Vision Statement To share Christ with all by leading and nurturing through a Ministry of love, fellowship,
Bible study, prayer, worship, praise and proclamation of the Gospel; to seek God’s guid-ance as we respond to needs and serve as missionaries to our community and beyond.
In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophecy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly. Romans 12:6-8 (NLT)
As God’s children he has gifted us in many different ways. To be the church He has called us to be, as reflected in the scripture above, we have to do it all. Everyone has a different gift and is able to give his time, talents and treasures. One person from Westfield Baptist Church can’t do it all. It takes all of us to fulfill the goal of Christian service. Prayerfully consider how you will support the ministry of Westfield the remainder of this year and the year to come. Join us on Wednesday, October 20 to celebrate how God has blessed us!

A friend recently gave me an article to
read from The News & Observer. The
title of the article was—Shamed
Afghan families dress girls as boys. This
article revealed how Afghan families pretend
one or more of their daughters are actually
boys. It gave several reasons why this is done:
economic needs, social pressure, and
believing if you raise your daughter as a boy then there is an increased chance a
male baby will actually be born into the family.
In that culture, sons are considered much more valuable than daughters. The main
reason is male children are the only ones who can inherit their father’s land and
wealth. For families who only have female children, they are looked upon with
pity and disgust. It is as if that family has failed to meet the expectations and
standards for success. So for Afghan parents with only daughters, they feel that
having a fake son, requiring a young girl to look and act like a boy, brings them
more acceptance.
As I contemplated this news article, it brought to mind Galatians 3: 26-29. In verse
twenty-six Paul said, ―For you are all children of God through faith in Christ
Jesus.‖ Acceptance in God’s kingdom is for everyone. It is not limited to just
male children. Families with both sons and daughters are welcomed. Paul
affirmed this sentiment in verse twenty-eight when he said, ―There is no longer
Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ.‖
Isn’t that exciting news? God sees us ALL as his children.
We serve and worship a God who does not play favorites. God promised Abraham
that his descendants would be more numerous than the stars and true heirs in his
kingdom. And according to Paul’s interpretation of that promise, we are the
recipients of all that God has promised. I am proud to be a child of God who loves
his sons and daughters equally, aren’t you?

Music Notes
The adult choir has begun work on our Christmas cantata, ―Behold Emmanuel:
Love is With Us!‖ by Craig Adams and Alyssa Goins. This 25-minute cantata includes songs for the whole group, ensembles, and soloists, singing nearly a dozen familiar Christmas carols and hymns and one new favorite, the title song ―Behold Emmanuel.‖ The choir will present the cantata for the residents of Senior Citizens Village on Thursday night, December 2nd, and will lead the church in worship on Sunday morning, December 5th.
There are extra songbooks and rehearsal CDs available, so this a great time for new folks who have been on the brink of trying choir out to come join the fun! The Christmas season is a time of fantastic and beloved music – if you don’t join the singing, you’ll wish you had! (And the rocks might cry out, which would be neat but disturbing.) There’s still time for you to catch up and learn the music – IF you come to rehearsal right away!
Continue to be in prayer for our search for a new church pianist, and please pray for and thank the choir for their flexibility as we continue to rehearse and worship without a regular pianist. Joyce, especially, is doing extra work on both organ and piano – thank you Joyce! We love you and are praying for and supporting you, as well!

We’re off to a good start for the new school year, with Kids Time (ages 3 – 7) and Children in Action (ages 8 – 11) going well. Kids Time is learning about the Fruits of the Spirit, through Bible stories, music, creative activities and crafts. Children in Action is providing education on missions opportunities and introductions to missionaries and ways for our kids to get involved in God’s work in the world.
Adults, would you like to be a part of these ministries, teaching and loving children, and following their example by being involved in God’s work? If yes, then contact Jane Marks or Joyce Ballard (for Kids Time) or Michelle Dawson (for Children in Action), or Chris Cottingham (for either, and to participate in the van ministry).
Adults, do be in prayer and step forward to help with the van ministry. Mark’s gospel tells us the story of a time when the disciples had a problem with children being brought to Jesus for His blessing. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. (Mark 10:14) There are few things we can do that are more important than bringing someone to Jesus—on Wednesdays to experience His love, learn about His life and teachings, and be offered the chance to give one’s life to Him. This is what we are talking about with the van ministry – reaching out to kids who, by themselves, can’t get here, but with your help can come experience the love of Jesus and the support and discipleship of a church family.
The van ministry takes fifteen minutes once a week, won’t make you miss Wednesday night supper or prayer time, and requires only that you have a NC driver’s license in good standing which we can send a copy of to our insurance company. That, and a willingness to love and welcome children in the name of Jesus, is all that you need. Even volunteering once a month will make a big difference!
As I mentioned last month, the Children in Action Motto is simple: Send me! What is God sending you to do this month?
Children’s

Youth Connection
All youth events are open to youth in grades 6-12.
On Wednesdays in October our unit will focus on the Bible, dealing with topics like The Bible: Truth or Tabloid? and Bible: Sleep-Inducing or Life-Changing? Does the Bible contradict itself? Is the New Testament more important than the Old Testament? And what’s up with all those different translations anyway? Think there are Bible questions you’re not supposed to ask in church? Nuh uh! Come Wednesdays in October with your tough questions, ready to search out some real answers. Bring your friends (especially if they’ve got tough Bible questions)!
One Wednesday night in October will be a surprise as we go off-site on the church van, aka the Mystery Machine on Mission. We won’t just talk about what God says in the Bible, we’ll live it firsthand! Of course, the last Wednesday night in the month is our regularly scheduled YouthLive supper, from 5:45–7: 15 p.m. Location by youth group vote!
Students and parents, don’t sit on the sidelines – be involved with Youth Connection each Wednesday night. This gives us a time to stop in the middle of our crazy-busy week, refocus, and reconnect – with each other, and especially with God. He’s here ready to meet us – come ready and willing to connect with Him!
Also this month: Fellowships Sunday night October 10 and October 24. (Parents, call Chris C to host!)
Coming soon, times TBA as Chris and the youth parents settle details: a-mazing corn! (No, not Chris Dawson’s corny puns; corn mazes! With flashlights! In the dark! With scream contests!) And coming in November: Lock-In! (Youth cheer, adults over 35 tremble.)
