A Word from the PastorThis year marks the 100th anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone for

our church building. It’s the perfect time to celebrate our church’s heritage and look forward to the future which God has in store for us.

In your daily prayer time this summer, I would like to invite you to search the Scriptures and pray for God’s insight regarding the future direction of our church and your own part in these future ministries.

One Bible passage which is particularly helpful in this regard is Romans 12. In fact, the United Methodist Church is encouraging each church to become a “Romans 12 Congregation.” Here are some characteristics they’ve identified (see www.gbod.org/Romans12):

Look for needs outside of the church, and then work at ways to meet those needs.

Experience prayer as foundational to all aspects of congregational life. Learn from set-backs & experience God’s presence in the midst of “failures.” Have a profound trust and respect of pastoral leadership. They have pastors

who understand themselves as spiritual leaders, and have a clear under-standing of the type and level of leadership needed in specific situations.

Live out of a sense of abundance, with an expectancy of God’s presence and guidance.

Have a strong congregational identity and repeatedly articulate the mission and vision of the congregation through a variety of methods.

Are very intentional in forming and sustaining relationships. Are often a center of energy in the community. Identify leaders through formal and informal gifts assessment processes

and are constantly on the look-out for new leaders to nurture. Have leaders, both clergy and laity, who engage in learning and nurturing

experiences together as a team. Many have leadership covenants to which they hold one another accountable.

Food for thought, as we prepare for the next 100 years of our church’s life at 5050 North Main Street in North Rose!

God’s blessings, Dan

Peace with Justice Sunday Special Offering

Across the United Methodist Church, compassionate people respond to God’s call to be peacemakers. They advocate for human rights, buy fair-trade products, care for the environment, demonstrate for a cause, eradicate poverty, feed hungry people, mediate conflict, provide health care, and seek affordable housing and model nonviolence.

Because of the special offering received on Peace with Justice Sunday, God’s people learn to coexist lovingly and peacefully. One half of this offering goes to global outreach through the General Board of Church and Society; one half stays here in North Central NY for annual conference-related peace with justice ministries.

We will celebrate Peace With Justice Sunday on August 9. There will be offering envelopes on the table in the back of the church which you can use on that Sunday or during the following weeks. Your gift makes a world of difference! Thank you.

Youth Theater Presents “A Masterpiece of Love”

Walk in the Light Productions will present a youth theater performance of “A Masterpiece of Love” on July 10th and 11th at 7pm. This production is a cabaret style show created and directed by Jennifer Martin, music directed by Kim Dobbin with original music by Eric D. Martin. This ministry outreach event is a cooperative effort of many youth and young adults from more than nine of our area churches.

In 2007 we presented our first theater production entitled “Walk in the Light” as a way to give the youth a chance to develop their God-given talents and discover a way to use their gifts to minister to others and honor Him. As a result, many of the youth have drawn closer to God and strengthened their faith.

This year’s cast includes: Emily Burm, Conner Burry, Emma Carpenter, Rebecca Coon, Ben Gerstner, Rachel Guthrie, Emily and Ryan Howes, Casen Lange, Caleb Miraglia, Helen Palmer, Jill Sherwin, Erin Straight, Eric Thompson, and Amber Walker. Our kids include: Erin Atkins, Isabell Martin, Alexis Perkins and Haley Taber.

Through music, dance and drama, “A Masterpiece of Love” is a pro-duction full of fun, humor as well as moving and heartfelt moments, that take us on a journey where we experience how God molds and makes us into the people He wants us to become – “A Masterpiece of Love.” Come join us for a family friendly evening of fun and ministry. Hope to see you there! Admission is free. A love offering will be taken. Performances will be held at the Rose Community Building located at 10734 School St, Rose NY 14542. For more information please con-tact Jennifer Martin at 587-4844 or [email protected]

* * * * *Share The Blessing

Have you ever considered how fortunate we are to have an active church in this time when so many other things are not available? We have a Finance Committee that is not waiting to make necessary changes  to keep our programs active.  In so doing, we are able to see exactly where our contributions are used for programs.  Now it is up to us to SHARE THE BLESSING  of this church and give the necessary support for the programs we individually feel are important.  This will be above your support for day to day operations.  Look for the PRO-GRAM ACTIVITIES MINISTRY poster (to the left of the church of-fice door).   This is the "extra mile" we are asked to go (Mt. 5: 41).

Nora DeMas- Featured Friend – June 14th

Nora was born on August 13th, 1920 in Oswego, NY. Her parents, Reginald and Lydia, met in England two weeks before Reginald migrated to the US in 1912. They were married two years later here in the US. Nora met her husband, Ralph “Stub” DeMas at Oswego College where he graduated in 1941 and she graduated in 1942. Nora taught first grade and later received her masters in Math. Her husband was the Superintendent at Red Creek High School, and Nora continued with her master’s degree in counseling and was the Guidance Counselor. It was understood that he was her boss during the daytime, but when they walked through the doorway of their home, they were on an even playing field. Nora wanted to continue her education and receive a doctorate degree but Stub asked her if she was ever going to quit going to college. In 1953 their daughter, Suzie was born and now lives in Baldwinsville. She works as a home health aide and has two sons, Andy (33), a mason, and David (28), a heavy equipment operator, who reside in Florida.

Nora retired her first time in 1975 and wanted to pursue traveling the world. Stub’s retirement led him to be the business manager of the town paper while she did subbing at the school. Unfortunately Stub died in 1989 after being married to Nora for nearly 47 years. Finally Nora retired the second time in 1991 and started to pursue her dream of traveling. She went to Greece, Spain, Bermuda, Canada, New Orleans and every place in Europe except Italy. One of Nora’s greatest attributes is her support of the kids. Many students would ask her opinion, need a place to stay, or a shoulder to lean on; and Nora was always there. She loves working with the youth and continues to support our youth at our church.

I wanted to get to know Nora better so I asked her neighbors, Bob and Carol Gregg, some questions, and here are the Top Ten Facts About Nora DeMas everyone should know:

1. She always set her lawn mover on high so her grass doesn’t clump.2. If a fly lands on her car, she will go wash it.3. She is a fast reader and will read a book in 1 or possibly 2 days.4. She has a coffee pot in every color.5. If it is a rainy day, she won’t drive so she doesn’t get her car dirty.6. She has just about every wooden nick knack collectible in her house. 7. She rather go to a yard sale than shop at Macy’s.

Page 7: THE WESLEY DISPATCH€¦  · Web viewA Word from the Pastor. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone for our church building. It’s the perfect time

8. She loves classical music, basketball, and baseball games.

-9 -9. If you said the word “Trip” Norah is already driving down the road.10. And the top 10 fact you should know about Nora DeMas is that she

the most kindhearted and generous person we know.

Nora became good friends with Fred Durbin during a senior citizens day trip, and they shared many of the same interests. He then introduced her to all of us, and she became part of our church family. Let us take this opportunity to thank Nora for her support of our youth and our congregation at this time.

-14 -Dear Church Family,

As you are undoubtedly aware, 2009 brings much concern for the financial well being of our church. We began the year with an anticipated budget of $166,666, pledged support of $106,632 and projected plate offerings and gifts of $12,800, leaving a significant short fall. Appeals made to the church body for additional financial commitment did not produce substantial results. Furthermore, by the end of the first quarter, some pledged support decreased. Therefore, the Church Council, upon recommendation of the Finance Team and support of the Stewardship Team, has adopted the following fiscal changes.

BASIC BUDGET This budget includes only the essential costs of maintain-ing a full time Pastor and Associated ministry, office support, worship services, church property maintenance and Conference Shared Ministry (apportionments). This budget will be supported with pledges, plate offerings and undesignated gifts.

Reductions in line items include:

Pastoral Ministry (Pastor Dan has declined his 09 salary increase)

Trustees and Parsonage Funds (reserve funds will be used)

Church Bookkeeper and Chancel Choir Directors (Deb, Lucy and Cinda will volunteer)

Substitute Secretary/Substitute Custodian/Substitute Organist (eliminated)

Worship & Education (email and church mailboxes will become primary sources of Communication. The church newsletter will be published bi-monthly and sent by email - only abbreviated editions will be printed. A $10 donation for postage will be appreciated for mailed copies. Sunday bulletins will be printed on white paper with limited inserts).

Utility costs will be controlled by limiting the number of times the sanctuary and Fellowship Hall must be heated (Sunday School rooms will be used when ever possible and the Choir will not practice in the Sanctuary in January).

These expenditures changes result in a Basic Budget of $142,730. Including current pledge change amounts, the possible shortfall is reduced to $22,000. The Stewardship Team will address increasing revenues to close this gap.

Fall Mission Projects

It may seem early, but it’s already time to be thinking about a fantastic opportunity this Fall! There is a list of mission projects which need workers! Generally, you take your RV to a United Methodist mission site and work together with other volunteers from across the US for 2 weeks. (Many of the sites also have housing available, so you don’t need an RV.) There are sites from New York to California, from Montana to Florida! Most of the work is general construction work & painting, but other skills are also needed. This program is called NOMADS (Nomads On a Mission Active in Divine Service). If you are interested, check out the material on the church bulletin board or contact Pastor Dan. Popular sites fill up quickly! (If you’d rather schedule a couple weeks in the winter, there are lots of winter opportunities in the sunny south.)

Student/Military Person Guardian AngelJeff & Rachel Wren Sue ManskeRyan Wunder Bertha Alderman

A Special Thanks to all of those who were Guardian Angels this past year – it is an important ministry of our church for our young people.

Needed: Guardian AngelsWe are in need of around 55 guardian angels for our college

students this fall. Below are listed the guidelines for the program. If you or your family could help out by being a guardian angel, please contact Linda Tompkins (587-9061 or [email protected]) as soon as possible.

Some guidelines to help with being a Guardian Angel. Send a card or note with a message at least once a month. If

you prefer email, you can email a message to Linda Tompkins ([email protected]) and she will forward your message so that your identity will be kept a secret.

Consider a small gift at Christmas and on their birthday. Please do not send gifts greater than $10.00.

Try to acknowledge any special accomplishments that you learn about them from the church newsletter, local newspaper, or their parents.

Pray regularly for your person. This is one of the greatest and most valuable gifts you can give.

Your identity for your college student is a secret until Graduation Sunday on June 13, 2010.

Your enthusiasm and commitment to these youth are greatly appreciated. Thank you for your help with this very important ministry.

Dear Pastor Dan and Members of the Church,

My family and I want you all to know how deeply we were touched by your care, kindness, thoughts, and prayers, through this, our saddest, saddest time. The celebration of our Sam was the most beautiful we have ever experienced! We are all looking towards heaven for peace. We all know in our hearts Sam is with us at all times, through our dark and lighter moments. Sam’s time on this earth was so short. However, we have learned how many people’s lives he touched in such a positive manner. We all knew how kindhearted, caring , and loving Sam was. We are so proud of him for sharing his heart with the world! We know for sure, everyone he touched will never forget him. He will guide them through their lives. As he will guide us also. The one thing Sam always did was take care of others around him! He will now take care of us from heaven, with God’s help. Our Sam was our angel on this earth. And now he is our angel from heaven.

Again, thank you for all you did and all you helped us through. Thank you for continuing to help us even now.

Love, Tammy, Jess, Shawn & Gauge

Davey and Goliath’s Circus Spectacular Vacation Bible SchoolSunday, August 2, to Thursday, August 6

6:00pm – 8:30pm

Vacation Bible School is quickly approaching and we are in need of a few things.  These items will be used for our crafts and can be dropped off at the church (in the box in the fellowship hall).  Please label so we know it is for VBS crafts.

Donations needed:puffy fabric paint birdseed peanut butter (cheap)

fabric plastic yogurt containers with tight fitting lidsbars of soap (cheap) toilet paper rolls paint glitter pens

We are also doing things a little differently this year. The first day children need to bring a pair of socks (that fit) with them for craft time.   We will be having a bounce house on Tuesday, a carnival on Thursday and lots of fun things to do throughout the week.  Collections will be a little different this year they will go as follows:  Sunday-money, Monday-clean stuffed animals, Tuesday-gently used children’s books, Wednesday-non-perishable food, Thursday-pennies are needed to play carnival games.  All items collected will be taken to Henderson that Saturday with Bud and the kids.  The money collected will be donated to the Angel Tree project.  We would like to get a rough count on kids who will be attending.  If you could fill out the pre-registration form and return to me by Wednesday, July 15th it would help us out a great deal.  Please spread the word about VBS and we can always use more helpers.  Any questions feel free to e-mail or call.  Thank you for your continued support.

Jennifer McKown ([email protected]) or 10425 Devay Rd., North Rose, NY 14516.
