DESCRIPTION: Strategic Planning is dead; what we need is Strategic Management. This is because fast changes in technology and the economy make the “plan” obsolete by the time it is approved. Fast innovation and disruptive technology have forged a different dynamic in fields of organizational change in which discerning the future requires an engagement and discernment that is dynamic and continuous. The dialectic of innovation requires not only learning and transformation, but un-learning and letting go of assumptions, practices, and systems that worked well in the past, but no longer meet the needs of a changing market. In this workshop, we will review a spectrum of approaches or paradigms that leadership can adopt to engage in organizational transformation via strategic work from a comparative perspective. We will see how different approaches represent different ways of thinking often rooted in different disciplines, including psychology, anthropology, architecture, urban planning, economics, education, biology, political science, etc. Each approach has strengths and weaknesses and is linked to different practices and philosophies. Discerning the future direction entails a quality of engagement that requires both letting go of prior assumptions and being open to different possibilities. The workshop provides an introduction to the field of organizational strategy. Alternative approaches to strategy give us a sense of different paradigms of change available to leadership, allowing for more thoughtful process in guiding organizations toward their futures. One of the emerging paradoxes in the field of strategy is the tension between the need to engage change strategically to survive competitive pressures and the desire to build sustainable futures. The paradox is that sustainability requires profound change, which at one level is a contradiction. Disruptive technologies and innovation require different forms of strategic thinking not only for sustainability but for organizational survival. The different schools of strategic work engage change by exploring organizational identity, entrepreneurship, organizational learning, reactive and proactive strategies, emergent processes, industrial structural change, horizontal and vertical integration, cultural change, innovative and mimetic processes, restructurings, and much more. In the process of exploring organization strategy, we learn about different paradigms that bring valuable ways to think out of the box and think about organization futures in different ways. In preparation for the workshop, participants should survey Henry Mintzberg’s et al’s book “Strategy Safari: A Guided Tour Through the Wilds of Strategic Management”. DESCRIPTION:Strategic Planning is dead; what we need is Strategic Management.

This book provides a useful map of the main approaches to strategy in the practitioner and scholarly literatures.

Students who are interested can contract with Miguel for an advanced KA in either Organization Change and Development (HOD 747) or Advanced Organization Studies (HOD 744).

LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCEDISCOVERING AND LEVERAGING

YOUR LEADERSHIP STRENGTHSTHE WESTIN O’HARE, 6100 NORTH RIVER ROAD, ROSEMONT, IL 60018

ALU-I729-102

DESCRIPTION:Are you curious to learn more about what drives you as a leader? Participants will take a free Leadership Vital Signs (LVS) self-assessment offered by Six Seconds, a global leader in emotional intelligence. The session will include a group debrief of the report, as well as a variety of interactive leadership exercises focusing on communication and teamwork.

Description: Participants will learn about their personal leadership strengths and work with others in the group to explore new ways to communicate and collaborate by leveraging these new-found insights, and will take the internationally-normed and validated Leadership Vital Signs (LVS) assessment and receive an individual report. A group debrief will be held to explain the report and provide guidance for interpreting the results. The LVS assessment is based on the Six Seconds’ model of organizational performance drivers and outcomes. Certified coaches and consultants around the world administer the LVS in a wide variety of organizational settings. The database includes over 15,000 people from over 100 organizations in more than 10 countries.

The presentation will follow the Six Seconds’ action learning model of Engage, Activate, and Reflect. Following a brief introduction and orientation to the session, participants will be invited to share their own leadership experiences and goals and, in particular, their expectations for the day. Several “ice-breaking” activities will be conducted to bring the group together and create a participatory and collaborative learning environment. Next, a group debrief of the LVS will be done to describe and discuss the underlying organizational model, the assessment tool, and the report. Guidance on how to interpret individual results will be presented. A combination of large and small group activities, focusing on communication and collaboration, will enable participants to activate what they have learned from the LVS assessment about their leadership strengths. Finally, participants will have the opportunity to share reflections on what they have learned and begin to formulate action plans for integrating these insights into their development as emerging leaders.

Presentation Learning Objectives: This presentation has the following learning objectives: a) participants will gain a solid understanding of a powerful organizational model and related drivers of performance and specific leadership outcomes, 2) participants will discover insights into their own leadership strengths and opportunities based on taking a normed and validated assessment, and 3) participants will start to put these insights into practice by working with others during the session and begin to construct an action-oriented, personal leadership development plan.

REVOLUTIONIZING THE WAY WOMEN WORK TOGETHER

THE WESTIN O’HARE, 6100 NORTH RIVER ROAD, ROSEMONT, IL 60018

ALU-I729-103

DESCRIPTION:The latest research shows that many women struggle in their workplace relationships with other women. This session combines presentation of research findings, small group discussions of case studies and question/answer interaction with the audience.

Description: Dr. Litwin reveals startling paradoxes and offers powerful solutions and tools that result in better relationships and communication amongst women in the workplace. Participants will gain insight into how to strengthen women’s relationships and communication.

Dr. Anne Litwin has been a consultant, coach and trainer for more than thirty years in a wide variety of organizations throughout the world. Anne’s lifelong interest in the unique dynamics among women in a wide range of work environments is at the forefront of the research in her latest book, New Rules for Women: Revolutionizing the Way Women Work Together. In her 30 years of diversity and organizational change work, Anne has developed a passion for unleashing the leadership potential of women in organizations and helping organizations groom their talented women as future leaders. She feels that one key to increasing the retention of talented women is to strengthen the ability of both female and male managers to create supportive environments where both female and male staff can flourish.

LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCEMEDIA, TECHNOLOGY, INNOVATION(MTI) –

CONCENTRATION (ISAKO)THE WESTIN O’HARE, 6100 NORTH RIVER ROAD, ROSEMONT, IL 60018

GEN-K777-43

DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to the launch of the Media, Technology and Innovation (MTI) Concentration, the renamed and transformed ISAKO (Information Society, Media, and Knowledge Organizations) Concentration. While this concentration is located in the Organization Development and Change (ODC) PhD, it is open to all doctoral students.

Please join with us in exploring the important ideas, challenges, and opportunities connected with this new concentration. Together we will review the requirements and the opportunities for collaborative inquiry, research, and practice with media and disruptive change in complex systems such as global organizations, as well as in the arts, social and economic inequities, ecology and sustainability, and health care. Together we will bring our concentration to the forefront of exploring the newest human frontier of media and disruptive change.

The MTI concentration is focused on the ways in which media, technology, and knowledge networks are transforming our societies, organizations, and ourselves, by becoming the dominant driving force for innovation and organizational change.

Highlights: Many traditional organizations today are challenged by the disruptive role of media and technology. Web-based, on-demand business models are increasingly eliminating established enterprises and disrupting established communities of practice. Yet, this wave of disruption— including social media, mobile apps, streaming video, and on-demand technologies, on both a national and global level— also contains the seeds of innovation. The focus of this PhD concentration is therefore to equip graduates with the scholarly and practical skills to anticipate and harness disruptive technology as a force of innovation and positive change.

PROGRAM BENEFITS:

As part of this concentration, students develop the following competencies:

¡ Ability to assess the transformative power of digital media within distinct social systems and organizations

¡ Ability to investigate the ongoing migration of information to an online world

¡ Ability to identify and lead the interaction between disruptive technology and organizational innovation

¡ Ability to recognize the role of media and technology as a global catalyst of change

GEN-I730-95

DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to this meeting to discuss developments towards the Fielding concentration, Somatics, Phenomenology, and CMM (Coordinated Management of Meaning.

This Concentration combines and integrates scholarly theory and mastery of embodied mindful awareness (somatics) with substantial grounding in transformative phenomenology (consciousness and deep personal reflection) along with the interpretive and practical dynamics of social constructionism (Coordinated Management of Meaning (CMM), Symbolic Interactionism, and related communication and social construction disciplines). The impact of the artful blending of these three disciplines and bodies of theory is to: (1) reinforce the validity of “essence-based evidence” available through the phenomenological lens, (2) provide insights into improved research and practice through lifeworld analysis (see Rehorick and Bentz, Transformative Phenomenology (3) improve practice skills through somatic awareness and practices (4) intensify and enhance leadership skills through increase communication practices such as CMM, (Communicative Management of Meaning) which was developed and perfected by the late Barnett Pearce, HOD Professor Emeritus, and (5) increase contemplative skills as related to research and practice based. Connecting D&I change efforts to the bottom line continues to be a challenge for most organizations and change agents. In this presentation, we present examples and a tool to measure bottom-line results achieved through the implementation of total a systems change effort to create inclusive workplace practices that leverage differences.

Description: The purpose of this presentation is to present the Inclusion as the HOW Commitment Curve to assess progress. Discuss metrics for tracking progress toward making Inclusion as the HOW® a way of life and provide a case study example of how the Commitment Curve has been implemented and the impact on organizational results.

Organizations are under intense pressure to demonstrate return on investment for every aspect of their operations—and inclusion change efforts are no exception. Yet measuring the success of inclusion efforts, particularly aspects as intangible as internalization, has proved elusive. The two presenters in this session will share a set of strategies and metrics that have successfully measured internalization in a global manufacturing operation, and they will share their experience as a model for other professionals.

The session will take the form of an extended case study to describe the model’s practical details, so that participants can apply them directly to their own situations. Both presenters spent extensive time working in the client system as practitioners and share the outcomes of their experiences. As organizations feel pressure to quantify return on every investment, it is imperative to create reliable tools and strategies to measure this most elusive of changes—and to use the resulting data to shape strategies along the way. In this session, the presenters share an extensive inclusion change effort and their successful strategies and metrics for tracking individual, team, and organizational progress toward making the mindsets and behaviors of Inclusion as the HOW® a way of life. Participants will hear about the use of the Inclusion as the HOW Commitment Curve to benchmark progress, a Way of Life Vision that fully articulates what internalization looks like, and real case examples of, how this effort has impacted and accelerated organizational results.

The audience for this presentation is organization development scholar/ practitioners who experienced challenges trying to measure the success of their interventions.

LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCELEVERAGING KNOWLEDGE MNGMNT

THE WESTIN O’HARE, 6100 NORTH RIVER ROAD, ROSEMONT, IL 60018

GEN-S401-62

DESCRIPTION:Managing tacit knowledge is a core competency as well as a challenge for high intellectual capital-oriented organizations. Professionals in such organizations are mindful of the turbulence in the environment and are constantly dealing with knowledge saturation and complexity. Over the years, they must have developed a tacit understanding of what works and what does not. They may be willing to share this organization-specific knowledge with others as well as learn from one another. Based on the learning from his books- Appreciative Inquiry and Knowledge Management (2007) and Appreciative Sharing of Knowledge: Leveraging Knowledge Management for Strategic Change (2005)- Tojo Thatchenkery will introduce the participants to a new methodology for knowledge management. This strengths-based positive approach to knowledge management will be customized for each organization where participants will be asked to consider instances when true knowledge sharing may have occurred and propose an outline to sustain an effective KM architecture. Participants will hear examples from government agencies and private sector where ASK has been effectively used and learn the various steps that they may use in their own organizations.

LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCESCHOLAR PRAC. LEGACY

THE WESTIN O’HARE, 6100 NORTH RIVER ROAD, ROSEMONT, IL 60018

ALU-I729-105

DESCRIPTION:Once upon a time we were all excited to be scholar-practitioners. Some of us still are—and all of us still can be! Get in touch with the wonderful vantage point this boundary-spanning role allows, and how it contributes to and improves your happiness, prosperity, productivity, and the pro-social environment you create.

Description: This session celebrates the scholar-practitioner in all of us—recent or soon-to-be grads, seasoned alums and everyone in between. It will begin, after brief participant and panelist introductions, with an introduction to the topic of the scholar-practitioner, and particularly the interdisciplinary versions of such using Bourdieu’s practice theory and others that follow from it.

Next, a series of questions will be posed. The “panelists” in the fishbowl will have a conversation around the questions as the rest of the participants listen:

¡ When did you first hear the term scholar-practitioner and how did you relate or not relate to it?

¡ How might you apportion scholar with practitioner as aspects of your identity? Do the roles compete? Overlap? Is one bigger than the other? How do they relate? How has this changed?

¡ How do you use your specific scholarly knowledge to navigate everyday life?

¡ How does your practitioner experience influence your scholarship?

¡ What direction are you headed in? What legacy are you leaving or do you hope to leave?

Next, the participants will reflect on the questions and have a conversation amongst themselves. After a round of report outs, participants will propose breakout groups for in-depth discussion of emergent topics. Finally, participants will create and share action plans.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: ¡ Participants will articulate their definition of scholar-practitioner

¡ Participants will locate themselves on the scholar-practitioner journey: where they have been, where they are, and where they are going

¡ Participants will create an action plan to take the next steps of their scholar-practitioner journeys.

DESCRIPTION:Topic Area of Focus: Industry Trends and Current Topics: Career and leadership coaching for non-executive women of color

According to a 2013 Executive Coaching survey conducted with 81.3% male and 18.7% female respondents by Stanford Graduate School of Business, Center for Leadership & Research, “nearly two-thirds of senior executives do not receive outside coaching.” It stands to reason if male executives do not receive outside coaching, entry to mid-level leaders, in particular women and women of color don’t either. Equally important, women and women of color in communities do not have widespread access to career, leadership or life coaching. The presentation of current research will highlight this gap in access to coaching as a critical social justice issue and may hold significance for the future direction of the coaching industry.

Description: This session will present current research examining how access to coaching impacts the lives of non-executive i.e., entry-mid-level supervisors and women in communities, and how it fosters transformative learning and promotes social justice.

Dr. Green Fareed completed her dissertation research related to women, race and culture, founded a non-profit program in 2004 that conducts on-going research connected to her dissertation research; presented research related to women, ethnic culture and transformative learning at conferences, published articles and a book chapter, and currently conducting a research project on the topic of this presentation. She is a professional coach with over 20 years of experience in women’s career and leadership development and coaching. Her areas of research and practice are the inclusion of ethnic culture and transformative learning for social justice into my work with women.
