Does it matter?Everything passes, as wise Christian souls often say, and it is true. For lo! 'TisEaster! Halleluiah! My crème egg famine is at an end! By the time you readthis I shall be full of the joy of the Resurrection, mopping my brow with relief ifI have managed not to mess up the celebration of the biggest week in thechurch year and bouncing off the ceiling with the sugar and e-number hit frommultiple crème eggs. But, (in the immortal words of Cilla Black) "what's it all about Alfie?" I know thatlots of you think that God is a fairytale, that sin is vastly overstated and that theweird story of a crucified man coming back to life after three days in the tomb ina hot country is just - well, silly. But I also know that many people (apart fromgenuine atheists) have a hopeful inkling of something after death- somewherethat you might call "heaven"- and where you might find your loved ones waitingfor you.The only thing that gives this hope of life after death any substance at all isEaster.I wonder if you would be prepared to give your child away to strangers who youknew would kill him. If you are like me you would probably rather die yourselfthan do such a thing. The only circumstances under which we would do thatwould surely be circumstances of the utmost personal desperation or if say, insome nightmare scenario, the fate of the whole world depended on it.This is the terrible background of Easter. God sacrifices his son in order tosave the world from the devastation of death and the effects of our own sin (atiny word often assumed to mean sex or chocolate ice-cream or any combina-tion of the two but which is actually anything that we do that harms others, hinders us from living full and free lives and comes between us and God) Hissacrifice matters. Imagine meeting up with God after you die."What are you doing here unforgiven?""Well I didn't think it mattered much""You must think I'm a fool. I gave up my son to die for you, and you thought itdidn't matter?"The sacrifice and resurrection of the son, Jesus, is the only thing that gives ourhopes any substance at all. Because of Easter we have a chance of sins for-given and lives transformed now and in the hereafter. It's a hope and a prom-ise, not a cast iron scientific fact and we have to choose it.I like Crème eggs and I rejoice in the chance to guzzle them but I wouldn'tstake my life on them. Easter though is another matter.Best wishes

Walk Saturday 16/03/2013 - Churchover 10 milesWith atrocious weather we were not expecting a high turn out and we were spoton! Five intrepid souls met up to drive to Churchover and park by the old church. It was steadily drizzling and fields that had been dry and sandy when we hadrecced the walk were now claggy and muddy and wet as we left the village atthe end of Church Road, crossed the old stile and entered meadows throughlots of humps and bumps which was probably the site of a medieval village. Thefields slope steeply down to the fast flowing River Swift, although the surround-ing fields were almost wetter than the river. This whole walk was designed aroundthe pub in Churchover which was Italian owned and renowned for really greatfood but sadly the pub, like so many others, had closed down which meant arethink. We climbed up from the River Swift over more muddy fields to reachCestersover Farm and it's medieval village which is clearly marked on the mapbut not clearly marked in reality. We stuck to path edges rather than the foot-paths to try, in vain, to miss most of the clag. Our path emerged on the LutterworthRoad where we turned right and then after a few yards we took a right turn alonga mercifully quieter, dead end, road that goes to Little Walton. After a quarter ofa mile or so a field path took us off left and directly over a newly ploughed field. If we had used that path we would still be in the mire now so we clung to thehedge around the field and then rejoined the path at the far end. By now the rainhad slowed and then stopped and, unbelievably, we even had some sunshine. The path crossed several muddy fields to reach a lovely lake complete with twoislands and lots of ducks before we emerged in the old village of Pailton. Wewalked through the village and up the B4112 along a narrow verge and thenturned right up Cord Lane. The weather had improved as we made our wayover the manic M6 towards Easonhall. After a mile or so with no traffic we tooka field path left which lead us all the way past Tumley Hill to reach Welkin Farmand, more importantly, our pub stop at the magnificent Golden Lion. We debootedand probably should have detrousered but we were soon snug in the pub eat-ing sandwiches and drinking foaming Youngs Bitter. It's a great pub and such afriendly, Argentinian, landlady. Highly recommended and that helped us get overthe closure of the Churchover pub! So every cloud really does have a silverlining! In the afternoon we left the village on the Pailton Road before taking fieldpaths over to Harborough Magna. Behind the Old Lion pub(not recommended)we took a field path which goes directly through some front gardens acrossfields to reach a road over the busy M6 and then just after a nursing home weturned right on more muddy fields over a disused railway, over a bridge over theRiver Swift through fields full of inquisitive lambs and up to the cars in Churchover. This is a really great walk and one worth doing again when the fields and us area little less waterlogged Come and join us on the third Saturday each month. We normally meet at 10 at the village hall. Our next walks are as follows: - 20thApr Harlestone Firs (c.10 miles) - 18th May Braunston! (c.10 miles) - 29th JuneStrines Moor (c.11 miles)

NEWS FROM JETTY FIELDS.Now spring is on the way we have been able to continue work on JettyFields. The perimeter has been cut back, revealing a great deal of the fieldthat has been lost to brambles and other unwanted growth. It will now beeasier to mow and look after! We are not having sheep on the field at all thiswinter. The farmer has quite rightly refused to graze his sheep that are inlamb as the risk is too great if they should eat the grass contaminated bydog faeces. We are now having to pay a contractor to "top" the grass so thatwild flowers can grow through this spring. The water feature in the garden area has been cleaned out. We are going toprepare it for the water that we hope to pipe into it at some point this sum-mer. This will make this area even more attractive! The field area will also beused for the Village Weekend in mid July.CAN YOU HELP? WE HAVE A WORK MORNING ON SATURDAY 4THMAY FROM 9.00 TO 12.30. WE WOULD WELCOME YOUR HELP! DE-TAILS TO FOLLOW- ALSO LOOK AT THE NOTICE BOARD AT THE TOPOF THE PATH NEAR THE GREEN. THE MORE WHO CAN HELP WILLMEAN THE MORE THAT WE CAN ACHIEVE!Over to you! Andrew.

Distress Call.We are such a lucky village! We have the beautiful Jetty Fields area to usefor recreation and our enjoyment. The Parish Council are funding the mow-ing of the field paths and specific areas; they also supply an annual budgetso that minor tasks can be completed. The majority of the work is under-taken by a dedicated group of volunteers. These people work hard, keepcheerful and want to do the right thing for everyone.I am sure that most villagers know that we cannot put sheep on the fieldbecause of the dog mess. Sheep in lamb run the risk of aborting their youngif they eat the contaminated grass. We cannot harvest the hay and sell it forthe same reason. The winter grazing helps take off the old grass and thismakes way for the wild flowers in spring. The sheep keep down the thistlesand other unwanted plants and help in the age old cycle of growth in ourfields and meadows. As a local resident I beg all dog owners to clear upafter their animals. I recognise most do but if we lose this "battle" we run therisk of damaging an area of historic and natural interest for present andfuture generations.A Braunston Resident.

Ed: I so agree with the 'resident'. As a child one of my pleasures was rollingdown hillsides and grassy fields, whilst not intending to do likewise in JettyFields I fear local children are prevented from doing this because of all thehorrible 'piles of poo'!!

The planned work at Butchers Bridge took place at the end of Feb, theresults there speak for themselves. There is some more clearance to doon the bridge and more planting. Early in March we carried out a jointproject with Friends of Raymond and Blisworth Canal Partnership assist-ing us with some clearance work on the offside of the canal between theStop House and the road bridge. This was an extremely successful day,not only for the amount of work achieved, but also for the liaison betweenthe three different volunteer groups. We certainly intend repeating thislater in the year to improve the canal on our patch. On the same dayseveral members were also working on the Stop House Garden. TheIsland planting is yet to happen, but the shrubs are now available and thework will be completed soon. In the meantime the daffodils on the islandwhich are now far more visible are about to produce a beautiful display.

There is a Book Stall now in the Old PloughProceeds to All Saints' Church.

We would like to thank The Old PloughAnd many other

Braunston Businesses for their Support toAll Saints

BraunstonTime bankAfter lots of research and endless cups of tea we (Councillor Abigail and RevSarah) are pleased to update you on the progress of Braunston's very ownTimebank. The idea is that Braunston has its own mini volunteer-economy based onTime. Quite simply you volunteer your time, skills and energy and takeadvantage of the time skills and energy of other villagers in return. For everyhour that you give you earn an hour of someone else's time- which you canuse, keep in the bank until you need it or donate to someone who you thinkneeds it more than you. Everyone's time is worth the same whether you areoffering computing help, form-filling, gardening, mending or prayer (just afew examples) and there is nobody who need simply receive "charity"without putting something back in to the scheme.Time given to individual villagers or village projects (like the church fete orBraunston Village Weekend) can both count, although we realise that therewill be many who just want to continue to do what they do regardless of thisscheme- and that's fine too. We don't want to tread on any toes but we dowant anyone who needs a helping hand or several to be able to access helpwithin the village. We are delighted that the Daventry Volunteer Centre has agreed to adminis-ter the Braunston Timebank for us. This means that all the legalities, insur-ances and bureaucracy will be looked after. They will be producing for us aBraunston-specific leaflet explaining the scheme which will be delivered toevery household in the village. As a measure of their commitment to thescheme both the Parish Council and the PCC (Church council) have eachoffered a grant of £200 towards the costs of setting up our scheme. The nextstep is to ask for some Timebank Guinea Pigs so that we can test theregistration process. We have a target of 70 volunteers during the first yearand hope that the scheme will eventually take on a momentum of its own. Ifyou are interested in helping get the Braunston Timebank off the groundplease contact either Abigail on 891782 or Sarah on 890298. We lookforward to hearing from you.

    BRAUNSTON PARCELS

1219 parcels have now been sent to our troops since April 2007. An amaz-ing amount and my sincere thanks go to everyone who continues to donateto 'the box' when they are in our village shop.Being an "Irish" regiment our current recipients, members of the RoyalDragoon Guards, were able to celebrate St Patrick's Day while on deploy-ment in Afghanistan. Apparently, bunches of shamrock were sent out to theWarthog Squadron which they then wore on their headgear. ( A small butsignificant gesture to remind them of their history and their roots.)My thanks once again to everyone who contribute and help with this worth-while project.Val Worrall
