The Wave Volume 16, Issue 6 November 17, 2017 Mrs. Ackley’s Message . . . HOLIDAY TOY DRIVE We are hosting our 3rd annual Kids 2 Kids Kapco Toy Drive again this year. I can’t believe that it is already time to start collecting for Christmas but we will kick off our toy drive on Monday, December 4th. I want to thank the North Lake Girls on the Run club for helping me organize and advertise this fundraiser! The drive will run through December 15th and Kapco’s sleigh will pick up our items here at school. Thank you in advance for serving others and reaching out to our larger com- munity. TEACHER WISH LISTS PBC has asked teachers to fill out wish lists for The Learning Shop in Brookfield. The following teachers have lists on file if families want to shop there for the holidays: Miss Restock, Mrs. Flannery, Mrs. Tarkow- ski, Mrs. Brittnacher, Mrs. Buchholz, and Mrs. Ruck. Thank you, Mrs. Bennett, for this great idea connecting teachers and parents! LOCKDOWN DRILL We conduct monthly fire drills here at school. We also practice lockdown drills to prepare for the unlikely event of an intruder. The North Lake School Staff was trained in the ALICE model and we updated our proce- dures relating to safety and security. As you know, we increased our cameras inside and outside of the build- ing to provide better coverage. Early next week 4K through 8th grade students will participate in an unan- nounced lockdown drill. Classroom teachers have prepared their learners for this drill and I would refer you to your child’s teacher if you have any questions about how this drill is experienced in each grade level. As always, I am available to discuss it with you as well. HOLIDAY PROGRAM & COMMUNITY EVENT Please join us on Friday, December 1st, for our K-4th grade holiday program at 5:00 p.m. Our program is a wonderful North Lake School tradition and we look forward to this heartwarming evening every year. Mrs. Barnes creates the content based on a story- book and this year’s theme is Three French Hens. Immediately following the program at 6:00 p.m., join us for the North Lake annual tree lighting at the North Lake Fire Department. We will be lighting the tree next to the War Bird helicopter. Get your picture with Santa and his reindeer, sing a carol or two, have a cup of cocoa and a cookie, help decorate the tree, or just mingle with others from the community! This event is for all ages, so join us to help spread some holiday cheer. BLOOD DRIVE Our December blood drive is on December 4th from 2:00-6:00 p.m. Students will receive wonderful red blankets this year for referring a donor. Thank you, Mrs. Mandick, for your support of this community event and getting the word out. Jenelle Blavat of the American Red Cross will be here at school on No- vember 28th to talk to the kids about the importance of donating blood and helping others. YEARBOOK CLUB Mrs. Savitskij is still looking for additional students to join the yearbook club meeting on Tuesdays from 2:35-3:30 p.m. Just like last year, parents are encouraged to submit photos through the Empire Photography North Lake yearbook drop box at: http://lpx.me/CK7C-KF4T-6NYM/. We are looking forward to the best yearbook ever with the work of our students! Thank you in advance for your sub- missions. HAPPY THANKSGIVING Have a fabulous holiday and break from school. As always, please do not hesitate to contact me or your child’s teacher for anything at all, especially as things begin to get more hectic with the holidays. We are here to serve you and your family. Take care!

Counseling Corner: Hello North Lake families! With Thanksgiving around the corner, we talk a lot about being thankful, but did you know the many benefits that gratitude brings to you?

• Opens the door to better relationships

• Improves physical health

• Increases happiness

• Improves sleep

• Fosters resiliency

• Improves self-esteem What if we all took some time to practice gratitude deliberately with our families all year long? I wonder what a difference it would make in the moods in our homes, our friendships, and our school! I also want to offer you a resource that came my way this week. It’s a fun way to have a conversation with your children about media use and screen time. This site will walk you through a discussion and process to come up with a technology agreement for your family. It looks like it would be good for all ages - give it a try! The Smart Talk (https://thesmarttalk.org/#/) As always, let me know if there is anything I can do to support your child! Jill Lesch, School Counselor [email protected]

A Note from Ms. Meister . . .

In and out of school technology is ubiquitous. At North Lake School we integrate technology across the curriculum into all our classes K-8. With the goal of continuous quality improvement and an attempt to stay current with the ever-changing world of technology in education, it is the

focus of our curriculum meetings this year. Mr. Chad Edstrand is leading teacher teams in up- dating our tech plan. Teachers will be infusing lessons about digital citizenship in their classrooms

beginning with a grade level Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) rewritten in kid language for better understanding. Take a minute to ask your children what they have learned about acceptable use

of technology at school. Your role as a parent or guardian and the partnership we build together between home and school is a pivotal one in helping your child/ren achieve success in school. We are grateful for your cooperation and support.

Whenever you have any questions, comments or concerns, I invite you to contact me. I’d be

happy to talk with you.

I wish all our North Lake families a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Looking for Volunteers!

Did you like Show and Tell when you were younger?

Do you want to help our students explore different careers?

We would love to have you help us in giving our students an opportunity to learn about the variety of careers that are available to them.

What would you need to do? • Spend the morning and/or afternoon with our students on February 1st • Plan a small group “show and tell” style presentation about your career

that would last for about 22 minutes

(We can help you with ideas if you need them!)

Are you interested or would you like more information? Please contact Mrs. Ackley or Mrs. Lesch with questions or to commit to this great day!
