Wait! Wait! Don’t tell me… I know the answer to this question “What does it mean to be a Methodist?” We have a rich
heritage in Methodist theology and history that we don’t often take the time to celebrate in worship. Throughout
September, we’re going to laugh, poke a bit of fun at ourselves and remember what it means to bring Christ’s message to the
world through the United Methodist Church. There is a show on public radio called “Wait, Wait! Don’t tell me!” It’s a fun
mix of trivia and humor as panelist guess right answers for questions posed to them. We’re going to create our own panel
and throw some trivia questions about Methodism to see how well they do! You might even have the opportunity to help
the panel out, who knows?
When American Methodism began in the 1760’s, Wesley sent a system of organization across the Atlantic to support the
growing movement. Classes and band offered Methodists in town and backwoods the opportunity to congregate in small
groups (that’s right, small groups!) for encouragement, accountability and spiritual growth. Classes and bands helped
encourage the inclusion of those who were being witnessed to by the Methodists, and put new converts in direct contact
with committed Methodist focused on “spreading scriptural holiness over the land.” We know the efforts of the early
Methodists were successful as Wesley United Methodist Church is a product of the circuit riding system supported by the
work of classes and bands meeting in times between pastoral visits.
So join with me in September, and let’s celebrate this mission endeavor given to us by God and the Wesleys! So here are a
few trivia questions to test your Methodist IQ on:

DNA - "Where to Next" - SEASON 2012-2013
Psalm 96:1 states "Sing a new song to the Lord... all the EARTH!" Praise is so important to God and He wants PRAISE from everyone! Adults, Teens and yes our wonderful Children!!! That's why we are so EXCITED to announce that the new Season of DNA is starting September 27th!!!! What a great and
wonderful opportunity to get to know our young ladies and celebrate their worth - their worth that they are God's creation - their worth that He loves them - and their worth that He LISTENS to them when
they Praise Him!
So if you think you may be interested in participating in DNA for the 2012-2013 Season here is some info:
Who: - All Girls entering 2nd - 5th Grade
When: - Group is open to anyone Thursday Sept 27th & October 4th - after that the group is closed as we bond and learn together! DNA runs every Thursday 5:45 - 7pm and a schedule is given out for the year at
the first group meeting.
Where: - Adams Hall - Wesley Church
What: DNA is a small group for girls to celebrate how unique & valuable we each are in Christ. We seek to get to know God more through weekly study, to get to know each other more through Small Group
discussion and activities and to Praise and Worship our Lord and Creator through song and dance. DNA is called upon to lead worship at several different Wesley events throughout the year and as always we
never know what the Lord may have in store for us this year :)
Why: We all want to grow together in Christ... to have fun with Christian friends and to celebrate being WHO God made us to be! Come join us! This year's focus is on REACHING OUT TO OTHERS! Last
year involved the start of the LOL campaign and our desire to see Micah 6:8 carried out in our lives - to seek justice, love mercy and walk humbly with our God!

Family Ministry/Children’s Ministry is wrapping up a very successful summer. The church was alive and buzzing with all of the fun
activities! We started many months ago... planning and preparing…
• In June we were excited and sad to hand our 5th graders over…. to YOUTH! We were able to help welcome them
into the youth group on June 24th. But we were able to catch up with them during Youthfest and again during
Wesleyfest as some of them volunteered!!!
• We were finally able to see Wesleyfest “FLY” with the theme of “SKY” at the end of July! So many children and
adults heard the message to “Trust God” each and every night of Wesleyfest! Family Ministry was so excited to
have the sanctuary decorated from top to bottom! It looked amazing!!
• DNA had an awesome pool / pizza party at the Faulhaber’s on June 29th. THANK YOU to Judy and Gary!
DNA will resume meetings on Thursday, September 27th, from 5:45 - 7 p.m. in Adams Hall.
• The DNA girls group took a much deserved summer hiatus. However, they rallied together in July to lead worship
for Wesleyfest! It was great to have them involved in Sunday Worship on July 22nd to kick off Wesleyfest. They
greeted the congregation as they came in and passed out “God Sightings” for everyone to complete for Wesleyfest.
• On July 29th the Family Ministry team hosted a huge Thank You picnic for all the volunteers that helped at Wesley-
fest. We hope everyone enjoyed the time of fellowship! We enjoyed serving everyone who served so attentively
during Wesleyfest.
• Not much time to rest after Wesleyfest as a few members of the CORE team prepared to take off to Kingdom
Bound! We joined several families and some of the Youth August 5th - August 9th for a wonderful time. Each
year we go, it seems to get better and better! Next year - yes! - we are already brainstorming for next year!!!! We
hope to have some new ideas that are more Family oriented. Stay tuned for more information!
• Sunday School Promotion Sunday was August 26th. How beautiful are the children of Wesley!!! Please continue to
pray for them as they embark on a new school year.
• August 26th was also the Back to School Dinner and Prayer Service. It was a wonderful prayer service for everyone
beginning a new school year. After dinner we sat around a campfire and sang a few songs. Several people offered
prayers for everyone. With the help of Pastor Pam, this service was made to be fun and interactive as the kids vis-
ited a Worry Station, Prayer Calendar Station, and Card Station before we came back together for a closing song.
Thank you everyone!!!!
• Ladies Chat night will RESUME on Friday, September 14th! Ladies, leave those men at home and come enjoy
some much deserved fellowship. Feel free to bring a snack to share, although not necessary!
• As we turn our sights to fall, we look forward to a very exciting year with new things popping up all around. We
are preparing for a planning / brainstorming session for the remainder of 2012 and for 2013 in September. Please
keep us - and each other - in your prayers.

Summer Camp NewsSummer Camp NewsSummer Camp NewsSummer Camp News Some times it is nice to get away from the regular routines and schedules of everyday life in order to see God in a whole new way. What better way for children to experience this, but by going to summer camp! This year the summer camping program at Wesley Church was revived to offer another avenue for children to grow closer to our awesome God. Kids going into fifth to eighth grades were encouraged to try out one of the Western Pennsyl-vania United Methodist Camps: Wesley Woods, Camp Allegheny, or Jumonville. A campership fund was set up at Wesley Church to help pay for a portion of the camp cost.
There were four children who went to Adventure Camp together at Wesley Woods at the end of July. They enjoyed going to camp and experiencing the challenges of adventure camp while growing closer to God. After returning they were asked two questions:

Once again, I praise the Lord for my brothers and sisters in Christ and for the family we have through Christ! We have served the Lord together as we offered this rummage sale to Him! Per-haps this year, more than the first two years, we truly learned what it meant to work together, side-by-side, lifting one another up, to accomplish His work. This year, we’ve worked through private tragedies, personal exhaustion, and aching muscles to do His work. It was down-right painful at times!!!
Jesus was there throughout the entire adventure, waiting for us to give Him these burdens and offering refreshment for the mind, body and soul. Are there things to learn about how to do it bet-
ter…you bet! Are there things we need to change before we tackle this again next year… probably. But, the one thing I feel all of you should know is how appreciated appreciated appreciated appreciated you are for your willingness to serve the Lord in this manner!!! The benefits are being able to see all of the merchandise as it comes in…sharing fellowship with one another as we prepare the merchandise for sale. For the first month, it only takes 2-3 hours a week commitment. But then three weeks prior to the sale, the commitment raises dramati-cally as the merchandise goes from a “trickle” to “bags and boxes in multiples”. The fi-nal hurdle as you all know is working around the other groups who use the center. Each time, it becomes more intense, where the “enemy” attempts to distract us from Christ into our discomfort. I’m so blessed to say that each one of you resisted the temp-tation to become irritable, complaining or angry with the situation or one another (or me)! It would have been so easy to become focused on our discomfort rather than the mission. The blessings I take away from this year are the sincere efforts to be there to support one another; the smiles on the faces of all of the shoppers; the comments of how clean, well-organized, low prices and the hospitality of UMW! As I write this, I still have to haul another load to the Salvation Army. We have the great feeling that we were able to bless the area agencies with our left over merchandise! The final blessing is that we were able to raise approximately $1,700.00 to be divided between the Missions Programs and the Future Facility Fund! To all who have donated merchandise, marked merchandise, helped carry it over from the church to the center (thank-you Nick and Youth!), helped set it up in the center, worked the day of the sale, baked good-ies and shared hospitality with free goodies, coffee, tea and juice, shopped and pur-chased treasures from us and/or packed it up and hauled it to area agencies- A GREAT A GREAT A GREAT A GREAT BIG THANKBIG THANKBIG THANKBIG THANK----YOU!!! Choir Notes
It’s September and the choir is up and running again. It seems to me like a good time to stop and consider this aspect of the music ministry at Wesley Church. Music has the ability to carry feeling and sometimes insight beyond what words alone can do. It has been said that “where words fail, music speaks”. J.S. Bach said, “Music is a fair and glorious gift of God”. Psalms encourages us to “Come before His presence with singing”. People who listen to the choir sing are given an opportunity to consider truths of God and of His Word in perhaps a slightly different aspect than previously. Choir music provides the congregation with an opportunity to be still, to listen and to ponder.
But beyond that is the enormous blessing that comes from being able to sing in the choir. We choir mem-
bers often remark to each other about the benefits of several weeks of practice on the same piece of mu-sic. Of course, we are working on the musical aspects of the piece, but a large part of that involves con-sidering the message of the text and how we can sing it in a way that best expresses those truths. There is also the added benefit of being able to “live” with the music for several weeks and let it’s truths settle into our hearts and minds.
Beyond the music, choir becomes a community that exists because we work together to develop our gifts and use them in ministry. This sense of family is readily apparent in the way members of the choir show genuine concern about each other’s needs. We spend a few minutes of each rehearsal sharing personal concerns and praying for them. There are few things that are more comforting and encouraging as hearing people bring each other’s needs to the Lord in prayer.
Because of the nature of choir, it is important as well as very beneficial to be in regular atten-dance at Thursday night rehearsals. I am so impressed by the commitment of these people. No matter what the weather, or what else has filled their day, they continually show up for rehearsal.
The choir is an open group. We ask that you come and attend a few rehearsals and then we can work together to determine whether this is a good avenue of service for you. People who would like to sing the glorious music of the Christmas season need to be in attendance at choir rehearsals on Thursday nights at 7 PM, beginning not later than the end of September.

Youth! Youthfest!
This year our theme for Youthfest was “It’s Not About meme”. A meme is: a cultural unit
(an idea or value or pattern of behavior) that is passed from one person to another by non-
genetic means (as by imitation). The teens learned that Christ is eternal and unchanging
and that the world is temporary. We played games, ate snacks, and learned about God!
Washington D.C.
In June two leaders and two teens went on a mission trip with YouthWorks! to Washington
D.C. where we worked with Cerebral Palsy patients, played bingo with senior citizens and
toured our nations capitol while praying for our Nation’s leaders.
Kingdom Bound
The first week of August we went to Darien Lake, NY for the annual Kingdom Bound festi-
val where students listened to great speakers like Justin Lookadoo and Nick Vujicic as well
as great Christian bands like Third Day, David Crowder, The Afters and TobyMac.
Wesley bikers! Mark your calendar for the first
"Ride Your Bike To Church Day" on Sunday,
September 9th. Let's share our passion for the
Lord, and our passion for our bikes, and enjoy
some two wheeled worship with other bikers from

Many seniors attended the Annual Picnic in the
Wesley Center. We seniors stayed dry as the
weather was rainy. Excellent planning!!! Don
Steinhauer was serenading all the tables with
his new but smaller Guitar. Don always lifts our
spirits in song each gathering. His wife Shirley is
always available to assist. We are blessed that
they share their spiritual talents.
Our speaker was from the Erie Zoo, Heather
Gula; Volunteer Coordinator. Heather intro-
duced her assistant Volunteer Audrey Hoag. We
were impressed with the slide show she shared
and learning that there are 400 different animals and 100 different species available for view-
ing. Heather brought three animals to share with our group. As Heather carried them from
table to table, you could view them closer and pet them if you desired.
1. Bearded Dragon (Reptile) Had spikes around its neck, brown in color, originally from Australia.
2. Chinchilla (Rodent) Grey in color, is a 12 year old female, originally from South America.
Its fur is used for jackets and coats. It loses its hair when frightened; and re-grows what is
lost. Has 2-3 litters yearly, lives for 2 years.
3. American Alligator The alligator was quiet and calm with a long tail. Heather shared that the
alligator enjoyed his tummy being rubbed as he was held. This kept him calm and easier to
handle. That was evident, as he became rather combatant when put in his cage. Alligators
lose their teeth but new ones grow in soon. They accrue 3,000 teeth in a lifetime. This type of
alligator has eyes and ears that move on to the top of his head. They have small dots on their
bodies that are sensation areas. They also swallow their food whole.
The two ladies gave an interesting and enlightened presentation. Pastor Daniel Laird from the
Community Christian Church gave the morning message. His theme was “Invitation.”

Marion Mitchell introduced Pamela Gardner the new Pastor at Wesley Methodist Church. Pastor
Pam shared her pleasure in serving Wesley Church and the Community.
The highlight of the gathering is standing, joining hands around our tables as Marion Mitchell leads
us in prayer, what a special bond with Jesus and others.
All the seniors were served a hearty lunch. Barbecued Ham Sandwich, Veggie Salad, Deviled
Eggs, Mixed Fruit, and challenged to make our own ice cream Sundaes. WOW!!! A special
thanks to Judy Faulhaber and her faithful helpers. Don’t forget to sign up or call Marion Mitchell
if you wish to attend the bus trip to Drake’s Well and Train in October. Letters will be sent out
instead of phone calls to remind you of the September meeting.

COME TO KEENAGERS
Any retired person and their spouse are invited to attend the Keen-ager meetings. The group next meets on September 6th in Wesley Center at 10 a.m. The only cost is $3 for the luncheon. Wesley sponsored missionaries Gurudatt and Nadira Shiwdat will be speak-ing about their experiences in Surinam.
Keenagers meet monthly on the 1st Thursday and include a special speaker or entertainment, singing, a devotional by pastors and lay people in the Erie area and then a delicious lunch prepared by a team of volunteers. Membership includes people from Wesley and from the surrounding neighborhoods. If this will be your first time coming, call the church office at least three days prior to the lunch-

50 Everyday Faith Practices
Spiritual disciplines enliven the soul and become a gateway to grace upon grace! Try these 50
Everyday Faith Practices (some borrowed from the Baltimore-Washington Conference and
some created by Rev. Rebecca Innerst, Director of Discipleship and Christian Spiritual
Formation). Centering in God just for a few moments each day, giving God has our undivided
attention, will undoubtedly benefit our ability to not only listen to the Spirit, but live in the
Spirit each day.
1. Each morning, as you awake, lift this prayer, “thank you God, for life today!”
2. When you are reading the newspaper, pray over the headlines.
3. When you hear the news on television, lift a prayer.
4. As you listen to the radio on the way to work or leisure, lift needs in prayer.
5. In the busiest time of your day, stop and sit silently for 15 minutes.
6. Write a letter that shares your faith to someone who is in the periphery of you life.
7. Give to a complete stranger.
8. Laugh loudly so as to let your neighbor know.
9. Listen.
10. Offer grace, even in the midst of a busy restaurant.
11. Create an alter area in your house with meaningful symbols of your faith.
12. Be salt and light to someone in need.
13. Consider that as you move about your day, all ground is holy ground.
14. Display your favorite cross where it really can be seen.
15. Say, “I love you” to those who really need to hear these words.
16. Take a prayer walk.
17. Keep your promises to your children and grandchildren.
18. Breathe deeply.
19. Be kind to someone who really annoys you.
20. Say “thank you”.
21. Practice diversity.
22. Practice humility.
23. Practice random acts of kindness.
24. Visit someone who may be lonely or alone.
25. Pray.
26. Pray some more.
27. Read a book of the Bible you hardly noticed.
28. Be generous in giving your time.
29. Take the Sabbath seriously.
30. Keep the Sabbath holy each week.
31. Walk your talk and talk your walk.
32. Clean out a drawer and clear out physical and spiritual clutter.
33. Take a winter walk in the snow.
34. Listen closely to the laughter of children.
35. Thank God for the children’s laughter and voices.
36. Practice doing good.
37. Practice doing no harm.
38. Practice staying in love with God.
39. Practice journaling your thoughts each day.
40. Dance when you have the urge and do that joyfully.
41. Write down what you need to confess and then pray a prayer of confession.
42. Be still and know.
43. Start a new book of the Bible and stick with it.
44. Pray as though everything depended on God, work to be a reflection of that prayer.
45. Watch for the stranger you can serve.
46. Take time off from work to play.
47. Invite someone to worship.
48. Invite someone to pray with you.
49. Invite someone to a small group gathering.
50. Invite each of the above into your life, and this year you will enliven your soul.
