Midwest Hoosier native Bruce (Boodie) Hecklinski had never heard of a paddlefish before two months ago. Until then the largest fish he had seen alive or caught was a perch out of Lake Michigan.

Oil drilling technology leaps, clean energy lags AP Energy Writer | JONATHAN FAHEY

Technology created an energy revolution over the past decade - just not the one we expected.

By now, cars were supposed to be running on fuel made from plant waste or algae - or powered by hydrogen or cheap batteries that burned nothing at all. Electricity would be generated with solar pan-els and wind turbines. When the sun didn’t shine or the wind didn’t blow, power would flow out of batteries the size of tractor-trailers.

Fossil fuels? They were going to be expensive and scarce, relics of an earlier, dirtier age. But in the race to conquer energy technology, Old Energy is winning. Oil companies big and small have used technol-ogy to find a bounty of oil and natural gas so large that worries about running out have melted away. New imaging technologies let drill-ers find oil and gas trapped miles underground and undersea. Oil rigs “walk” from one drill site to the next. And engineers in Houston use remote-controlled equipment to drill for gas in Pennsylvania.

The result is an abundance that has put the United States on track to become the world’s largest producer of oil and gas in a few years. As domestic production as soared, oil imports have fallen to a 17-year low, the U.S. government reported Thursday. And the gush-ers aren’t limited to Texas, North Dakota and the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Overseas, enormous reserves have been found in East and West Africa, Australia, South America and the Medi-terranean. “Suddenly, out of nowhere, the world seems to be awash in hydrocarbons,” says Michael Greenstone, an environmental eco-nomics professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The consequences are enormous. A looming energy crisis has turned into a boom. These additional fossil fuels may pose a more acute threat to the earth’s climate. And for renewable energy sources, the sunny forecast of last decade has turned overcast. Technological advances drove a revolution no one in the energy industry expected. One that is just beginning.

The new century brought deep concerns the world’s oil reserves were increasingly concentrated in the Middle East - and beginning to run out. Energy prices rose to re-cord highs. Climate scientists showed that reliance on fos-sil fuels was causing troubling changes to the environment.

“The general belief was that the end of the oil era was at hand,” says Daniel Yergin, an energy historian and author of “The Quest: Energy, Security and the Remaking of the Modern World.” As a result, Wall Street, Silicon Valley and governments were pouring money into new companies developing alternative forms of ener-gy that promised to supply the world’s needs without polluting.

But while the national focus was on alternatives, the oil and gas industry was innovating too. New technology allowed drillers to do two crucial things: find more places where oil and gas is hid-den and bring it to the surface economically. Large oil companies such as Exxon, Chevron, Shell and BP turned up huge discov-eries offshore in ultra-deep water with the help of faster comput-ers and better sensors that allowed them to see once-hidden oil deposits. Onshore, small drillers learned how to pull oil and gas out of previously inaccessible underground rock formations.

For most of the oil age, drillers have looked for large underground pools of oil and gas that were easy to tap. These pools had grown over millions of years as oil and gas oozed out of what is known as source rock. Source rock is a wide, thin layer of sedimentary rock - like frost-ing in the middle of a layer cake - that is interspersed with oil and gas.

An engineer named George Mitchell and his company, Mitch-ell Energy, spent years searching for a way to free natural gas from this source rock. He finally succeeded when he figured how to drill horizontally, into and then along a layer of source rock. That allowed him to access the gas throughout a layer of source rock with a single well. Then he used a process known as hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” to create tiny cracks in the rock that would allow natural gas to flow into and up the well.

The United States, which was facing a gas shortage five years ago, now has such enormous supplies it is looking to export the fuel in large volumes for the first time. The common wisdom in the in-dustry was that the process Mitchell had invented for natural gas wouldn’t work for oil. Oil molecules are bigger and stickier than gas molecules, so petroleum engineers believed it would be impossible to get them to flow from source rock, even if the rock were cracked

by fracking. But Mark Papa, the CEO of a small oil and gas compa

ny called EOG Resources, didn’t accept that. “The numbers were too intriguing, the prize was so big,” he remembered. He thought there could be as much as a billion barrels of oil within reach in Tex-as, North Dakota and elsewhere - if only he could squeeze it out.

In 2003, he had a “eureka!” moment while poring over pictures of rock. Sections of a 40-foot-long column of source rock had been run through a CT scanner, the same type used to peer into the human body. He saw something in the source rock sections the rest of the industry didn’t know was there: a network of pas-sageways big enough for oil molecules to pass through. Papa believed the passageways could act like rural roads for the oil to travel through. Fracking could then create superhighways for the oil to gather and feed into a pipe and up to the surface.

EOG began drilling test wells, and in 2005, Papa got some results from one in North Dakota that made him realize oil could flow fast enough to pay off. “It was kind of like holy cow,” he says. “My first thought was we need to replicate this, make sure it’s not a freak result.”

It wasn’t. Papa thought the Eagle Ford might hold 500,000 bar-rels of oil. The Department of Energy now predicts it holds 3.4 billion. Some even expect 10 billion, which would make it the big-gest oil field in U.S. history. But even after drillers figured out how to find oil and gas deep offshore and in onshore source rock, they still needed to develop technology that would make it economical.

At the tip of every oil or gas drill is a rotating mouth of sharp teeth that chews through rock. In the past, these drill bits could only dig straight down. Now they are agile enough to find and follow narrow horizontal seams of rock.

And behind the drill bit, attached to a long line of steel known as the “drill string,” is an array of sensors that collect data about the rock and underground fluids. The data, which is sent to engineers via fiber-optic cables, is run through su-percomputers as powerful as 30,000 laptops to create a picture of the earth thousands of feet below the surface.

“To the layman, it looks like dumb iron, but you’d be shocked about what’s inside,” says Art Soucy, president of global products and services at Baker Hughes. When the drilling is done, the rig itself can “walk” a hundred feet or so to an-other location and start drilling again. In the past, rigs had to be taken down and reassembled, which could take days.

“It has made possible things that were unthinkable 10 years ago,” says Claudi Santiago, managing director at First Re-serve Corp., a private-equity firm that invests in energy com-panies. Renewable technologies have had their successes. Solar now generates six times more electricity in the U.S. than it did a decade ago, and wind produces 18 times more. Most major automakers offer some type of electric vehicle.

But the outlook for wind, batteries and biofuels is as dim as it’s been in a decade. Global greenhouse gas agreements have fizzled. Daz-zling discoveries have been made in laboratories, and some of these may yet develop into transformative products, but alternative energy technologies haven’t become cheaper or more useful than fossil fuels.

It’s certainly possible the world will change direction again in the next five years. After all, experts didn’t see the oil and gas boom coming five years ago. There are hundreds of compa-nies, including fossil fuel giants, working on renewable-en-ergy projects. And despite growing supplies of oil, prices re-main high because developing nations are consuming more.

But EOG’s Papa says oil and gas companies will just in-vest in even more sophisticated technology. He estimates that current techniques pull only 6 percent of the oil trapped in source rock to the surface. Learning to double that would yield yet another enormous trove of hydrocarbons.

“Now we go into the next phase of technology,” he says. “How are we going to get the rest of it out of the ground?”

Outdoor entertaining made easy

Patio season has arrived, and opportunities for outdoor social gatherings will abound in the coming months. Birthdays, graduations, showers, holidays and any other reasons to enjoy warm weather will call for unique outdoor party solutions that differ from indoor events. Here are a few ideas to make al fresco entertain-ing a snap.

FRuiTy ReFReshmenT

Enjoying seasonal fruits is one of summer’s most delicious pleasures, so incorporate fresh fruits into every aspect of your gathering. Go beyond the tradi-tional fruit plates and garnishes, and sweeten regular water with fresh fruits for an invigorating beverage that is perfect for the patio. With a few whole fruits, ice and a high-per-formance blender like the Vitamix Profession-al Series 750, which features five pre-pro-grammed settings - including one for smoothies, a perfect summer concoction is seconds away. To make a Strawberry Agua Fresca, simply blend one cup of fresh strawber-ries, four cups of cubed, seeded watermelon, three fourths cup of lemon juice and two cups of ice to create a rejuvenating and healthy whole-food juice beverage that your guests are sure to enjoy.

GeT GRillinG

Many people associate summer gatherings with grilling, but that doesn’t mean your menu options need to be limited to the typical hamburgers and hot dogs found at most cookouts. Explore the hundreds of recipes for more health-conscious grilled cuisine, including salmon, shrimp, veggie burgers and chicken. Don’t just reserve the grill for entrees, either. For an appetizer, try grilling slices of ciabatta or pita bread and topping with chopped tomatoes, basil and olive oil to create an easy bruschetta. Season and toss sliced, cooked potatoes on the grill to make your own steak fries, and use your Vi-tamix blender to create a number of dipping sauces and homemade condiments. Roasting vegetable skewers makes for a light but flavorful side, and you can even use

rosemary sprigs as the skewers for extra zest. The grill is a versatile tool for summer entertaining, so use it to its full potential this season!

Outdoor dinner parties are typically less formal events, but some instances still call for place settings and arranged seating. To create a fun, light atmosphere that is still organized and thoughtful, use colorful place mats and napkins to offset a white or neutral tablecloth. There’s no need to break out the fine china, either. Opt for bamboo or melamine plates and bowls instead,

which are available in a wide array of colors and designs. Bamboo serv-ing utensils can create a beach-like feel, and reusable, recy-clable plastic silverware is an affordable alternative to disposable cutlery. Have fun with table decorations and fill glass bowls and vases with flowers, col-orful stones and floating candles for an attractive, summery ta-ble setting in no time. Add pretty citro-nella candles

for decoration that will also keep your table bug-free.

Many summer soirees carry on past sunset, so lighting your patio area is important. With hundreds of options available for any outdoor area and budget, you can create whatever atmosphere you prefer. Solar lamps are a smart, energy-efficient way to light the walking and seating areas, while Chinese lanterns hanging in the trees create a fun, party feel. Garden lights lining the driveway and walkways will direct attendees to and from the gathering areas safely, and an enclosed bonfire pit or portable fireplace is a great way to gather people for post-dinner revelry. The right mood will encourage guests to stay past dark and allow everyone to enjoy a warm summer evening.

Follow these few simple tips to create the perfect outdoor gathering, and you’ll be in the swing of summer entertaining in no time.

How to be the buyer every seller wants to deal with

For years, the real estate market has been a buyer’s world, with ample inventory, fewer quali-fied buyers, and highly motivated (read: desperate) sellers. This spring, some signs are pointing to a shift back toward a seller’s market. If you’re shop-ping for a home this spring and summer, chances are you’ll face increased competition from other buyers.

So how do you ensure you not only land the home of your dreams, but get the best possible price from the seller and the best possible mortgage deal from your lender? By be-coming the buyer every homeowner wants to sell to - a fi-nancially stable, credit-worthy, pre-approved purchaser.

“Just as lenders consider many factors beyond your credit score, when deciding whether to finance your home loan, sellers consider more than just the offering price when evaluating potential buyers,” says Barrett Burns, president and CEO of credit score model de-veloper VantageScore Solutions. “Buyers who can move quickly and decisively, who walk through the door with their financing lined up and their credit in good shape, are best positioned to stand above the competition this year.”

sTeps ToWaRd beinG a beTTeR buyeR

You can be a better buyer - one that will appear attrac-tive to both lenders and sellers - with some simple steps.

First, understand your credit score and the role it plays in the home buying process. While a good credit score can ease the bor-rowing process for home buyers, it’s not the only factor lenders

will use to gauge whether to approve you for a loan, Burns says.

“A credit score predicts the likelihood of whether a bor-rower might default in the first 24 months of a loan,” he notes. “But lenders will also consider how much of a down payment you bring to the table as a percentage of the purchase price, your income and your debt-to-in-come ratio when considering a mortgage application.”

Remember that lenders will pull your score from all three major credit bureaus, so it pays to check your credit re-port and score with all three. Reviewing your report and score allows you to catch and correct errors, and have a better idea of how potential lenders might view your

credit worthiness, and rest assured that obtaining this information does not impact your credit score.

Understanding your credit score is a more complex pro-cess than you might expect. You can test your knowl-edge about credit scores at www.CreditScoreQuiz.org, a website created by VantageScore Solutions and its partner, Consumer Federation of America.

When you have a handle on your credit, consider oth-er factors that can make you a better buyer, includ-ing how much you have to put down on a house.

The days of no-money down mortgages are virtually over, industry experts say. Today, even FHA borrowers will likely need to make a down payment. How much you need will depend on many factors, including the loan program you apply for and the price of the house you’re buying. Generally, it’s a good rule of thumb to save 20 percent of the purchase cost for a down payment.

Keep in mind, the more you put down, the more in-stant equity you’ll have, the lower your monthly pay-ment, and the better your chances of not needing private mortgage insurance (PMI), which can add hundreds of dollars to your monthly payment. If you’re able to put down more than a lender requires, a mortgage compa-ny may be willing to give you a pass on other issues on your application, such as a less-than-stellar credit score.

“Lenders and sellers are all looking for buyers who are ‘the complete package,’” Burns says. “While you should take care of your credit score, you shouldn’t obsess over it. Instead, look at it as an important part of the overall package of assets that can make you the kind of buyer everyone wants to work with.”

THE WILLISTON REVIEW PAGE 9LOCAL BUSINESS

Reinvent yourself: How to start your own (creative) business

Many graduates in creative fields like graphic design, interior de-sign or Web design are opting to start their own businesses. This is because recent figures show only a slight reduc-tion in the unemployment rate, and job growth is at its lowest in six months. So, how can you make your business a success?

Bruce McCain, director of career ser-vices for The Art Institute of Tampa, a branch of Miami International Uni-versity of Art & Design, and Kathleen Holland, director of career services for The Art Institute of Charleston, a branch of The Art Institute of Atlanta, share five essentials they identified as success factors in starting a business.

1. Self-assess and research. It is imper-ative that you are honest with yourself and truly understand what you are good at and what you enjoy doing. Do-ing a SWOT analysis (a way to analyze Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) is a great way of assessing that.

2. Know your niche. A business plan is highly recommended to help identify both those industries with a need for your services and your competition. This exercise will also help identify whether there might be a smaller and important niche market where your business can focus and be profitable.

“If you’re a graphic designer, will you be a generalist, offering services to all types of industries, or do you have specialized experience handling retailers that you can build on?” asks McCain.

Knowing your niche will enable you to develop a consistent brand identity in every aspect of your business. The business plan also sets the goals and objectives that will guide many of

your decisions.

3. To incorporate or not to incorporate. Many students in creative fields are familiar with taking on freelance work while still in school. But after graduation, it is important to formalize the business. It’s a good idea to invest in some legal and accounting advice to help you make the best decision about incorporation. There are significant advantages and disadvantages to each type of business structure.

4.

Develop a stream of business. New business owners often envision be-ing successful within a short period of time. Developing and building a business from the ground up takes time, energy and hard work, but it can be very rewarding. The industry research you did for your business plan will come in handy in determining what a realistic rate of growth means for your industry and area.

5. Network, network, network.

“I can’t stress enough the impor-tance of networking,” says Holland.

Networking may be your only means of marketing for quite some time - it is important to get in front of as many people as possible and give them your “elevator pitch” (a quick story about your business that you can say in 90 seconds or less). When meeting each person, make sure you take his or her business card; this comes in handy when writing a “nice to meet you” note the next day.

“Yes, you should write a quick note to each person you meet. In

this note, you should mention where you met them, refer to your conversation, and remind them what your business does and how it can be helpful to them,” Holland says.

It takes a lot of hard work to be a creative business owner and there are no shortcuts to success. So put in the time to reap the rewards.

In the Rearview: Recapping TalladegaContributed | Holly Cain, NASCAR.com

Many of NA-SCAR’s top Sprint Cup Series teams admittedly show up at Talladega Superspeedway filled with a healthy mixture of expectation and dread. But the sport’s largest track is a bastion of hope and wide-open potential for smaller teams, who know they stand as good a shot at winning on those unpredictable high banks as the consummate big-buck favorites.

That proved to be true Sunday as the small-bud-get, low-profile Front Row Motorsports team earned its first Cup victory with a feel-great 1-2 finish from drivers David Ragan and David Gilliland.

“These (tracks) and the road courses, we feel like, are our best shots to come and have a legiti-mate shot at winning,’’ Ragan said after the race. “The rest of our program we’re still working on and trying to get there.

“Obviously, some day we want to be an organization that can go and compete for wins on a weekly basis, but we’re not there yet. So to be able to come to these type of tracks, we definitely put a lot of preparation and a lot of emphasis on our speedway program and today we had two very fast race cars and were able to come home one-two.”

Changing lanes: While Ragan and his Front Row Motor-sports sweep certainly provided a feel-good story to the masses, it was a tough pill to swallow for a couple of drivers who felt the final restart was flawed.

Brad Keselowski asserted on his Twitter account following the race that it looked like Ragan illegally changed lanes before taking the green flag. And Martin Truex Jr. -- in response to Keselowski -- confirmed what he felt was a discrepancy in the lineup.

The reigning Cup champion Keselowski offered his con-gratulations to Ragan via Twitter after the race, but also

questioned the outcome and challenged fans to look at a replay of the final green-white-checkered restart.

“I’m happy as hell a small team won. Doesn’t change the fact the restart was blatantly wrong,’’ Keselowski tweeted.

To his credit, Ragan didn’t shy away from the controversy during his post-race press conference.

“Well, obviously Brad wanted to start on the outside, because he knew the same thing that I knew, that the outside lane had an advantage on the restart but he just didn’t want to listen to NASCAR,’’ Ragan said. “So NA-SCAR makes the call on where we line up at, and I listen to what NASCAR has to say. My spotter told me that’s what they radioed on the NASCAR channel, the crew chief said the same thing, and Brad was just trying to snooker us and get the preferred lane, and eventually he decided he should do the right thing and he restarted ninth and I restarted 10th, so there’s no controversy.”

Not again: It was yet another tough day for Stew-art-Haas Racing’s three cars, which left Alabama with

finishes of 27th (Tony Stewart), 32nd (Ryan Newman) and 33rd (Danica Patrick).

Team owner/driver Stewart was involved in the first mega-wreck of the day on Lap 43, forcing him to play catch-up in a hobbled car. Newman and Patrick looked to carry the flag for the organization and were running in the top 15, only to be collected in the other large multicar accident with five laps remaining.

Newman’s No. 39 Chevrolet bore the brunt of the damage in the massive crash with Kurt Busch’s No. 78 Chevrolet going airborne briefly and landing on Newman’s car’s hood.

No drivers were injured in the melee, but it was another

annoyance for Newman, who has been involved in several spectacular “Big Ones” in the closing laps at Talladega.

He’s back: After missing four races because of a back injury, Denny Hamlin said he expects to run the full event at Darlington Raceway this Saturday. He started Sunday’s race at Talladega and was replaced by Brian Vickers during a caution on Lap 24.
