AUTUMN IS A SECOND SPRING WHEN EVERY LEAF IS A FLOWER As we sit and watch the leaves turn and the weather turn cooler we can reminisce about what a great summer we had. The places we went, the people we met and in my case, all the ice cream I ate. At The Westhill, we did many things over the summer - barbecues, gardening, outdoor games and picnics to name a few. There was never a dull moment. In the fall we do not slow down at all, there is always something going on. Outings to see the fall colours, food from the local harvest, speaker series and of course our exercise programs. Our recreation team always has something on the go and we add new and different activities all the time. We had two larger events this fall including The Walk-it for Parkinson’s, where we were a hub for the walk and our Honeyfest Open House. Did you know that we have 12 honey bee hives throughout our properties in Southwestern Ontario? We showcased our honey at Honeyfest, with proceeds going to local charities. Of course we cannot forget Oktoberfest, always a fun time! For the second year in a row Sifton and The Westhill will be sponsoring a band in the Kitchener Waterloo Oktoberfest Thanksgiving Day Parade. This year our bus with some of our seniors will be participating. Come out and see us on Monday October 14th. GRANDMA’S REMEDY: CUT YOUR COLD WITH GINGER, HONEY, AND LEMON TEA Ginger has been used as a raw material in many traditional preparations since the ancient time. As a component of traditional health products, Ginger is known to be effective as an appetite enhancer, in cold prevention and as an anti-

inflammatory. Did you know you can drink it, too? Lemon has reserves of Vitamin C, also known to boost your immune system, while honey helps the whole concoction go down smoothly!Heat up water with fresh ginger, add some honey (try Sifton honey!) and lemon, and you’ve got yourself the ideal home remedy for fighting the common cold!

FIRE SAFETYHere at The Westhill, the health and safety of our residents is of the utmost importance. One of the areas where we strive to maintain the highest level of compliance and training is fire protection. Not only do we have

fire protection devices installed throughout the building, such as sprinkler systems, smoke detectors, and fire extinguishers, but we must also to be up to date with all fire protection training. Annual training keeps us educated on what to do in case of a fire and allows us to prepare for a multitude of scenarios. This in turn increases efficiency and decreases response times, if a fire were to occur.

The most important thing we can do is to prevent fires from starting in the first place. This includes things such as keeping debris free from hallways, and not leaving items (such as irons or candles) unattended. It is also important not to prop open fire doors, as these are in place to contain a fire in a particular area. We work closely with the fire department to make sure we are compliant with all fire codes and regulations. If you have any questions concerning fire prevention, please do not hesitate to contact the Environmental Services Manager, Ian Manary.

PREVENT THE SPREAD! There are a number of smart actions you can take to avoid the flu – but getting vaccinated each year, prior to the flu season, is the first

and most important step!

• Get vaccinated early (between October and December)

• Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water, or use hand sanitizer

• Cough and sneeze into your arm or sleeve

• Keep common areas and shared items clean and disinfected

• Keep doing what you normally do, but stay home if you are sick

• Call the Wellness Nurse if you experience severe flu-like symptoms

GETTING PERSONAL BRUCE AND JO-ANNE BUCKINGHAM The greatest bedtime story ever written

Warning: You may fall asleep before you finish reading it!

Bruce and Jo-Anne Buckingham moved into 7 Westhill Drive September 12, 2017, during the final phase of the buildings’ construction. They both enjoy living here and have made new friends while enjoying many of the social activities offered here.

Jo-Anne and Bruce both retired at age 55 but 5 years apart. Jo-Anne was a Registered Nurse and retired from

employee health services at Sun Life Financial. Bruce was a high school history teacher and retired as a Secondary School Principal in Stratford.

An exciting event in Bruce’s life occurred during a revolution while he was teaching in Secondi-Takaradi, Ghana. He was driving along the road while a platoon of soldiers marched by. Without cause, a rifle was thrust through the open window into Bruce’s face. He was challenged, “You be Chinese?” In Bruce’s mind he imagined the headline in the local newspaper “Canadian Teacher Killed in Ghana!” Since he is sharing the story, there was a happy ending. To hear more, talk to Bruce!

Both are active in their church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. They served a mission for the Church in British Columbia and in Alberta in 2004-5. They have four children and three grandchildren. They enjoy travel and have visited more than 70 countries — they hope to see even more!

Back to the title of this article — Jo-Anne says nothing exciting ever happened in her life except meeting Bruce at age 36. We hope that is not true, but love her sense of humour!

The Westhill | Fall 2019

I’m Amanda, I have worked at The Westhill for 4 years as of August. I love working here and being able to put a smile on the faces of the people I see every day.

Some of my favourite things include my cats, sitting on a patio in the summer, concerts, and travelling. Some of the places that I have travelled to include Alberta, the United States, Iceland, Ireland, Scotland, England, the Netherlands, and Sweden.

My favorite place was Ireland. I had a great time there and enjoyed the atmosphere and culture. I hope to visit again soon!

I’m also an aunt and that is one of the highlights of my life. My nieces and nephews, along with my cats (Dexter and Molly) bring me laughter and a greater purpose. Thanks for getting to know me!

BEHIND THE SERVICE AMANDA MCINNES

DID YOU KNOW?Thousands of Canadians don’t get the flu shot because of misinformation. Here are some common myths, along with the truth.

Three myths exposed:

1) Myth: The flu vaccine doesn’t work. Truth: Immunization is the most effective way of reducing the impact of the flu. It does not prevent flu in 100

percent of people, but recipients who later get the flu, often experience only mild flu symptoms.

2) Myth: I got a flu shot last year, so I don’t need another. Truth: The vaccine components are updated annually, so your body also needs to be revaccinated as often.

3) Myth: I never get sick. Truth: You might not be in danger of becoming seriously ill, but those around you could be.

Being immunized yearly lowers everyone’s risk!
