The Regional Railway operator, Rift Valley Railways has recorded
a 3 percent increase in freight business for its Kenya and Uganda operations in the first quarter of Financial Year 2011/2012 compared to the same period in the previous financial year; an 8 percentage increase from the tonnage moved in 4th quarter of 2010/2011.RVR moved a total of 425,888 tons between July and September 2011/2012, up from the 413,065 tons in the same quarter of the last financial year.However, between April and June 2011, the operator moved a total of 394,375 tons.An increase of 5 percent in net-ton kilometers (the tonnage multiplied by the number of kilometers operated by the trains) was recorded from 303,336,000 in the 1st quarter 2010/11 to 317,304,000 in the 1st quarter of the current financial year.This was 4 percent improvement from the net-ton kilometers recorded in the 4th quarter of financial year 2010/2011.RVR Group CEO, Brown Ondego confirmed the performance, pointing out that the RVR had maintained a positive operation outlook
using internally generated revenues. He added that the company had the potential of exceeding current trends once the financiers completed the lending process.“We are confident in our business strategy and we believe that once we receive and start investing the capital expenditure, as per our five year plan, we will be able to enhance our efficiency. This will result to notable improvements in our operations.”He said with respect to Passenger Business, the first quarter 2011/2012 recorded a drop in performance as the number of passengers conveyed during the quarter decreased by 14 percent to record 1,367,694 passengers against 1,579,441 in same quarter of the 2010/2011 financial year. This has mainly been attributed to inflation and its multiplier effect on consumers.“The operating environment of the company in the period under review shows relative stability. However, on a quarter to quarter comparison, the infaltion rate shot up in September to a high of 17.32 per cent up from 3.21 per cent record in September 2010, a 500 percent increase, ” Brown
said.He also noted that the manufacturing sector had witnessed decreased demand since high prices had eroded the purchasing power of consumers. “With Kenya being a heavy reliant of fuel, imported goods – ranging from machinery to processed food – a weak shilling means that the imports are becoming more expensive which translate to high retail prices,” He added.The passenger kilometers however increased by 48 percent compared to the same quarter 2010/2011
to record 81,680,494 passenger kilometers up from 54,775,345 following the increase in average trains per day from 4.0 to 4.3.Freight business constitutes 93 percent of RVR’s business. The percentage ratio of the remaining 7 percent shared by passenger business at 1:6 for the mainline and Commuter services respectively. Passenger service is currently only available in Kenya.

Every human being would wish to have a good eyesight.
However, this comes with some discipline and a few challenges too that one
should get rid of. Some of the things one should observe are discussed below.1.NUTRITIONGood eyesight requires
good eating habits. Studies have shown that nutrients such as Omega-3 fatty acids, Lutein, Zinc, vitamins C and E can help one to avoid age-related vision problems like cataracts and macular degeneration. Green vegetables, oily fish, eggs, nuts, non-meat protein sources and fruits are among the foods experts advise people to take to protect their eyes. Also, a balanced diet is key to key to lowering risk of type 2 diabetes, which is said to cause blindness in adults, with about 45% of people with diabetes being victims of the same.2. PUT ON SUN GLASSESSun glasses are good for two reasons:First, they improve on your looks; everyone wants to look attractive and this is exactly what sun glasses are here to do. Secondly, they will help in protecting your eyes from the sun’s direct U.V (Ultra-violet) rays. Too much exposure to these rays increases risk of
being affected by macular degeneration and cataracts.
3.GET RID OF THAT HABITSome habits like smoking are dangerous not only to health in general, but has also been linked to an increased risk of cataracts, optic nerve damage and macular degeneration too. For this reason, smokers are advised to quit the habit if they want to reduce the risk of poor eyesight due to too much intake of tobacco.
4. USE OF SAFETY EYEWEARWherever you are, whether at home, at work or outdoors, one is advised to put on safety eyewear to protect eyes from injury, vision loss or blindness. Certain kinds of work especially in factories or some sports are very risky hence the need to put on protective gear, which also includes safety eyewear.
5.RELAXING THE EYESJust like any other part
of the body, eyes need to relax to avoid exhaustion. Experts therefore advise that one should look 20 feet away from the computer for 20 seconds in at least every 20 minutes one is working on a computer. It is also advisable to position yourself in a way that your eyes are on the same level with the top of the monitor. 6. VISIT YOUR EYE SPECIALIST REGULARLY
Regardless of age everyone needs to consult an eye specialist regularly to check on their condition. This is because many people fail to realize they have eye problems, some of which could probably be well handled if detected early, but failure to visit an eye specialist doesn’t help as well. So this is undoubtedly key to good eyesight.
