Outreach Committee: Earlier this week members of the Collington Outreach Committee delivered a very large load of donations our residents have so generously given. Your kind gifts of food and toiletries go to help the many people in our area who live in financially strapped circumstances. The ongoing needs for basic food staples continue as does that for unused toiletries such as shampoo, deodorant, and body lotions. The Bowie Food Pantry accepts food donations that have not passed sell-by dates. Again, the Outreach Committee thanks you for responding to the needs of our neighbors. If you have questions, please contact Nadine Hathaway or Gretta Estey. OUTREACH COMMITTEE The Outreach Committee is collecting supplies for teachers to use at Cora Rice and Kettering Elementary Schools. These would be excess items that you might be trying to find a good home for and teachers could use for the remainder of the year. Please do not buy anything - save your $s for the children's collection in the Spring! We are hoping to gather: Pencils and Pens, Colored markers, Crayons and Highlighters
Empty Binders, Portable File Holders and Files
Paper clips and Binder clips, Staplers and staples, Scotch tape Paper pads, notebooks, loose leaf paper, construction paper, post-it notes, and composition books
Pencil sharpeners - electric and manual
13 Courier February 3‐9, 2020
If in doubt, please donate and we will find an appropriate home. There will be a labeled box/bin in the hallway opposite the Library, and next to Food Pantry containers, for your generous donations. Thanks in advance for your help.

UPCOMING TRIPS! SAVE THE DATES!
The Trip Committee partnered with the Black History Month Committee to select the trips for February.
In scheduling these two trips, we also worked with Collington’s Transportation team to coordinate available dates for using the Collington bus.
In order to make this happen, we are testing an option for this month. We will skip the grocery run on Tuesday, February 11 and February 25 to the Shoppers grocery store. Why did we pick this option? The Transportation team reports only one resident typically signs up, and on some Tuesdays, no one goes at all.
Therefore, if you were going to go to Shoppers on either of these two dates, please pick another grocery store run on one of the other dates.
The van will be used for any doctor’s appointments and the Security vehicle will be used for the Metro runs.
If you have questions or need clarification on the above, feel free to contact Karen Cheney, 5023 or [email protected]

Extraordinary LIVING: The Art of Arnold Hurley
History is not simply an idea that is considered. It is visualized. It is the experience of seeing the heroes you learn about, their acts of courage, and the people they lived around in order to understand the values they embody.
17 Courier February 3‐9, 2020
Arnold Hurley represents the embodiment of that idea and we are excited to showcase his work on the living history that Black America incapsulates. Having lived in Maryland for 33 years, Arnold Hurely has done artwork since childhood and uses his artwork to inspire others around the world in seeing the extraordinary in seemingly ordinary moments. Arnold has noted repeatedly that is impossible to appreciate the significance of his art without seeing the significance of his story in developing it.

The team is looking forward to hosting another group of visitors for our annual, “What I Love About Collington” on February 14th!
A couple of weeks ago, the Marketing team enjoyed and benefited from an offsite retreat at the Village of Collington clubhouse! We are fortunate to have such hospitable and welcoming neighbors up on the hill. Although we may not have hot summer in our mind when it’s wintery, but we were reminded by our hosts of how much they enjoy utilizing their outdoor pool.
February 6th ,3-4pm
Meet and Greet! Come up to the landing, “Green Room” for an opportunity to meet Cherrie Eubank, Director of Nursing! After three weeks, she is becoming acclimated to the community and would love the opportunity to get to know you. Feel free to stop by any time during that hour.

FROM FITNESS- The treadmill is out of order. It is difficult to repair and management plans to replace it. This will take some time. Walking outside as an alternative exercise may not be attractive, depending on the weather. But walking in the long corridors, using the stationary bike, the elliptical machine or one of the NuSteps would also be good for cardiovascular wellbeing. Enjoy!
Health Services Update, Megan Barbour:
You may have heard a lot of talk recently about the Coronavirus. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the 2019 Novel Coronavirus is a virus identified as the cause of an outbreak of respiratory illness first detected in Wuhan, China. Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are common in many different species of animals. Rarely, animal coronaviruses can infect people. When person-to-person spread has occurred, it is through to have happened mainly via respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes, similar to how influenza spreads. While CC considers this a very serious public health threat, based on current information, the immediate health risk from 2019 Novel Coronavirus to the general American public is considered low at this time.
According to the CDC website, there is currently no vaccine to prevent the 2019 Novel Coronavirus. The best way to prevent infection is to avoid being exposed to this virus. However, CDC always recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses, including:
Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Stay home when you are sick.
21 Courier February 3‐9, 2020
Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
The CDC has the following information listed on its website as of January 30, 2020:
If you were in China in the last 14 days and feel sick with fever, cough, or difficulty breathing, you should:
Seek medical care right away. Before you go to a doctor’s office or emergency room, call ahead and tell them about your recent travel and your symptoms.
Avoid contact with others.
Not travel while sick.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing.
Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds to avoid spreading the virus to others. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
The CDC website has provided healthcare professionals with interim guidance for managing persons with known of suspected 2019 Novel Coronavirus. At this time, there has been no cases reported in the state of Maryland.
To learn more about this virus visit the CDC website at www.cdc.gov

Final Friday Notes From Ann Gillespie ---January 31, 2020
Note: this is the first of my “monthly notes” to the community; let me know if they’re helpful!
Aren’t these beautiful? I brought the vases of beauty to one spot in my office so I could snap a photo to include with my notes. The “little yellow” bouquet is from our Flower Committee; they often leave these sweet gifts on our desks!
__________________________________________________________________
I’m always happy to say goodbye to January; even when it’s been a mild and
mostly sunny one.
Here are some January highlights:
Recruitment has been a major focus this month as we continue to look for
“the right leaders for the right seats on our bus.” This is a high priority for
me and I’m encouraging our teams to take their time as they search to
ensure a good fit with both the role and our engaged culture. Megan
introduced our three new health services team members at last week’s
community meeting; I’m hopeful we’ll have two additional new hires to
announce in next week’s Courier!
The Master Planning Committee met last week to review the next set of
potential options for the campus that were refined as a result of the
feedback from residents attending the Gathering in December. Our next
Gathering is Wednesday February 5th; I’ll include an update on that event in
next week’s Courier. The goal for completion and approval of our master
plan is the April 23, 2020 Collington Board of Directors meeting.
I attended a two‐day orientation for new employees at Kendal’s corporate
offices in Kennett Square, PA (about a two‐hour drive). Great to learn more

about the resources available to us as a Kendal affiliate, from IT to HR to
master planning, their subject matter experts are at the ready to support
our work here at the community. I toured both Kendal at Longwood and
Crosslands. It brought back many memories for me as Longwood was the
first CCRC I visited almost 20 years ago and, working together with Kendal’s
founder, Lloyd Lewis and other leaders, spent many days developing the
Continuing Care Accreditation Commission. Both communities share a
similar feel to Collington…surrounded by beautiful woodlands and mostly
cottages on the campuses. If we have any “competition” for resident
involvement, it’s these two communities!
The Foundation Board met this past Tuesday and developed a transition
plan for the next few months as we start our search for a new Director of
Philanthropy. We’ve set a goal of having a new leader in place by early
June. Nadine Hathaway (Foundation Board Chair) will lead the group’s
efforts to continue building momentum around our outreach to residents
so that we can tell the wonderful story of how and why the foundation was
established and its vision and goals for the next two years. Watch for the
opportunity to learn more from foundation board members visiting the
District meetings over the next few months to share and listen to your
thoughts and ideas for them.

Why Should We Look Forward To Getting Older?

Psychologist Laura Carstensen says that as people get older, they usually
become less stressed and more content. I really liked it; a great reminder
(with science behind it) of the power of positivity!
I met Judy Brown as I was conceptualizing a leadership academy for leaders
in our field. A Quaker, Judy is a leadership educator, author, poet, speaker,
and coach whose work revolves around the themes of leadership, change,
dialogue and creativity. I’ll invite her in for a poetry reading; I think you’ll
enjoy her as much as I do!

Poem for January: Fire‐‐by Judy Brown
What makes a fire burn is space between the logs,
a breathing space. Too much of a good thing,
too many logs packed in too tight
can douse the flames almost as surely
as a pail of water would.
So building fires requires attention
to the spaces in between, as much as to the wood.
When we are able to build
open spaces
in the same way
we have learned
to pile on the logs,
then we can come to see how
it is fuel, and absence of the fuel
together, that make fire possible.
We only need to lay a log
lightly from time to time.
A fire
grows
simply because the space is there,
with openings
in which the flame
that knows just how it wants to burn
can find its way.
February here we come!

2700 - Reach Out and Touch Someone Recently I was speaking with someone about the internet outage and mentioned that Karen Cheney had updated the community on a blast voice message.
Huh? Well yes indeed, Karen and other managers can send group voice messages via our telephones to the entire community all at once. In order to receive these you must enter Collington’s voice message system, the one integrated into your landline. These types of messages and many others can be accessed by dialing 7200. Separate telephone answering systems, like those that come on wireless landlines, or other purchased phones will not record these messages. So my friend dialed 7200 and low and behold there were over 100 messages waiting, some for over 4 years. It took quite awhile to delete these as well! Each message must be deleted by pressing 3. As we lunched the next day with other friends, they in turn did not know about 7200. And guess what? They too had over 100 messages waiting for their response. So please don’t you get caught in an information vacuum. Be sure to dial 7200 especially when you hear a stutter dial tone. You have a message waiting, or maybe two! Be well, be happy, Lois Brown, RA President
TELEPHONE DIRECTORY SUPPLEMENT KEEP THIS PAGE! It has the latest new or corrected information that came in after the JULY 2019 edition of our Telephone Directory was printed, so that we can contact even our newest residents. This supplement is a cumulative list of changes since JULY 1, 2019. Each month, remove the old Supplement and attach this new one to your JULY 2019 Telephone Directory, until the next full Directory is issued.
PLEASE CHECK YOUR OWN INFORMATION, and send corrections or changes to [email protected], or call Charlotte Melichar at 7224 to add your change to the Supplement. Your corrections and changes will be included in the next Telephone Directory. All these phone numbers are in area code 301, except when otherwise shown. When dialing from one Collington phone to another, only the last four digits are required.
