You will find this a little hard to believe
after the topics discussed at the last
forum, but the Fire and Rescue service
reported a fire at Morse Road Whitnash
on the 19th March.
Thankfully there were no fatalities, but
the incident highlights what was being
voiced at the forum about parking
facilities in general, and inconsiderate
parking in particular.
Did you know that many safety
recalls on white goods result in a very
low return rate? Given that two fires
in Whitnash in recent months have
been linked to white goods, you are
encouraged to visit this website to
find out about safety recalls, and
check your own household goods:

them could get closer than 100 metres to the residence

Welcome to our new Mayor Cllr Parminder Singh Birdi.
two distinct roles, Civic Head and Chairman of
the Town Council. As Civic Head I hope to be
a good ambassador flying the Whitnash flag.
The role of Chairman of the Town council is a
much more difficult and varied one. Chairman
of Town Council has to ensure the efficient
running of the Town Council, and also build
relations with key stakeholders such as
principal local authorities, Police etc. I will
endeavour to deliver on both.
The strength of any Town is the involvement
and community spirit shown by its residents and
town’s organisations. . We are very fortunate tohave committed community minded
organisations and community spirited residents.
Your support is essential in developing your
Town’s neighbourhood plan and vision for the
next 20 years.
Our on-going priorities remain keeping
Whitnash a low crime area, fighting antisocial
behaviour and protecting the character and
environment of Whitnash by safeguarding
against overdevelopment and ensuring new
developments meet local need.
Finally, as someone said “ All Towns have
the capability of providing something for
everybody, only because, and only when, they
are created by everybody”.
It’s your Town, have your say to shape its
future.

I would like to thank the Whitnash Town
Council members for bestowing upon me the
great honour of the position of Town Mayor for
the second time. I hope that I can justify their
confidence shown in me by meeting their and
residents expectations.
I have a very difficult act to follow and would
like to acknowledge the good work done by the
outgoing Town Mayor, Cllr Adrian Barton and
his consort in fostering great community spirit
in Whitnash.

The Town Council and the DistrictCouncillors raised the concerns when thecommission suggested that Whitnash be splitfor electoral purposes and parts be joined withBishops Tachbrook.
Over three hundred letters and e-mails werereceived about the whole review of the district, virtually all comments received were about therecommendations for Whitnash and BishopsTachbrook. Residents from the town and thosefrom Bishops Tachbrook made it quite clearthat they were not in favour of the split. Manycommented on the support given to the town bythe Town Council and local community groupsand all were against the dropping of theWhitnash name for the wards. Comments werealso made about an Un-elected body makingrecommendations and ignoring what memberselected by the people had suggested.

August visit from Weilerswist
Our friends from Weilerswist will be
visiting Whitnash at the end of August
and we have a schedule of events
organised for their enjoyment. This
year we are pleased to hear that they will
be bringing several teenagers who have
taken an interest in joining the Twinning
to meet people of their own age in
Whitnash. We are looking for families
who would be prepared to host these
young people especially if you have
teenagers who would be interested in
going on a return trip next year.
We are always looking for new
members to come and join in the fun
that we have both here and abroad. If
you feel that you would be interested
in joining and/or hosting a couple of
people (young or old) for a few days
then please contact Rob Margrave on

Whitnash Medical CentreSUMMER WILL ARRIVE SOON…HOPEFULLY!!
We’re coming up to that time of year where we need tostart thinking about protecting our skin. Even in the UKthe sun can cause a lot of damage to our skin andEVERYONE is at risk. Even during cloudy days UV rayscan be present. There are some people who are at morerisk e.g. children and those with fair skin and blue eyes.
There are two main types of damaging UV sunlight –UVA and UVB.
UVA - These rays penetrate deeper into the skin andcause damage to the middle layer of skin (known as thedermis). This part of the skin contains the elastic tissuesthat help skin stay stretchy. When UVA damages theseso wrinkles develop and the skin ages. UVA raysincrease the risk of skin cancer too.
UVB - These rays are absorbed in the top layer of skin (the epidermis) and cause skin to tan or burn. Sunburn is therefore a sign that you are putting your skin at risk as UVB rays increase the risk of skin cancer as well as UVA.
Melanin in the skin (the coloured pigment) does helpto protect your skin against damage by UV rays so tannedskin shows that the skin has been exposed to a lot ofdamaging rays. Melanin helps stop you burning BUT ITDOES NOT STOP THE HARMFUL EFFECT OF THESUN – THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A HEALTHYTAN.
Sunburn - This is due to short-term overexposure of theskin to the sun. It causes red, hot, painful skin for severaldays after which the skin may peel. Soothing creams canhelp (calamine or after-sun lotions) and you may need totake paracetamol or ibuprofen to help with the pain. If indoubt, ask a pharmacist or a doctor for advice.
Skin Cancer - There are 3 main types of skin cancer
2) Cover up.Hats are particularly important as the face andneck are most at risk of sun damage. Wear loosetightly woven clothes which stop the rays gettingthrough and don’t forget your eyes – wear sun-glasses that have a CE mark showing they pro-vide UV protection
3) Use a high protection factor sunscreen. Sun-screens with a factor of less than 15 do not givemuch protection at all. The greater the protectionfactor (SPF) the better the protection given. Alsocheck that it protects against BOTH types of raysso UVA and UVB. Don’t forget around the eyes, tips of ears and scalp (if not wearing a hat) andtops of feet.
It works best if applied 20-30minutes beforegoing into the sun and you need to reapply fre-quently – at least every 2 hours and always afterswimming. This needs to be more often in chil-dren.
TAKE HOME MESSAGE – have fun in the sun but take care!
Dr KE Holtby(based on patient.co.uk leaflet on sun and health)

and the majority of these are caused by excessiveexposure to the sun. Multiple episodes of sunburn arevery risky especially if it happens in childhood soPLEASE PROTECT YOUR CHILD’S SKIN. Damagedskin cells are at greater risk of becoming abnormal andcancerous in later life.
If you have any moles or spots on your skin that youare concerned about then get them checked by a doctor asall types of skin cancer are treatable if caught earlyHow can I protect my skin?
1) Stay out of the sun as much as possible when it isat its strongest (between 11am and 3pm) – don’t forgetthat water, sand, concrete and snow all reflect the sun.You can get burnt up a mountain and in a swimming pool!.

Pets Corner
Dental disease is probably one of the
most common diseases that we see in cats
and dogs. Signs of dental disease in dogs
and cats include reluctance to eat, pain
and halitosis.
Its very important to regularly check
your pet's teeth. Most vets will perform a
dental check as part of the pet's annual
health check or a routine consultation.
Many owners also inspect their pet's teeth
on a regular basis.
Abnormalities spotted during dental
checks include missing teeth, broken
teeth, diseased teeth, tarter
accumulations and gum disease. In many
cases the treatment for broken or
diseased teeth involves extraction. Tarter
accumulation and gum disease are the
main causes of halitosis. In most cases
removal of the tarter by scaling will lead
to a dramatic improvement in the pet's
halitosis. Sometimes gum infections will
be treated with antibiotics and other
topical treatments. These will generally
further improve the halitosis and make
the pet's mouth much more comfortable.
As with most diseases prevention is
better than cure. A small but significant
number of pet owners do clean their pet's
teeth. There are also a whole range of
dental diets and treats that go some way
towards reducing the formation of tarter
and development of gum disease.
If you feel your pet's breath smells less
pleasant that it used to its worthwhile
getting your vet to check their teeth.

Whitnash Library is the scene of a host offamily fun this summer and a chance forparents of children, from babies to 11 year olds,to get them into reading.

Babies can join a library as soon as they areborn. The Bookstart Bear Club is like a loyaltyscheme for young library users aged five andunder which allows them to collect paw printson their cards every time they go to a library. This gives youngsters the chance to pick upcertificates as they go to the library, encouraging them to read and learn.

We held our latest Neighbourhood Watchmeeting on 19th March at the coffee morning atWhitnash Sports and Social Club and I attendedthe Community Forum the same evening. Thetheme this time was about being careful givingout information about yourself. If you are likeme and love to chat! You have to be carefulwhat you tell people about yourself. Tellingpeople you live on your own, are going onholiday, where and when and that you will bestaying with family over Easter is fine if youknow the person. Telling a stranger during achat on the bus is not. People hopefully knowabout the danger of giving out information onsocial media sites but chat elsewhere can bedangerous too.

Traffic Matters…!
There has been a change in the system
by which motorists are dealt with for
offences committed in relation to motor
vehicles. Regardless of whether you are
stopped by an officer undertaking traffic
duties or you leave your vehicle and are
prosecuted for offences such as causing an
obstruction you will receive a letter
through the post giving you a number of
options in relation to the offence you are
suspected of committing. The choices can
be; paying a fine and taking the points (if
the offence warrants points) or paying a
fine and undertaking a course (relating to
the offence committed such as a speed
awareness course) this instead of taking
the points or having the matter heard at
court if you feel you want to contest the
fact that the office believes you have
committed an offence.
Closer to home, the Whitnash SNT
Team have been reporting owners and
vehicles for causing obstruction to the
pavements notably around schools. Police
advise that if you park inconsiderately for
example not leaving the space of a double
buggy to get past your vehicle, if you
choose to park on the pavement then do not
be surprised when you get a letter through
the post requesting you pay the fine
attributed to causing an obstruction. We
will take photos and offer them as
evidence.

Pigeon mail….
In the Golf Lane / Box Close Whitnash
area we have been dealing with reports
from numerous sources that they have
found dead pigeons which have obviously
been shot by what is believed to be an air
gun or air rifle.
We are looking for any information as to
who may be responsible for this. These
pigeons appear to have been shot in a public
place and as such it is an offence which
could lead to prosecution moreover, a
member of the public could easily be
injured; a member of the public was in the
street as a pigeon was shot and was almost
hit by the bird as it fell.
Please contact Whitnash SNT with any
information.

Local Hero wins Essential Building AwardA Whitnash businessman, who also showed
heroics following the recent armed raid on a local
shop, has scooped a prestigious award, along with his
business partner.
Jason Parkes (right) and his colleague Lee Penton
(left), founders and owners of Warwickshire
Essential Developments, a local construction
company, were nominated by their client and
selected as finalists for an award of Building
Excellence.
The finalists were invited to a ceremony on Friday
8 March 2013 at the District Council offices in
Stratford-upon-Avon.
Builders, architects and owners of developments
were drawn from a field of more than 2,000
completed projects in the District, with an
independent judging panel choosing the finalists for
each category.
Warwickshire Essential Developments, along with
Frank Price Architects, won first prize in the ‘Re-
Generation of the Derelict Property’ category, for
their conversion of a derelict building on
Birmingham Road in Stratford into 3 stunning new
apartments.
The awards celebrate building excellence across
the full range of building sectors, not only highlight
excellence in build quality and workmanship, but
also recognise team working, sustainable design and
technical innovation.
A few days after receiving this award, Jason was
the first person to enter the One Stop shop in Acre
Close, where he comforted both staff and customers
until the emergency services arrived.
All in all a week to remember!
