David Hessler - Exalted Ruler

ER, Dave Hessler; PDDGER, Kathy Grant,

Treasurer, Tracy Bagdon serve lunch to the ENF Scholars visiting Santa

Monica during their US tour.

Wow! I can't believe I'm halfway through my year as Exalted Ruler.

I'm so grateful for all the help and support I have had along the way. Thank you to all my officers, and congratulations on our 3rd place finish in the recent Ritual Competition. Great job to our Membership Committee, especially Barbara Taylor, who continues to bring in new members and grow the Good Time Lodge. (11 new members this month!) There has been such excitement about Elkdom and I am proud to be your E.R. Thank you to our volunteers for all events throughout this year.

Whether its cooking on Thursdays, setting up tables and chairs, or cleaning up, there has been no shortage of help. To everyone who has chaired an event, you have entertained our members, and made this Lodge a fun and safe place. Thank you to my First Lady, Colleen Hessler for all her delicious desserts and my mom, Maureen and Aunt Sharon for cooking our many dinners. Finally, a huge thank you to our award-winning Whisper staff who work tirelessly, spending upwards of 60 hours on a single issue.

I couldn't have done this without all of you. I look forward to the rest of my year, the many events on our calendar in the future, and I look forward to seeing you at Westchester Lodge #2050!

Thank you to our Chili Cookers! We recognize it takes time and money to participate!

My Fellow Elks and Ladies of the Elks,

“WE SURVIVED RITUAL COMPETITION!!!”

And, we came in 3rd overall!

Our Lecturing Knight, Sylvia Thoma, was near perfect in her word accuracy and did us proud placing 3rd as well. Tania Morin, our beloved Chaplain, placed 1st with her dominant presentation. And, our dedicated coach, Dan Baccelliere, placed 1st in reciting our 11th hour toast.

What an amazing team we have! Many thanks to everyone for the mutual support, especially Dan for the excellent coaching.

This was my first time attending and competing in Ritual, and my knees were shaking like a leaf! While my part was not perfect, I now know what to expect for any future competitions.

Go Westchester! You were amazing, and we are so proud of you!

Redondo Beach: Wait until next year!

Peace & blessings always~Fraternally yours,Angel Valenzuela“And Justice for All!”

I’m very proud and honored to announce that several members of our Lodge placed 1st

through 3rd in the competition. Our very own new Leading Knight, PER Patty Crockett, did an amazing job and placed 3rd. She was very animated and engaging in her presentation

From the Car Show Committee

As the sun rose on September 11th 2021, the day did not disappoint.A beautiful day unfolded as the sound of engines roared down Manchester! The 80+ cars that came were stunning! The crowd grew and grew and we estimate we still had an impressive attendance of over 600 people throughout the day.

Kiki kicked us off with a beautiful national anthem, Jackie Levine, Fireball Tim and Ken Vela entertained us in their DJ lounge and I think they may have eaten just as much ice cream as they sold….We paid tribute to the 20th anniversary of 9/11, ate our NEW weight in chili, some floated away in the beer garden; and we ended the day with a special award ceremony honoring the passing of Randy Hessler.

For the car show team of superstars, it has become our mission to not just show classic cars, but create an event for all ages, men, women, kids and pets! It is our Lodge's open house to the public and largest event of the year. We invite people to come, look, eat, laugh, hang out and enjoy a beautiful day!

The best compliment we get is how our show is so unique and personable. We have combined what feels like a family reunion BBQ with a classic car show! There are people that look forward to seeing friends they have made at our Lodge over the years and there's plenty of seating to relax and stay. Everyone is so friendly and for the people that found us for the 1st time, we know they've been hooked and will be back year after year!

To the car show team, Ladies of the Elks and volunteers…thank you for all your hard work!Thank you so much if you attended, and if you missed it, see you for #22 in 2022!

All our best,Lisa, Deven, Willieand the "Car Show Superstars Team"

As I’m sure the other officers have mentioned we participated in the ritual competition the last weekend of September. I’m proud to be a part of this officer team and this Lodge. Everyone did a wonderful job representing Westchester Lodge 2050.

I don’t know if you feel the same way, but this year is just flying by and its already time to talk about Halloween.

The Westchester Lodge Officers came in 3rd place as a team at the South Central Coast District Ritual competition on Saturday. Some of our officers won individual awards. Congratulations to all of our officers!Dan Baccelliere won 1st place with the 11 o'clock Toast.Tania Morin won 1st place as Lodge Chaplain.Patty Crockett won 3rd place as Esteemed Leading Knight.Sylvia Thoma won 3rd place for Esteemed Lecturing Knight.

Join us on Sunday morning & afternoon, October 31 for Football and Halloween fun. Wear a costume as you root for your favorite team. Details are in the attached flyer. And if you’d like to volunteer to help with the event, please let me know.

Stay safe and healthy and I look forward to seeing you at the Lodge.

Fundraising:We have a new and exciting fundraiser going on. It is called The Reverse Drawing. We are calling for all hands on deck in helping us sell 300 tickets before November 10th. It takes a village to succeed. Our Chairwoman, Gwen Vuchsas has done all of the legal and we are 100% IRS approved. This ticket purchase supports the community programs of the LWE as well as help our ER with his 2021 wish list. Ticket purchases can be bought by friends, family, coworkers etc.

Here is how it works.Tickets are $100 each but the odds are favorable as there are only 300 tickets! Every 50th ticket pulled will win a gift cardvalued from $100 to $300 with the Final pull winning a cash prize of $10,000! Purchases can be Cash, Check or ZELLE.

We will have a reception at our Lodge on Sunday, November 14th for ticket purchasers to come snack and celebrate the festivities. This is a great opportunity for the public to see our Lodge and learn about The LWE and Elks. No, you do not have to be present to win but, you must be available via telephone to WIN the prizes.

We will be selling tickets in person at the Lodge on Tuesday & Thursday Evenings. If you are able to help us sell them (Elks and LWE) please contact us to be assigned your pack of 5 to sell. Greetings Ladies & Fellow Elks,

Happy Fall Y’all. Although for us this is normally a very warm time of year, the idea of longer evenings, cozy clothing, football and comfort food is welcoming. What is your favorite food for Fall? I think of spoon-friendly foods like chicken and dumplings, chicken and noodles, chili, stew and osso bucco with mashed potatoes. On that tasty note here is a Fall twist on the classic Old Fashioned. Enjoy!

We Hear You:The board has worked through the pandemic to keep things flowing for the LWE and we understand that change is hard for everyone. As you may or may not know our Lodge continues to be closed on Monday nights. Because of the hardships put on our Lodge during the worst of the Covid-19 shut down, we are doing our best to support what is best for our Lodge as well as keep membership meetings during the open hours of our Lodge. This was a decision that was brought to the members to vote on in our June meeting by all members present. We understand that there is a sound issue as our Lodge is open for football and libations. As we continue to work on getting the dynamics sorted, we appreciate your ongoing understanding and hope for your continued support.

Lodge Visit:Angel and I were able to make a quick and fun visit to the Indio Elks Lodge #1643 last month and had a great time meeting the members after their 9-11 event.

Celebrate:We are excited to celebrate our 2021 birthdays and are finally able to have The Ladies Birthday Dinner. Please join us at Cantalini’s on Wednesday, November 17 at 6:30 PM. Cost is $30 (pre-paid please) We cannot wait to celebrate with all of you. Please reach out to our birthday chairwoman Sharon Hledek (310) 245-9769 to pay for your seat.

Tell us your history with the Elks. I started as an Elk back in 1962 in San Francisco and then moved to Fresno where I was a candidate at their ritual. Eventually I moved down to Playa del Rey in the 80’s with an office next to Hacienda’s on Pershing. One day I walked into the Westchester Elks and

July 31st: Comedy Nightfor ENF

Bill Crowther was there and I asked him how I could become a member and he proposed me. I became ER in 1990 and again in 2000. I was an Esquire to DD, Frank Rocco in 2004. A State VP in 2011-2012 and a DDGER in 2015-2016. I was a part of many projects around the Lodge such as the expansion, the billboard, car show and others.

Do you have a favorite memory as an Elk? In 2003, I had my wedding reception there with Bunny. We now have 8 children and 24 grand and great grand children.

Tell us something most people don’t know. During my 1990 ER year, there was no billboard over the patio like there is now. Very few billboards are allowed in a residential area but with the help from a few Elk members on the board I was able to pass it to get installed as it serves as a community service fundraiser for the Elks which do so much for the area. Fun fact: Bunny’s real name is Miriam. She’s been called Bunny since she was a baby!

Your known around the Lodge for your World Famous pancakes. Tell us more about that. Sometime after my ER year, I brought it up to the PER’s as a fundraiser. I offered to make the pancakes and came up with the recipe. It has one secret ingredient which makes them delicious!

We will miss you Dale and Sandy Thompson

also, Deb Loss and Roger Lewis. We look forward To you visiting!

As I continue visiting Lodges around California, this is about the Lodges you can visit. These are all in Southern California; and, they would love to see you. If you have not been to the San Pedro Lodge, set a day aside and go down. It’s just about ½ hour drive (on a good day) from our Lodge. They are open every day and serve lunch and dinner on their beautiful patio. They have a full kitchen staff so it’s a bit more expensive. There is plenty of parking, so that’s not a problem. Just a reminder, their meetings are on Mondays, so keep that in mind.

If you are up for a little longer ride, head to the Santa Ana Lodge. They also have an entire kitchen staff, including a pastry chef, and no kidding, their member lounge is about as big as our Del Rey room and bar combined. They sold their Lodge in the city of Santa Ana for $26M and built a $13M Lodge. It’s beautiful; and they serve lunch and dinner daily. They meet on Tuesdays; but of course, you wouldn’t go that night as you would be at our meeting.

So, for those who want to take a day trip, you must go to the El Cajon Lodge. That’s one fun Lodge! They have a huge patio which is set up like Margaritaville; and it’s larger than our parking lot. Not sure when and what days they serve food; but it’s a great place to hang for an adult beverage. Try spending a weekend in San Diego and doing a Lodge crawl. Beside El Cajon, there is the San Diego Lodge, Poway Lodge (It’s a small Lodge so call to make sure they are open) and Chula Vista Lodge. I suggest you take a designated driver as there is a little distance between these Lodges; but all are worth visiting if you find yourself in the area.

Now that Lodges are opening up, visit them and spread some Elks love.
