AN INDEPENDENT PUBLIC SCHOOL From the Principal As this Semester draws to a close, it is that time of the year when the children are busy completing special projects and teachers are all very busy completing Semester 1 Reports. Each child will receive their Report at the end of the term which will provide parents with information in regard to their child’s effort in all eight learning areas, as well as their overall attitude, behaviour, effort and their personal and social learning. With the regular attendance of many children being lower this semester because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the breadth and depth of the curriculum covered throughout Semester 1 may have been reduced. For this reason, schools are not required to include A to E grades on this year’s Semester 1 student reports. It also means that your child’s attendance may not be reported, and any written comments may provide less information on their progress than usual. The children will all take home their Semester 1 Reports on Thursday, 2 July. I would suggest that all parents take some time to discuss the Reports with their child and determine ways in which they could improve their achievement even further next semester. From the Principal

As this Semester draws to a close, it is that time of the year when the children are busy completing special projects and teachers are all very busy completing Semester 1 Reports. The children will all take home their Semester 1 Reports on Thursday, 2 July. I would suggest that all parents take some time to discuss the Reports with their child and determine ways in which they could improve their achievement even further next semester.

In the early years of child development, we know that children learn and grow faster than at any other time in their lives. It is within the early years of a child’s development that sets the stage for later behaviour, learning, health and wellbeing. As a school, we build upon the skills and knowledge that our young children bring with

them to Kindergarten and Pre Primary and so prepare them for formal learning in the following years. Our Kindergarten and Pre Primary programmes form a vital part of our whole school approach to learning. Both Kindergarten and Pre Primary education provide the children with the opportunity to develop early literacy and numeracy skills and to build upon the knowledge and skills developed previously at home. As a school, we are very committed towards developing the children’s learning in the early years and it is wonderful to see the progress that they have made already this year. Our Early Childhood Programme contributes in a big way to our school and provides our little ones with such a wonderful foundation to learning.

This year, Mathematics continues to be an area for whole school focus with children in each year level expected to achieve the Western Australian Curriculum year level standard. It is essential that Mathematics be as rewarding as we can make it for the children and that they develop a positive attitude towards this learning area to ensure their own success. teacher. The Numeracy Standards provide a clear understanding as to what children are expected to achieve by the end of this year. Parents are encouraged to provide their children with the necessary support at home. The more support they have in Mathematics the better their progress will be.

The work of cleaners is always important in any school, however, during the COVID -19 period, it has been vital in ensuring a very high level of cleanliness within the school. Our cleaning team have played such a critical role in protecting the health and safety of our school community. This week, we celebrated International Cleaners’ Day and acknowledged the tremendous work that our cleaners do every day. Many of the children prepared notes, poems, drawings and cards for the cleaners and they were all very appreciative of their acknowledgement. Once again many thanks to our wonderful cleaning staff.

Whilst a number of school events have been cancelled this semester due to the Corona Virus restrictions, we have still managed to create some new events in which the children can participate. During the past few weeks, we have been conducting a lunchtime Faction Netball Championship for the children in Year 6. All faction teams have played several rounds and it has been impressive to see the growth in the children’s netball skills. The Grand Final will be conducted next week with the winning team playing the Staff Netball Team!! Additionally, we have also conducted a Year 5 Spelling Bee Competition during lunchtimes and have had an outstanding response from our Year 5 students. The Grand Final will be conducted next week and we are all looking forward to seeing who will be our Year 5 Spelling Bee Champion.

Learning mathematics creates opportunities for and enriches the lives of all Australians. The Western Australian Curriculum: Mathematics provides students with essential mathematical skills and knowledge in Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry,

and Statistics and Probability. It develops the numeracy capabilities that all students need in their personal, work and civic life, and provides the fundamentals on which mathematical specialties and professional applications of mathematics are built. At Wattle Grove Primary School, a dedicated Numeracy Block is embedded into each school day to provide opportunities for all students to develop and apply their mathematical knowledge and understanding. Alongside the content strands of the curriculum, students engage with mathematics by demonstrating their depth of knowledge through the proficiency strands of; Understanding, Fluency, Problem Solving and Reasoning. Wattle Grove Primary School is committed to providing our students with the skills and knowledge needed to understand the 'how' and 'why' of mathematics. For further information, and ways to support your child at home, visit https://www.education.wa.edu.au/resources-for-parents Numero Numero® Club will be up and running again each Friday during Term 3. Students in Yr 3-6 are invited to come along and sharpen their Numero® skills and learn some new tricks. Numero® is a great tool for improving the accuracy and speed of mathematical computation skills, along with developing strategic mathematical thinking.

As we come into a change of season and school uniform attire, all children must be in school uniform in accordance with the School Dress Code Policy. As a school, we all work very hard to ensure that our school uniform is maintained throughout each room of the school with the School Board awarding the School Uniform Award to the class with the best representation of the school’s uniform. Parents are asked to please ensure that only dark green and yellow school colours are worn. Dark green scarves, gloves and leggings (only with a skirt) may also be worn at school. No jewellery is to be worn other than a watch, earrings –sleepers or studs, and jewellery of religious or cultural significance. Hair must be neat and out of children’s eyes with hair below shoulder length tied up. No cosmetics are to be worn. The School Dress code:

Fosters and enhances the public image of the school

Financial support provided by parents has always played an important role in the provision of resources and the school’s capacity to add value to children’s learning experiences. For example, parent voluntary contributions assist schools to provide resources for all classes and can include items such as reading books, puzzles and blocks for the littles ones, maths equipment, paint and craft supplies, dictionaries, atlases, iPad, maths and sports equipment. Each year the School Board sets the contribution amount and for 2020 the schedule is:

Thank you to the many parents who have already paid their school contributions this year. It makes a significant difference and is greatly appreciated.
