SOCIAL SECURITY CALLS: If you receive a phone call from “Social

Security” please know that it is a scam. Do not provide any information to

the caller. Simply hang up. Recently a resident contacted the non-

emergency line for the police about these calls and they shared information

on a product “Magic Jack” would stop these unwanted calls. In checking

with our IT folks, Rob was not sure if this product was the best solution, but

in doing some research he did come across a product through Amazon –

CPR Call-Blocker for Landline Phones.

From The Sustainability Group- DO YOU CARE ABOUT THE

ENVIRONMENT? Turn off those cottage welcome lights! Such lights are

intended to welcome expected guests. Walkway LED lights adequately

light up cottage entrances. If welcome lights are turned on at all, they

should be on only when guests are expected and while they are visiting.

They should be turned off when guests have left and remain off at all other

times. Otherwise they are wasting electricity, needlessly costing Collington

and ultimately residents.

FROM THE LIBRARY: New books are arriving. The list is on the Archives Room window. Books may be reserved by filling out the form found on the checkout desk in the Library. Put your request in the Request Box on small table by the Library office door, located in the back corner of the Library. WANTED: Post-it note pads (we use a lot). RECYCLED MENUS: The only printer paper provided for the 2 printers in the Library are the dining room menus. When the yellow upright box is empty either you must bring your own paper or go without. We are pleased residents are saving trees but remember the recycled paper is there for everyone, not just you.

REMINDER: Please remember to bring your new Medicare card to all of

your doctor’s appointments. You may also call or email our new Medical

Records Coordinator, Hattie Montague if you would like for her to enter

your new Medicare number in Collington’s system.

may change due to product availability in the market and demand, if so

these changes will be listed on the chalk boards outside the Landing.

Sustainability update: We recently ran reporting comparing the disposable

paper product usage of the last 60 days (December 2019 through January

2020) versus the 60 days before we reduced our dependence on

disposable paper products (October 2019 through November 2019). The

result is a net savings of $6000 to the culinary department and hundreds of

pounds of paper waste not going to our local landfills. Every penny saved

will go towards improving our culinary programs and providing our

residents a better dining experience.

FROM HEALTH SERVICES:

The annual Health Center’s Skilled Nursing Facility mock survey occurred

on February 17th through the 19th. Three members of the Chiles Healthcare

Consulting team members were on site looking at policies, procedures,

process and quality improvement efforts to prepare us for our annual

Department of Health survey which typically occurs in the spring months.

Last year Collington received zero deficiencies at its annual survey in May

2019 and it was in great part to the hard work the team put in after the

mock survey. This years mock survey proved that process, systems and

quality measures put in place last year have continued into 2020. While

there are still areas of improvement, the survey team said that all Collington

team members should be proud of the remarkable changes that have

occurred in the Health Center. This included all departments- culinary,

facilities, EVS, security, nursing, social work, human resources, etc., etc.

Every single Collington employee plays a vital part in the review and it’s a

great way for everyone to prepare for the annual survey which we

anticipate to occur in late spring/ early summer but as it is an unannounced

survey it’s important for the Collington Health Center to be survey ready at

all times- not just for good survey results, but for quality experiences and

care for our residents and because it’s the right thing to do!

The Collington Foundation: History

Mission: To provide and inspire philanthropic support for Collington Life Care Community

Vision: To harness our generosity of spirit to nurture the goals and aspirations of all who live, work and serve in our community.

After Collington Episcopal Life Care Community was founded in1983, the Fellowship Fund was established (1984) through a gift by the Episcopal Diocese of Washington. Its purpose was to support and encourage diversity at Collington - particularly economic. A resident can apply for assistance through the finance office.

The Collington Board of Directors created the Collington Foundation in 1996 as a tax exempt 501(c)(3) philanthropic organization that would raise funds to support Collington's mission. Under IRS Sec/ 509(a)(3) Collington is a "Type l" supporting organization. The foundation was created to receive all gifts and disperse all scholarships and grants. The board of directors is legally and fiscally responsible for stewarding all the funds, with support by the Collington administration. In 2011, Collington joined Kendal, a system of not for profit senior living communities.

The Ramsey Scholarship fund was established in 2017 through a legacy gift from the Ramsey family. Scholarships are awarded to older employees to further their study in their field. There is a small arts and culture fund as well.

The CEO of Collington, Ann Gillespie, serves as President of the foundation. The President manages the operational activities. The Chair of the Board, currently a resident, leads the board. The board consists of eight resident members and three community members. Two of these members represent the Collington board of directors on the foundation board. All board members are approved by the Collington board of directors. The board meets quarterly, October, January, April, and July.

There are four standing committees on the board –

• a finance committee to review the budget and financial results.

• an awards committee to set policy and review all scholarships and grants.

• a development committee to support the director of philanthropy in communication, cultivation of donors and fundraising initiatives.

• an executive committee, to consist of board officers and other members as needed in decision-making.

The foundation is supporting Collington’s mission (to improve the lives of its residents and staff) as it completes its long-range plans and in making ongoing projects possible and future capital improvements.

If you have further questions, please contact Nadine Hathaway, chair of the board of directors, ext. 5148.
