The Weekiwachee Preserve was purchased by the Southwest Florida Water ManagementDistrict (SWFWMD) in 1996 for the purpose of preserving a wildlife habitat. Otherwise, this large tract of land would have been developed as a 6,000-home community with a golf course and shopping mall. The Preserve comprises about 6,000 acres of natural forests and 430acres of man- made lakes created by limerock mining. Within this area there are a wide variety of natural communities that provide a habitat for many rare and endangered species of plants and animals. Of special importance is the Florida black bear . SWFWMD has developed a 5-6 interpretive loop trail starting at the Shoal Line Blvd. entrance. A series of 14 signs were placed at appropriate stops along the trail to illustrate features such as the habitats of and many other species of birds, reptiles and mammals, black bear, gopher tortoise , bald eagle .
