Copenhagen County's new senior highschool in Nærum, a suburb ofCopenhagen, is a result of an open archi-tects’ competition held in 2000. The buil-ding is located in the centre of Nærum’sbusiness area.

The fundamental architectural ideabehind the building is a compact buildingwith all classrooms and study centerslocated around a large central space – thesquare. This structure allows education totake many different forms. The architec-ture therefore reflects modern education,

and our world of constant change, whichcannot be forced into static educationaland teaching situations.

The large square, which is a multi-pur-pose room with a high roof, contains thecommon functions of a canteen, libra-ry/study center and lecture halls. Thesquare is encircled by buildings/class-room clusters on three floors, on threesides of the square. On the fourth side isthe main entrance.

Calm educational environment

The classroom clusters, all internal constructional units and supporting constructions are made of sand coloured concrete elements all basedon AALBORG WHITE® cement. Theconcrete surfaces all have shutteringboard textures. The texture has beenproduced by laying special plasticmats with a wood structure at thebottom of the steel moulds.

The study areas/centers are in the cor-ners between the heavy classroomclusters and the light glass facadestowards the square. The study centersface the square and receive daylightvia the square's skylights.

The senior high school's layout givesshort connecting routes and a func-tion based zoning, from the square'sactive and recreational zone via thedecentralized study centers to thecalm educational environment of theclassrooms and the library.

The external expression is characte-rized by the light and fragmentedexternal climate screen, which is con-structed as a cladding of 22 mm heattreated pine and drips of aluminumand creates a fine contrast to theheavy and calm concrete constructioninside the building. This creates aninterplay between wood and con-crete – a well balanced and vibranthigh quality material-aesthetic expe-rience.

The combination of a light externalscreen and a heavy inner core givesthe building a very comfortable natu-ral indoor climate which requiresminimum energy consumption forartificial heating and cooling.

A colouring concept with unlimited possibilitiesAALBORG WHITE® cement provides aninnovative solution for ART CONCRETEthrough creating naturally colouredyet economical floor finishes. Artconcrete is a colouring concept forAALBORG WHITE ® concrete surfaces.A specially made solution is appliedto the AALBORG WHITE® cement sur-face that impregnates the concrete, forming a variety of permanent colours.

The colouring concept can be appliedexternally and internally to walk-ways, entrances, driveways, livingrooms, bathrooms, patios, high traffic areas and even vertical sur-faces. Applying art solution to white portland cement can create animpressive signature with brightercolours, a more flexible colour crea-

tion and a durable and permanent colouring for any kind of concreteapplication. It will not chip, peel orflake. What is, however, a little bitspecial with this concept is that youcan also create your own styles, patterns, pictures and shades by mixing and matching the availablecolours. You can even create diffe-rent colouration patterns on thesame job with this concept.

In Malaysia, a number of art concretedesigns have been added to AAL-BORG WHITE® cement. This includesart concrete on a white concretefloor at the Ipoh InternationalSchool, art concrete on a pre-cast terrazzo and art concrete on a whitemortar panel.

based SCC

The surface of road barriers normally exhibits blowholes to some extend, as seen on the left. Using thedeveloped SCC, the customer now obtains a perfect surface finish each time, as seen on the right.

RDC Research and Development Center

Guidelines for the development ofwhite Self Compacting Concrete orSCC were published in the folder”AALBORG WHITE® based Self Com-pacting Concrete” in 2004.

Since 2004, the expertise at RDC andthe principles described in the folderhave been used to support customersdeveloping AALBORG WHITE® basedSCC‘s for a variety of applications.

Most recently, an AALBORG WHITE®

based SCC was developed at RDC to provide a consistent high qualitysurface finish on white road barriersfor the M3 freeway project nearCopenhagen.

The developed SCC mix was origi-nally intended for pumping and trialcastings. However, it has proven thatit can produce flawless surfaces whenpoured as well.

Second victory in a row

Aalborg Portland's white cement custo-mer PRB has again won the ”VendéeGlobe” yacht race. The single-handedround the world race is held every fouryears and starts from Les Sablesd'Olonne, south of Nantes in France. This

was the fifth Vendée Globe. It is a non-stop round the world race, going aroundthe Antarctic and returning to Les Sablesd'Olonne. The 60 foot monohull boats, which are 18.28 m long, 5.55 m wideand weigh 8.5 tons, are crewed by justone person.

PRB's boat won with the time of 87 days10 hours 47 minutes and 55 seconds, which is more than 5 days faster than theold record set by the same boat in 2001.

This time the boat was skippered by the33-year-old Vincent Riou. When he crossedthe finish line in the harbor at Les Sablesd'Olonne on the night of 3 February, hewas welcomed by a special firework displayand by 10,000 enthusiastic spectators who

had been following the exciting race.

It is the first time that the race has beenwon by the same boat twice. This is animpressive achievement as the winningboat is ”old” and was not designed forthis year’s race.

Vincent Riou felt very privileged to havebeen chosen to sail the boat in this race, which many call ”the Everest of yachtracing”. He would have been satisfiedwith just competing as successfully aswas possible. And now, just back on landagain, he has declared that he is ready toparticipate in the race again in four yearstime.

Diamond Masonry – a faster, better and cheaper solution

A white cement mortar product basedon AALBORG WHITE® is being marke-ted in the Philippines under the nameDiamond Masonry. The product is usedas a final surface treatment for brickand concrete before surfaces are painted.

In the Philippines, surfaces traditionallygo through a series of processes beforewalls are finally painted. UsingDiamond Render saves both time andmeans lower material costs than thetraditional method. The treatment canalso be completed much faster, soshortening construction times.

Diamond Render is used as a cheaperversion of skimcoat. A certain amountof filler and additives are added to thecement which gives much greater resistance to drying out cracking thanpure white portland cement.

At the Westgrove Heights project inSta. Rosa, Laguna, Philippines, thearchitect was so impressed withDiamond Masonry that he specified itfor all wall finishes. Lower walls weretop coated with pastel colours afterDiamond Masonry plastering whilethe upper walls and ends were pureDiamond Masonry in white.

The Australian domestichousing industry has em-braced AALBORG WHITE®

cement as an aestheticallypleasing alternative to local cements. In Australia’snorthern state of Queens-land, affectionately known

to the locals as ”The Sunshine State”,the emphasis is on bright and fresh colours.

Aalborg ”Bricklayers White Cement”gives architects and builders the ability toemphasize the style and colour of claybricks by creating a beautiful contrastwith the pure white cement mortar. Inthe rapidly growing suburbs aroundBrisbane, the construction industry has

seen an explosion of multi-dwelling housing estates. Architects, builders andpotential home owners are looking forproducts that will give their structuresindividuality. Aalborg ”Bricklayers WhiteCement” is now fulfilling their require-ments as locally produced cements areonly available in grey or ivory.

In the Darling Downs area west ofBrisbane, about twenty-five houses amonth are built using AALBORG WHITE®

cement as the premium ingredient in thepure white mortar. Potential home buil-ders can now see the aesthetic benefitsof using this products and are deman-ding the brilliance of Aalborg”Bricklayers White Cement” in the con-struction of their homes.
