    The Meg-Carly Complex

For the first time since the EqualRights Amendment era (theERA era), the Republican Partyis filled with women. No, thesewomen arent Phyllis Schlafly; inCalifornia, their Meg Whitman

and Carly Fiorina theRepublican nominees for thetwo highest statewide offices.

Since June 8 when the twodominated over theirRepublican counterparts, theyhave continued to avoid eachother and have already had onemedia gaffe related to their not-so-team like campaign styles.

But the real issue regarding thetwo women is: why didCalifornians think that theywould campaign together? Thegeneral consensus is that theywere both women, a first for theCalifornia Republican Party(CRP). Yet, we didnt see ArnoldSchwarzenegger and Senatenominee Bill Jones campaignmuch together in 2004.

So, why is it so intriguing thatthe two have avoided this strata?Because its being shoved downtheir throats. Lets start off withthe first problem: Palin. The riseof Sarah Palins popularityamong Republican voters hasincreased her anointedcandidates probability of beingnominated (not elected). With

that, many of her anointments(not appointments) have beenwomen, and now the League ofWomen voters is filled withmembers of the right wing(more so than before).

The second problem: the RNC.Just yesterday, the Chairman of

the RNC Michael Steele wasfeatured in a blog post atFlashReport, in which he wentto great lengths to discuss howMeg and Carly are the twoRepublicans cut out for gettingthe job done and alleviatingCalifornias woes. While that

may be true, its not helping thetwo who cant get along.

The final problem: themselves. Two rich, former tech CEOs whohavent had enough with power.Naturally, when it comes to theoffice of Governor and Senator, the second most common fieldthat officeholders previouslyoccupied were in business

(second to law). Governor alsohas the ranks of two actors aswell, but thats just sidebar. Thisproblem is that they honestlycant get around the fact thatwhile they are competing indifferent corporationsjurisdictions, they cannot getover the fact that they are nearlythe same type of person: aformer CEO of a multi-million

dollar corporation who formerlyadvised John McCain on thecampaign trail.

While these three problemsplague the two Republicanheavyweights, the Meg-CarlyComplex needs to be solvedbecause, like it or not, its apossible winning strategy. Ifthey can deflect claims of buying

out the election by Jerry Brownand Barbara Boxer, they shouldbe able to take some votes awayfrom Democrats who haventseen benefits. For both, theyhave years of tape and dirtyhistory to uncover.

    MEG & CARLY

    Will they ever get along?

Theyve gone through quite a few

ad buys and tit for tat on Liberal-

ness. In the end, the two dominant

Republicans might have to bow to

media pressure and work togetherin order to thwart a classic

    Democratic opposition.

US Senate (Carly Fiorina vs.Barbara Boxer)

Its a long way to the top if youwant to rock and roll win aSenate seat. Carly Fiorina hashad a difficult time since hernomination over Tom Campbelland Chuck DeVore. FollowingJune 8, Fiorinas cash supply isvery very low as she holdsaround $680,000 in the bankcompared to Sen. BarbaraBoxers $9.7 million. On theright, is a picture from The

The California 19th (JeffDenham vs. LorraineGoodwin):

Good luck Goodwin. Thatshould be the yard signs (or lackthereof) provided by the DNCfor Dr. Goodwins campaignagainst GOP nominee JeffDenham. Following hernomination, the DNC and/or theDCCC hit the road and gave thehopeless Democrat no resourcesto win this Republicandominated district.

Currently, Jeff Denham is tryingto garner support in Washingtonwith party leaders to curry favorand cash for an explosiveNovember 2 election. ForDenham, he will need supportfrom the Fresno/Madera inorder to win.

    NATIONAL PROFILE:

Is Clinton the Liberal Palin?Take away the Dontcha knows and winks andAlaskan hockey mom jokes, this is serious. Over thefirst few years in the new White House

administration, two national figures have builtthemselves up based on reputation and experience. One has been in the spotlight (namely Fox News)since she resigned her governorship, the othertakes his successful administration to make a newera of Democratic politics better.

In jus a few short years, the American politicalsystem has become globalized, in which individualsare garnering power rather than parties, organizations or corporations. Our globalized

leaders today are Sarah Palin and Bill Clinton. While Palin operates under a veil of Tea Partyantics and under-the-table RNC dealings, she hasbeen able to curry favor over Conservative voters, anew brand of the Republican right. As I noted in anearlier post, 2010 marks the death of Republicanand the rise of the Conservative.

Shes had great luck with her recent picks formidterm elections, from Californias own CarlyFiorina to South Carolinas Nikki Haley. This only

goes to end the discussion regarding herresignation of governorship in Alaska. She has builta national presence by downplaying establishmentpolitics (the characteristic of party politics thatmade her famous) and using name recognition andideology as a winner for elections.

Following some of her big wins, another kingmakerhas climbed the ranks. Known as the First BlackPresident, or in World Cup terms, Fan in Chief, BillClinton has built himself quite a politicalcomeback. It all started when he and his formerVice President Al Gore had a reuniting moment, which took light away from the currentadministration, following the return of two CurrentTV reporters held captive in North Korea.

He has since begun working the campaign trail, something that a popular former officeholder hasdone (though most havent seen for quite a while).

Clintons major election victory in the 2010midterms was the saving of Blanche Lincoln in home state of Arkansas as she escape the graspunion-backed Bill Halter.

Recently, Clinton defied the Obama administra(or asPolitico put it, the former president is hiown man and own political force) and decided

back underdog Andrew Romanoff in the ColoraSenate primary against the Administrationshandpicked candidate and Governor-appointedincumbent Michael Bennet.

While Palin is viewed as a visionary for the partBill Clinton could be the driving force to create fighting in the Democratic Party. Ignoring theideological differences between the two, these dfacto party leaders are garnering enough clout(some predestined to them) to determine who w

head into battle for seats in the US Congress anvarious statehouses. For an unstructuredRepublican party, unifying the right is the numbone objective (and is being achieved). For theDemocratic party, the rise of an independent leis causing a break up of the establishment and ialready struggling agenda.
