ROSIE’S RAMBLE

On Friday I saw the baby swans I mentioned earlier in the year. As the council worker there said – they are all grown up. The only sign that they are young is pale feathers on their chest. I have found another food that erupts. Sister Ramble has been up for a few days, so we got up to the usual mild mischief. There was a recipe printed on the mobile device for a chocolate mug cake cooked in the microwave , so we decided to try it. Did the first one in an ordinary large coffee cup as instructed. Thought it was a lot of mixture in the cup but put it in the mic anyway. Well - move over Mt Vesuvius! Just as well I put a saucer underneath to catch the overflow. We used a big soup mug for the second one and it still rose over the top. I reckon the recipe was for four puddings. By the way, they were delicious – and it only took 3 minutes to cook. We took a ute-load of stuff to the tip on Wednesday. What a surprise-instead of the old axle-busting track there is a three lane highway! There are culverts and everything. Thanks to the council. Thanks also to the gentlemen who helped us unload our stuff. Nice to see the shy, self-effacing Donald shoving other leaders out of the way so he could be in the front row of the photo. Sister and I went over to Avoca last week as she hadn’t had a look around there. Had a nice lunch and a good look around before we found the Chinese Park. What a lovely peaceful place it is. There are massive rocks placed around the area and a pond. A nice place to sit and think. Those footy commentators have been at it again. There was a certain amount of excitement about the first female AFL umpire at the match in Alice Springs. Then she had to bounce the ball!! QUOTE: - “I wonder if she can bounce the ball properly – YES she can”. Come on boys!!!

Susie Oh’s Story “I started Karate last August in Dunolly, then competed for the first time in November in the Ballarat Regional competition and won a Silver medal in the Development division. At the end of February this year, I won another Silver medal in the Melbourne Open in Werribee. A week after, I was in the Victorian State Championship where I won a Bronze medal and got invited to train with the State Team. At the end of March I competed in the Shotokan Cup in Box Hill where I won 2 Gold medals in the Development Division and 1 Bronze in the Elite (Black Belt) division. I had a Try Out for the State Team in early May & was successful. I believe my background and foundation in Chinese Kung Fu has helped me in Karate. I've been doing it since childhood in various styles and had competed at State, National & Oceania levels.” Susie will represent Victoria at the National Championships, which will be held in Sydney this August. “It was quite unexpected. I initially started to learn some self-defence and it all happened so quickly,” Susie said. It’s an amazing achievement for someone so new to the sport, one that isn’t lost on Susie’s coach, Kokoro Kai, head of style, Peter Jackson. “Susie is only on an Orange belt, so she’s very early on in her development,” Jackson said. “To put it in perspective, all the others on Susie’s team are black belts who have been doing this for years”, he said. While it’s a terrific achievement, the trip to Sydney isn’t a cheap one and Susie is in the midst of a fundraising drive to help her get to the championships. “It’s an incredibly expensive undertaking all up and we don’t get any government funding, so I’m relying on the generosity of people to get me there,” Susie said. Craft Shop News Don't forget that it is our 10th birthday and if you call in to see us on Wednesday the 7th of June between 10am and 4pm you can have a piece of birthday cake to help us celebrate. Without the support of the local community as well as all the handiwork made by our members, we would not have lasted for so long. So thank you all. Our members are reminded that their membership renewals are now due and are still $10 for the year. The memberships pay for the gas which keeps us warmer during the winter, so it is a vital part of our volunteer system and enables the shop to be open in the cold weather. The Golden Triangle Treasures Craft Shop is a not for profit initiative of the Dunolly and District Neighbourhood Centre. New members are always welcome.

Government Assistance for better end-of-life care

People near the end of their life will soon have better access to high quality and compassionate palliative care, closer to home. The State Member for Western Victoria, Jaala Pulford, said Maryborough District Health Service will receive $20,922 as part of the State Government’s $5 million equipment fund for palliative care, giving the health service the tools they need to support people and carers to provide care at home in their community. Ms Pulford said the funding will ensure people in the local area with terminal illness can spend their last days at home with their family, friends and loved ones. “Community palliative care agencies play an essential role in supporting people with terminal illness who wish to die at home, and in the last year they provided care and support to nearly 17,000 Victorians,” Ms Pulford said. “We are supporting people in the Maryborough district who have a terminal illness to be cared for, and die, in their place of choice,” she said. Minister for Health, Jill Hennessy, also announced the second round of the State Government’s Regional Health Infrastructure Fund which will be expanded to include publicly funded community palliative care services. The $200 million fund – the largest of its kind in Victorian

history – will rebuild rural and regional hospitals to ensure all Victorians can access the high quality care and facilities they need and require, no matter where they live. Grants can be used to build new or remodel existing facilities to provide greater comfort for patients and enable doctors and nurses to deliver safer and more efficient care. Health services can also apply to buy equipment, including furniture, fittings, and medical equipment, or upgrade essential infrastructure such as plant equipment, systems to reduce power and water usage and information and communication technology. “Every Victorian should be able to access compassionate end-of-life-care. “This fund will make a real difference for seriously ill patients and their families by improving palliative care they need,” Ms Hennessy said.

Happy Birthday Golden Triangle Treasures Craft Shop!

Our Craft Shop turns 10 this month! Vicky Frizzell, a member of our committee had the idea of opening a craft shop in Dunolly showcasing local people’s craft projects. All agreed to “see how it goes”. A shop was found, administration set up, local craft people encouraged to join and volunteer to work in the shop and off we go. Well, we think the shop has done brilliantly! Thanks mainly to Vicky in keeping everything running smoothly, keeping our volunteers on their toes and the stock of high quality and plenty of it. So to celebrate there is a Birthday Cake! So call in for your slice on Wednesday 7th June. (You better get there in the morning). Thank-you to all who volunteer their time and the very crafty people who do such fabulous work. You all deserve a slice of cake. And Happy Birthday!

Bealiba CWA Update At our May meeting we celebrated International Day with a Danish inspired lunch and then, in the afternoon, the Bealiba Primary School students displayed the dioramas they’d made representing some aspect of Denmark. These included a long ship, sword, hatchet and shield. The children also did an oral report and we were all impressed by the level of their research and the confident way they presented their material. Our guest speaker, Mrs Fran Nielson, kept the children (and us) entertained by detailing how the Danes traditionally celebrate Christmas – starting on Christmas Eve with a special meal and the dressing of the tree by the father of the house. Now that a date has been decided for the East Wimmera Group Craft Exhibition in March 2018, members will have a date in mind and will be working to complete their entries in time. On the other hand, some of us are 11

Local youth exhibition In a first for the Central Goldfields Art Gallery, the art work of Year 8 students from both shire high schools will be shown in a moving exhibition titled Through Our Eyes, opening Friday, 2 June 2017. The students have created biographical portraits of significant people in their lives, while showcasing their fresh and exciting artistic talent. Kay Parkin, Central Goldfields Shire Arts Manager explains, ‘This exhibition gives us a wonderful opportunity to participate with students in the Year 8 age bracket – a group of children we haven’t engaged with at the gallery previously. The teachers at both schools advise us that the artwork is looking big, bold and individual, so we are really looking forward to this exhibition.’ Art Gallery Curator Michael Grant states, ‘The students were given specific guidelines to extend their artistic skill in painting large scale portraits, which is not an easy skill to master. However, the students have exceeded our expectations with their portraits.’ The exhibition will be officially opened by Central Goldfields Shire Mayor, Councillor Geoff Lovett on Friday 2 June 2017 at 5.00pm. All are welcome to attend. CGSC Press Release

I am super impressed with the writing our students are producing at the moment and the way they have embraced elements from the VCOP writing program. This was the training the teachers completed at our last Curriculum day. See our Facebook page for the descriptions about WOW words. I love seeing students so engaged with their learning and rushing up to me to share their work.

A Great Sunday Afternoon A very pleasant afternoon of music was held at the Dunolly Golf Club on Sunday afternoon. With a fire to warm the feet and hands, the rain and wind outside was forgotten. Hot food and some alcoholic beverages kept everyone happy and ready to settle in and enjoy the fantastic musicians who came to entertain. The Groove Dudes, with Jan Stephenson, Sammi James and Steve Riley started the show and they were followed by some very talented guest artists. Steve Parry kept the children entertained and his daughter Eleanor wowed everyone with her beautiful voice and keyboard skills. There were also guest appearances by Rob King and Guy Lawson. Several of the audience braved the dance floor and a good time was had by all who attended. A big thank you to Jan Stephenson and Jan Brock for organising the afternoon and to the musicians who gave their time and talent. Many thanks also to Dunolly Bakery and Dunolly Quality Meats for donating the bread and meat.

The Murray PHN has advised Inglewood & Districts Health Service (IDHS) that they are extending the exit time for the Mental Health Support and Social Work from the end of June 2017 until the end of September

Small Business Bus brings advice to Dunolly

Small business operators in Dunolly and district will be able to access free mentoring, support and government business services when the Small Business Bus visits on Wednesday 7

th June.

The Member for Western Victoria, Jaala Pulford, said the Government doubled its mobile support for small business in 2015, with a second Small Business Bus delivering valuable advice to towns across Victoria for the past two years. Ms Pulford said the bus service provides advice from small business mentoring specialists skilled in marketing, finance, human resources and sales. These experts have extensive experience in operating small businesses and in senior business management roles. “The Small Business Bus is a great service for local businesses to have access to expert face-to-face advice anywhere in Victoria, Ms Pulford said. “This program plays an important part in Labor’s commitment to providing Victorians with greater access to government support services to encourage business and jobs growth across the state,” she said. In 2015-16 more than 1,500 small businesses accessed free on-board mentoring, while a further 6,200 received assistance from information officers. This year’s enhanced touring program will take more information and services to more towns across the state than ever before, benefiting businesses that may not have the time or resources to otherwise access the available support. The Small Business Bus will be outside the Halls Gap Visitor Information Centre on Tuesday 6

th June.

Later in the month, it will be outside the Rural Transaction Centre, 109 Broadway, Dunolly on Wednesday 7

th June from 10am to 4pm.

Free mentoring sessions on board the bus are limited and bookings are essential. For more information or to book a session, visit business.vic.gov.au/sbb or call Small Business Victoria on 132 215.

Jaala Pulford Media Release

2017. During this time Murray PHN will work closely with IDHS and other relevant stakeholders to complete a service and needs analysis within the IDHS catchment while providing support in the development of a transition plan. Primary Health Networks (PHNs) have been charged with improving regional health outcomes by funding services that demonstrate best practice, evidence-based models of care and reducing avoidable hospitalisations over time. The Loddon region has the highest rate of premature mortality in central Victoria, with avoidable deaths from heart and lung disease more than double the Victorian average. Avoidable deaths from diabetes are 2.5 times higher than the rest of Victoria and the median age at death in the Loddon is two years below the state average. In our region the top three health priorities are: Cardio Pulmonary Disease (COPD) (13,739 sufferers) Cardiovascular disease (CV) (8,303 sufferers) Diabetes (33,330 sufferers) To manage chronic diseases effectively, new models of care for patients need to be developed – to provide high- level, localised, integrated and coordinated primary care, delivered by multidisciplinary clinical teams in collaboration with the community. Unfortunately due to the changes to the PHN focus the Mental health support and Social Work services currently provided by IDHS will not be funded from the end of June 2017. Mental health is a high priority for both Inglewood and Districts Health Service and the Murray PHN. In the new financial year Murray PHN will be: approaching service providers to deliver a broader range of primary mental health treatment options across our region undertaking a redesign of accessible services for people living with severe mental illnesses supporting the recent release of an expression of interest for general practice for the new PHN Black Dog StepCare program implementing the Wedderburn’s GPs in Schools program, which will deal in part with mental illness in young people. Any queries re the services provided at IDHS should be directed to the Chief Executive Officer

Powercor responsible for low –flying helicopter

The mystery behind a helicopter spotted flying over the Central Goldfields Shire this week has been solved. Quashing a number of theories circulating online as to why the helicopter has been hovering around the Maryborough area, Powercor has confirmed it is using the chopper to inspect local power lines and the surrounding vegetation. “The helicopters are being used to inspect vegetation around our assets. In the event we identify any potential hazards we will photograph the issue so our work crews can respond to it on the ground.” a Powercor spokesman said. “From a reliability perspective, it helps ensure electricity supply to customers is maintained by avoiding the chance of branches or debris falling and hitting power lines. From a public safety perspective we want to absolutely reduce the risk of bushfire in our communities,” he said. “Powercor will have helicopters doing the same work across our network region right across to the South Australian border until the end of May 2017.”

A Night Out Imagine … the cool modern jazz is softly issuing from the sound system, the wood fire has the room at an ideal temperature, an extensive wine/drinks list is handed to you; then the extensive menu which lists a mouth-watering array of innovative dishes. Sounds like the last time you had a special function in a major city? Wrong! Dunolly, on a cold, wet Saturday evening recently! Yes it was a special night, but no-one but us knew that. The dishes were beautifully prepared and presented by the friendly staff. A memorable evening, without breaking the bank. I’m talking about Kelly, Karen and Peter at Dunolly Produce Store. Unfortunately the name does not convey the current activity of the business. The word Bistro in the title would help. Thanks everyone for a great meal.

Rug up and explore your back yard! That’s the invitation from Loddon Shire this winter as the region’s businesses and tourist attractions greet the chilly months with their usual distinctive offerings. Alternatively, the area’s natural assets provide opportunities for bracing walks, bike rides, fishing and boating trips. It’s easy to escape the cold, browsing in the renowned antiques and collectibles stores at Inglewood, the Coach House Gallery and Museum at Wedderburn, or one of the jam-packed historical societies’ headquarters sprinkled around the Shire. The Blue Eucy Museum at Inglewood presents an opportunity to discover the unique history of eucalyptus oil production in the area, while the town’s blue plaque walk reveals stories of its earliest days and the characters who made their mark during the days of the boisterous gold rush era. The area around Boort is home to farm-gate producer Simply Tomatoes and offshoot enterprise Aussie Wool Quilts, while John Piccoli’s famed spanner sculptures at Barraport and Boort’s award-winning olive oil business, Salute Oliva, welcome visitors. When the weather’s clear, buy supplies from one of the district’s popular butchers to enjoy a barbecue at Kooyoora State Park or Terrick Terrick National Park – or, plan a picnic by visiting Bridgewater Bakehouse, nearby Water Wheel Vineyards or local stores and cafes. For those keen for some brisk exercise, the Shire has a network of signposted walking and cycling trails, while amateur prospectors can fossick for gold at numerous spots around the area. People not wishing to drive can catch a V/Line train to Pyramid Hill and walk in the steps of explorer Major Mitchell as they tramp the town’s famous hill. You can motor through the south of the Shire and stop in the gold rush-era village of Tarnagulla and the appealing Newbridge, Laanecoorie and Eddington. For further information telephone the Loddon Visitor Information Centre on (03) 5494 3489 or visit www.loddon.vic.gov.au.

Loddon Shire Press Release

Mouse Murderer For months now those little scampering sounds in the roof have been hovering around the edge of my consciousness. It is in the evenings when the TV is off and the dog is slumbering in her chair while I read or play computer games that the scampering is the most noticeable. They have been hard to ignore but I have done my best, and a pretty good best too as it was back in the summer that they first became audible. However things came to a head last week when Telstra technicians came to repair the phone line. In an effort to find the outside plug I had to remove a panel which had been in place since an extension was put on seventeen years ago. The amount of mouse excreta behind the panel was truly shocking. To my relief there was time to quickly clear it up before the technicians came in with their tools. While they were working one called out to me that a mouse had just run up the pipes in the wall. Obviously this was a major mouse expressway which had been created by the extension all those years ago. After the technicians had finished I stuffed all visible gaps with steel wool and put some bait into the wall cavity before screwing the panel back on very firmly. To complete the job I put a block bait in the ceiling as well. Later that night there was an amazing amount of thudding coming from the ceiling. It appeared that the block was moved at least three metres from where it was first placed as opposing teams of mice took it first one way then another. After about four hours of intermittent struggle it all went quiet. I know you cannot let mice infest your ceiling as they will eventually eat everything including your wiring, but I still lie in bed feeling guilty. Those poor little mice had fought so long and valiantly over fatal food. Hopefully no more will find their way through the mouse expressway and force me to become a mouse murderer - again.

Loddon Shire Canoe trail showcases Loddon’s

natural beauty Canoe paddlers will now be able to take in even more of Loddon’s natural beauty with the launch of the Serpentine Creek Canoe Trail at Durham Ox this Saturday. Mayor Neil Beattie, who will officially launch the new canoe trail, said the trail had been designed to be a self-guided paddling experience, suitable for most ages and abilities. “The trail follows a very slow-flowing and often still section of the Serpentine Creek for five kilometres,” Cr Beattie said. “Floating markers along the trail provide points of interest for paddlers, including The Inn, which was built in 1848, scarred trees, ring trees and feeding platforms for platypus and the rakali. “This canoe trail further highlights the ecological attractions of the Durham Ox area and certainly adds to our region’s environmental tourism,” Cr Beattie added. The Serpentine Creek Canoe Trail is one of four planned canoe trails in the Loddon Shire, with other trails to follow at Serpentine, Bridgewater and Laanecoorie. Trail maps for the Serpentine Creek Canoe Trail can be downloaded from Council’s website at www.loddon.vic.gov.au or using the QR code on the canoe trail signage at the beginning of the trail. The canoe trails development is a partnership between Loddon Shire Council, the State Government, La Trobe University Bendigo and Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation.

in the match against Maldon. This will be a very big day for the club,” Dunolly Football Netball Club secretary Marion Da Costa says. “We’re very excited to welcome Daniel to the club.” The senior coach approached Kerr’s management and inquired about his availability to play and generate positive interest for the Club. The stars aligned and Dunolly will benefit for having him part of the team against the Bombers. “We are working hard to generate a positive culture around the club and we feel that Daniel’s appearance will bring more people through the gates and see all the hard work that is going towards making the Eagles a strong club in the MCDFNL” Da Costa says. “It’s great to see Dunolly thinking outside the square to raise funds,” MCDFNL Operations Manager Shane Anwyl says. “We wish them all the best.” Dunolly will host its Sponsor’s Day to coincide with this fixture. There will be a special marquee for the sponsors. Community members are encouraged to support their football and netball club.

Winter In Dunolly After a glorious Autumn filled with sunny mild days, Winter has snuck up on us at last. It is the time of year when Swallows and Grey Nomads head for Queensland. This is just a taste of what they miss back home in Central Victoria. This morning’s frost was just a taste of things to come. We would love to see some more winter images so please share the beauty of the season with us and send us some photos.
