The Wheel of the Year

The Wheel of the Year is a Neo-Pagan calendar that tracks the earth'snatural cycle of seasons. Within the Wheel are eight Sabbats, or fes-tivals. These festivals embody the birth. life, and death of the earthas it journeys on its infinite and circular path through the cosmos.Within this cycle. the light and the dark will embark on their yearlycourse where power is shifted and split between them. At its height, the light will spread its vibrant rays and produce life and fulfill-ment. At it lowest point, the light will give way to the darkness thatallows the land rest and dormancy. Though polar opposites. boththe light and the dark bring forth the gifts necessary for balance andharmony. Within the eight Sabbats balance is created. allowing usto celebrate the wonders and gifts brought about by each season.

Yule: Winter solstice. The Wheel begins deep within the darknessas the Goddess gives birth to the Horned God. In His infantstage. He represents the planted seed awaiting growth. Althoughthe earth appears dormant, the cycle of life has just been reborn

beneath its surface. Yule is a time for potential, growth, expec-tancy, rest, hope, healing, and new beginnings. This time ofdarkness enables us to go inside and reflect on our own potentialas well as the world's. Through rest and reflection, we can fullyenvision what gifts we might bring about at the sun's return.

Imbolc: February 2nd. The Horned God begins to grow andstrengthen, but is not yet at full power. Meanwhile, as the God-dess is healing from Her birth of the Homed God, She begins tocleanse Herself in preparation of Her return to the Maiden form.As the ice will soon thaw and the earth grow fertile once more, weare reminded of the journey that lies ahead and the preparationsneeded. Imbolc is a time for purification, dedication, cleansing, initiation, and preparation. While the sun begins to gain strength,we might take the opportunity to wipe away negativity-andopen up to the blessings and insight needed to move forward.

Ostara: Spring equinox. At this point on the Wheel, The HornedGod enjoys youthful vigor while the Goddess, now a youngMaiden, spreads Her fertility acrOSSthe land. With these eventsset in motion, the God may begin His courtship with the God-dess. Now that the sun is quickly growing in ,;trength and thesoil is fertile, the seed that once lay dormant has finally begunto sprout. Ostara is a time for balance, awakenings, fertility, and vitality. As night and day have found complete balance, weshould come to understand the many facets of ourselves in orderto create a balance for the long journey ahead.

Be/tane: May 1st. The Horned God has now entered into manhoodand joins the Maiden in both a sexual and spiritual union. AtHer fertile peak, the Maiden now prepares for Her transforma-tion into Mother. Beltane marks the fullest point of spring. Thesoil is flourishing with fresh growth and all things are full of life. While the sun is nearing its highest potential, we may now takethe liberty of celebrating our endeavors with those around us.Beltane is a time for unity, celebration, sexuality, growth, fertil-

ity, and love. The true spirit of the season calls us to enjoy everyaspect of our beauty and not to be ashamed of the gifts that webring to the universe.

Litha: Summer solstice. With the Goddess now ripe and pregnant, the Horned God is at His highest point of power. The earth andits inhabitants are now in full bloom and rich with energy. Sum-mer solstice is the counter to Yule on the Wheel now turning tolet balance commence. Summer solstice is a time for abundance, ripeness, passion, energy, and empowerment. With the harvestcoming soon, we must allow ourselves to celebrate the wonderswe have accomplished and trust that the rewards will soon bereaped.

Lammas: August 1st. The Horned God and His light are now begin-ning to fade. The Goddess does not mourn, for She knows withinHer lies His rebirth. As the land is full and ripe, the time for har-vesting has begun. Lammas is a time for acceptance, talent, full-ness, and improvement. The season brings out the opportunityfor us to learn about the great gifts we have received, and howwe might use these gifts to better ourselves and others.

Mabon: Autumn equinox. The Horned God is now in preparationfor His body to be received into the underworld. In its deep-est harvest, the earth gives forth its gifts in great abundance.Although the harvest is plentiful, the rich colors brought forthfrom summer solstice are now fading as the land is preparing forits slumber. Mabon is a time for thanks, preservation, reflection, preparation, and abundance. At this point of the cycle, we arereminded to give thanks for what we have received, both goodand bad, and to concentrate on the future.

Samhain: October 31st. The Horned God passes from one world tothe next and patiently awaits His rebirth. The Goddess, as a Crone, again prepares for Her birth of the Horned God. At the year's lastharvest, we are called to take account of all things received in our

lives. Sarnhain is a time for deep reflection, inventory, blessings, letting go, and trust. While the cycle nears completion, we mustfind the will to release the things in our lives that no longer holdbearings. In this release, through celebration, we will hope toreach divination.
