ITEMS OF INTEREST

Regardless of what you think of him, these are words of wisdom....

*A message from Bill Gates*.

Subject: *What is the Corona/ Covid-19 Virus Really Teaching us?

It is reminding us that we are all connected and something that affects one person has an effect on another. It is reminding us that the false borders that we have put up have little value as this virus does not need a passport. It is reminding us, by oppressing us for a short time, of those in this world whose whole life is spent in oppression.

PLEASE!!! Do not leave books outside the Library door. The Library is closed!

NEWLY AVAILABLE: The last bed at Hilltop has been made available again. It you would be interested in the bed ... or a portion of the bed ....... please let me know and I will be happy to show it to you and/or answer any questions. Anne McCulley, ext. 7338 Slot 4006 [email protected]

ATTENTION COMPOSTERS: Many thanks to all who are using the compost bins! Your efforts have been so successful that the bins are now full. So, for the time being composting at the Greenhouse and at the Hilltop Garden will be suspended until further notice.

It will take a while for the material to sink down and make room for more compostable material. When there is enough room in the bins you will be notified that composting can resume. We are grateful for your participation. The compost committee.

PICKLE BALL PLAYERS: If you would like to work on learning or on improving your game, Norma Taylor will be conducting pickle ball drills on Tuesday afternoons at the tennis courts. Beginning players will be on court at 3:30 PM and more experienced players at 4:00 PM.

Due to social distancing protocols, there will be a maximum number of 8 players in each group. To sign up for these lessons or to ask questions, please contact Barbara Anderson at [email protected] or call x7364.

NEWS FROM THE COUNTRY STORE: First of all, we want to thank all of the residents who have posted such glowing reviews of the Country Store. We volunteers are doing our very best to continue to serve Collington during these difficult times.

One thing that might make your ordering a little easier is knowing that all of our dairy products, milk, orange juice, eggs etc. come into the dietary department on Thursdays. These items are stocked in the Store during the night and on Friday mornings we should have our full complement of products.

Something else to keep in mind is that we continue to order as needed as we always have but our distributor is also having trouble obtaining certain products i.e. soup, hand sanitizer, bleach, clorox wipes. Of course, the topic on everyone's mind is toilet paper. I can assure you that we have an adequate supply of individually wrapped toilet paper. We will, however, limit purchase to two rolls at a time.

Finally, we thank you for placing your orders by phone but we will not be able to add to your order when you come to pick it up. Doing this creates a backlog in the hallway and is something that we are trying to avoid. Anything that you have forgotten can be reordered the following evening. Also, due to the increasing

Once again, thank you all for your continued support. Joyce Koch

DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCEMENTS

FROM MARKETING: Covid-19 Information Line: In an effort to better communicate our Covid-19 precautionary measures, particularly with family members and loved ones off-campus, Collington has established an information line at # 800-951-5670. This resource will provide pertinent updates, similar to the communication residents are already receiving via Channel 972, email blasts, and The Courier. It is important to note that this number will provide recorded updates, but will not function as a “hotline,” i.e., with live team members fielding incoming inquiries and concerns. We welcome you to share this information line number with friends or family off-campus who are interested in the safety measures we are taking here at Collington. Be well!

Collington’s Covid-19 Information line # (800) 951-5670.

FROM CULINARY SERVICES: Meal Delivery will occur daily between 11am and 3 pm.

HORTICULTURIST UPDATE: Our Landscaper is presently off Campus until at least Tuesday April 7. We had already reduced crew size on campus for the safety of residents and the crew. We are presently re- evaluating our strategy for the total landscaping on campus. When the landscapers return to campus we are asking you to avoid contact with them and limit conversations to speaking with Raphael (6'+ social distance) or with Kyle. Thanks, Kyle

FROM ADMINISTRATION: If you have not previously provided a family member to be added to our “Family Distribution Listing”, please send their name and email to Karen Cheney at [email protected] CLOCK TOWER CHANGES: Effective Monday, April 6th, Vern Rious will be relocating from the Clock Tower to the Security area.

Vern will continue to process daily mail and packages.

12 Courier                                                                                                                                 April 6‐April 12,2020

She will provide a mail tub at the Clock Tower for you to place any mail that needs postage. She will periodically check the area, removing and processing mail.

For now, you will continue to receive your mail in your mailbox. HOWEVER, we ask that you refrain from daily checks to your mailbox. Perhaps you would be willing to come by only once a week, or twice a week? At the bare minimum we request every other day to limit the number of residents in the area at any given time.

With the assistance of Security and/or others, Vern will deliver packages to you. She will knock and leave your package at your door. Prior to delivery, she will first confirm you will be home.

MANAGER-ON-CALL: As of March 14th, the Manager-on-Call will now work from home on the weekends.

14 Courier                                                                                                                                 April 6‐April 12,2020

COVID-19. We are in this together including everyone we know and those that we don’t know and never will. Our bonds have never been clearer, our existence - health, safety and comfort - depends on everyone. We are indebted to our staff, our grocery clerks and delivery people, our health care workers, and all our frontline people who are putting their lives at risk daily. It is ironic that in this time of social distancing our interconnectedness has never been clearer. So what must we do for each other? Others are taking care of our basic needs - but we too have responsibilities along these lines. Our health depends on not just what our wonderful staff is accomplishing, but on us doing our utmost to keep our campus Covid-19 free. Social distancing, extra care when off campus and upon our return, extra hand washing, etc. You’ve heard it all. But what of our social health? Staff, your neighbors, and the RA are working at this too. Channel 972 has never been more informative or entertaining (many, many thanks to Karl Edler and John Lees), Natalie Groom, our Artist in Residence, is finding new ways to educate and entertain us, Marion Robbins continues her chair yoga without seeing her students live, Kim Rivers has stepped up as 972 emcee and Ebony leads exercises I can only dream of completing. There is still much more to come! The efforts of those with other talents are noticeable throughout our campus. Have you seen all the refurbished benches on our paths and walkways? Thanks to Ann Marie Rahn for leading this effort. And thanks to Susan Wolf for organizing all the seamstresses and tailors in our midst. We are hoping for 400 homemade masks for our Creighton Center team. Gardeners are getting their

hands dirty in the greenhouse and at our rototilled hilltop gardens. Thanks to Mike McCulley for leading that team. Humor is being expressed in so many creative ways even as we listen to news that show Covid-19 on the upswing. And what about our amazing staff? They have stepped up in so many ways to protect our entire community. Culinary is at the forefront (we all know how important our meals are) but don’t forget housekeeping, security and maintenance. I am hoping for many new learned procedures that will last beyond this crisis. And cheers to Vern, as our deliveries increase, her cheerfulness remains. Thanks to our administrative staff who are showing their incredible leadership skills and to Ann Gillespie and Megan Barbour for bringing us live updates 3 times a week as well as written guidance. Our campus is blooming and with warmer weather we can be outside more often to enjoy spring. Just keep 6 feet apart, wash your hands often and keep well. During this difficult period in world history lets keep our curve flat - a zero straight line as of now. Virtual hugs, Lois Brown, RA president

To keep residents and staff safe, our annual plant sale will be a virtual one beginning April 11. We will be providing an order form electronically that you can download, print, fill out and return to mail slot 4006 along with a check made out to the Residents Association. (We will have hard copy for those who do not use computers.) Because it is a multi-page form, please staple or paper clip everything together. Working in very small groups, we will fulfill the or-ders and deliver them. Thanks to a new supplier, new watering and fertilizing techniques, and the expertise of Kyle Olsen, the plants we will have available are nothing short of spectacular.

Those who need a hard copy of the order form, please call Mike McCulley at X7338.

Order forms, with checks, should be returned to mail slot 4006.

Thanks for being open to necessary changes. Any questions, please call at X7338
