Ensuring steam engines are tested and certified before being included in the outdoor programming season. Working with WDM staff and volunteers to ensure appropriate care and maintenance standards are maintained during the programming season. Ensuring operating artifacts are properly prepared for storage at the end of the season. This position requires a 5 th class power engineer certificate, a Saskatchewan Limited Power Engineer’s (Traction) license and a Saskatchewan Class 5 driver’s license. The Chief Engineer is expected to apply specialized knowledge and skills to ensure the safe operation of antique steam engines, gas tractors and other operating artifacts. The ability to work well with diverse groups, including volunteers, while maintaining the highest safety standards is essential. A detailed job description outlining duties, accountabilities and working conditions is attached. This is a seasonal position from mid-May to mid-September. Travel to all WDM locations and working weekends is required. The salary range for this position is between $25.00 and $30.00 per hour. The WDM adheres to all COVID protocols required by the Province of Saskatchewan. These requirements will be followed throughout the 2021 programming season. Position Mandate: The Chief Engineer holds primary responsibility the safe operation of antique steam engines and gas tractors during the WDM’s outdoor programming season (mid-May to mid-September). The Chief Engineer also oversees the use of other artifacts in the operating collection.

Representative Duties

Operating Artifacts

• Ensures the safe operation of antique steam traction engines, the Vulcan steam locomotive and K+SShort Line 101, gas tractors, and other operating artifacts at all WDM locations.

• Assesses hazards and identifies maintenance requirements for engines, tractors, and other operatingartifacts being used during the outdoor programming season.

• Ensures steam engines are tested and certified before being included in the outdoor programmingseason.

• Monitors the condition of antique steam engines and gas tractors throughout the operating season.

• Works with Museum managers, collections staff and volunteers to ensure appropriate care andmaintenance standards are maintained for throughout the WDM system.

• Leads programs to teach the safe operation of powered artifacts, including antique steam, incollaboration with WDM education staff.

• Ensures operating artifacts are properly prepared for storage at the end of the season.

Supervision and Administration • Supervises staff and volunteers operating antique steam engines and gas tractors. Ensures staff and

volunteers are qualified to operate engines, tractors and other operating artifacts.• Conducts regular safety briefings with staff and volunteers and ensures all policies and procedures

related to the safe operation of operating artifacts is adhered to.• Liaises with appropriate regulatory agencies, WDM managers, staff and volunteers to ensure that

practices governing the operation and maintenance of operational artifacts throughout the WDMsystem are consistent with WDM policies and procedures and government regulations.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE The position requires a 5th class power engineer certificate and a Saskatchewan Limited Power Engineer’s (Traction) license. A Saskatchewan Class 5 driver’s license is also required. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

• The integrity of the WDM’s operating artifacts is maintained through adherence to safety requirements, appropriate maintenance and museum standards.

• Visitors’ experience is enhanced through watching the safe operation of operating artifacts in demonstrations and shows.

• Robust protocols for the safe operation and maintenance of operational artifacts are in place and followed by all staff and volunteers.

• Operation of all operating equipment is in compliance with local and international legislation (e.g. Occupational Health and Safety, Technical Safety Authority of Saskatchewan), WDM policies, and museum standards.

• Positive and professional relationships and communications with internal and external contacts essential to performing the position’s duties are established and maintained.

• Staff, volunteer, visitor, and public observations regarding the incumbent are positive and appreciative.

• The incumbent’s work areas are maintained in a professional and organized manner. Project work areas are always cleaned after usage.

• Policies, procedures, laws and regulations relevant to all aspects of the work performed by this position are followed.

• Building security and visitor safety are maintained in area of work performed.

• Temporary and/or casual staff and volunteers understand their assignments and have both the training and resources needed to complete them satisfactorily and safely.

JOB SCOPE Applies technical knowledge and skills to ensuring the safe operation of artifacts from the operating collection. Planning often involves coordination of service delivery through others (including staff and volunteers), and integration of service delivery across the various museum locations. Ensures policies and procedures affecting operating artifacts are adhered to. Work is self-determined and assigned in terms of objectives, budget and schedule limitations, and critical areas that impact other departments. Reviews own and others’ work, prepares reports when required. Interactions require the skill to deal with a range of people and situations. Leads project teams or groups in the delivery of programs and services. Shares confidential information appropriately. EFFORT Applies specialized knowledge and skills to ensure the safe operation of antique steam engines, gas tractors and other operating artifacts. Works with a very large and diverse group of people including volunteers and visitors. The workflow is steady and occasional high volumes of work require the coordination of work with others. Some technical work requires sustained physical effort. Must meet deadlines. Work can measurably be affected by circumstances within various museums and many problems are addressed through solutions involving a variety of possible approaches where outcomes are unknown. This may cause moderate stress. WORKING CONDITIONS The incumbent works in museum workshops and outside on a routine basis. Handles a broad range of tools and equipment, occasionally lifting heavy objects. Travel throughout Saskatchewan and working weekends is required.
