fish can be harvested the rest of the week.

Snagging hours are from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily and one tag will be issued to each angler. Snagging is allowed at all areas of the Yellowstone River in North

Dakota and the area of the Missouri River lying west of the U.S. Highway 85 bridge to the Montana border.

Baiting isn’t allowed while paddlefishing, snagging makes it more of a challenge.

Despite the weather conditions, paddlefishing has its moments of excitement, whether you have a rod in your hand or standing on the shoreline.

It’s a fun time. It is highly recommended to try it sometime. Even if you just go up there and watch. It’s an amazing experience just to see the first being caught.

Yields: 4–6 servingsTotal time: 2 1/4 hoursPrep time: 15 minutesIngredients1 teaspoon onion powder11/2 teaspoons garlic pepper (optional)11/2 teaspoons lemon pepper11/2 teaspoons paprika2 full slabs pork baby back ribs or 8 pork country-style ribs2 teaspoons black pepper2 teaspoons seasoning salt4 tablespoons spicy brown mustard1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1/4 teaspoon cumin1/4 teaspoon thyme1/2 cup packed brown sugar1/2 teaspoon garlic powder1/2 teaspoon grated orange rind

InstructionsCombine the rub ingredients. Lightly coat the rib meat with mustard; all sides for country-style ribs and meat side for baby back ribs. Sprinkle ½-cup rub mixture evenly over the ribs. Press into mustard and wrap ribs tightly in aluminum foil.

Place the ribs on the grill over indirect heat. (Note: this means that you place all the charcoal on one side of the grill. When the coals are ready, the food gets placed on the opposite side of the grill.) Cook the meat covered for 90 minutes.

Remove the ribs from foil and sprinkle the remaining rub mixture over the ribs (do not rewrap in foil). Place the ribs, meat side down on the grill over indirect heat. Cover the grill and cook for 10 minutes. Turn the ribs so they are facing meat side up. Cover grill and continue cooking an additional 10 minutes until ribs are tender.

The center of activity is Williston, N.D. Williston was recently dubbed the fastest-growing small city in America. From April 2010 to July 2011, the population grew 8 percent to 25,000, faster than any area, according to new U.S. Census estimates.

There are thousands of new homes being permitted this year and several commercial projects anchored by hotels, convenience stores and restaurants. The city is spending a lot of money on big-ticket civic projects:

• $110 million for a regional water system, plus a $40 million water treatment plant upgrade.• $50 million for a wastewater treatment plant• $70 million for a wellness center• $100 million for a truck reliever route• $100 million to $150 million to relocate and expand the airport.

That’s half-a-billion dollars of construction in one town. And the government can pay for it all.

The state of North Dakota is making about $173 million monthly from oil drilling, or $2 billion a year. That sum is expected to grow as more oil wells are put into the ground. Including taxes on oil and gas coming out of the wells, the state is projected to generate about $6 billion a year in direct oil-mining tax revenues.

All of the attention may lead some people to think that the chance

to make money is gone. After all, it’s not going to be easy to buy land or North Dakota companies on the cheap from unsuspecting locals. There’s still opportunity, especially for skilled trades like doctors, lawyers, dentists, electricians and plumbers. Businesses that directly support the oil fields, like parts suppliers, civil engineering firms and trucking companies, also are in demand.

Of course, there are challenges to doing business in North Dakota. Finding labor is tricky. The state’s unemployment rate is 3.2 percent, the lowest in the country. And it is expensive to find a place to live. A studio apartment in Kenmare, N.D., with a population of 6,000, runs about $3,000 a month.

Infrastructure like water, roads, housing, retail are in

need. Most of these towns

don’t have basic amenities like a

movie theater or a sit-down restaurant.

Bakken Rig Activity FactsThe Bakken/Three Forks Shale system is located in the Williston Basin in the northeastern part of Montana and northwestern North Dakota. Below are facts reflecting the type of data and analysis you can expect to find in the area.

During 2010, rig activity increased almost linearly, with the monthly rig count growing from 70 to 150 units. This trend continued during the first half of 2011 as well. In the short run, we expect the rig count to steadily increase until 2013, reaching averages of 170, 200 and 210 rigs in 2011, 2012 and 2013, respectively, followed by an 8% decline beginning in 2014.

While activity in the northern part of Mountrail County will continue steadily, Bakken’s incremental growth will be driven by activity in the western area of North Dakota. Besides being less developed, this western area suits long lateral (30 stages) and smart drilling. In this scenario, NASQ estimates 2,950 million barrels of oil equivalent best estimate reserves, plus 1,800 million of additional reserves.

Angela has been involved in the Chamber of Commerce and a number of local groups and associations. She currently chairs the Downtown Committee of the Chamber, and serves

as a board member of Williston Area Development Foundation. In 2010 Angela found herself leaving her job as a buyer for the Target corporation and moving back to Williston, after she found the perfect building for her new love. She took control of her destiny and control of her career,

Over the years with Target as a buyer, Angela was able to build a system and perfect her ability to go out and find product. Now her store Cooks On Main sells a wide variety of kitchen supplies. “Over 25% of our business is custom orders” Angela explained. When customers come in they will be greeted with a wide variety of products. However, if you are looking for something that you can’t find just ask. You ask and Angela goes to work, she will hunt down exactly what you are looking for and bring it in for you.

Angela has recently renovated a kitchen classroom in her store. Starting this summer customers will be able to attend customizable cooking classes in the kitchen. These classes will vary on price but from what we have seen will guarantee a great atmosphere. The setting will be very intimate with seating for 6-8 people. “I grew up in a house where the Kitchen was the heart of any gathering and we have a great wealth of talent and knowledge in the culinary field here in Williston”.
